For some of these songs, I see that the criteria is only patriotism and not whether the song is very good.

The entire Rocky IV soundtrack should count as one giant American montage.

But yeah, second on James Brown and Living in America.

Ray Charles's "America the Beautiful", James Brown's "Living in America" (even if I have to fight to keep Wierd Al outta my head), John Fogerty's "Fortunate Son", Randy Newman's "Sail Away" and "Rednecks" and a good brass ensemble doing justice to Sousa's "Stars & Stripes Forever" and "Liberty Bell March."

There's a good 4th of July playlist to kill a good half hour on your radio.

Every year, i go to a neighborhood fireworks display on the 3rd. while there, inevitably the hostess will get super hammered, and begin professing her love "for her husband, her lover, her best friend.....Tomm". Then she says, Play my music! Magically, "Let freedom Ring" By Martina McBride comes on. It happens at least 5 times during the day. We've all become so accustomed to it, that the crowd starts chanting for martina about halfway through

My Dad told me a story about how he was in a barbershop next to his Navy base when the Jimi Hendrix's version of Star Spangled Banner began to play over the tv (I think). The military guys were super pissed that the national anthem was being  played in this manner. Interesting how times change.

Song #3 has lyrics about a band and its stage crew gang-banging a groupie. Is there a better evocation anywhere of the flag and Mom's apple pie? I think not.

American Jesus

I don't need to be a global citizen
Because I'm blessed by nationality
I'm a member of a growing populace
We enforce our popularity

There are things that seem to pull us under
And there are things that drag us down
But there's a power and a vital presence
That's lurking all around

We've got the American Jesus
See him on the interstate
We've got the American Jesus
He helped build the president's estate

I feel sorry for the earth's population
'Cause so few live in the U.S.A.
At least the foreigners can copy our morality
They can visit but they cannot stay

Only precious few can garner the prosperity
It makes us walk with renewed confidence
We've got a place to go when we die
And the architect resides right here

We've got the American Jesus
Bolstering national faith
We've got the American Jesus
Overwhelming millions every day

He's the farmer's barren fields
(In God)
The force the army wields
(We trust)
The expression on the faces of the starving millions
(Because he's one of us)

The power of the man
(Breakdown)
He's the fuel that drives the Klan
(Cave in)
He's the motive and conscience of the murderer
(He can redeem your sin)

He's the preacher on T.V.
(Strong heart)
The false sincerity
(Clear mind)
The form letter that's written by the big computers
(And infinitely kind)

The nuclear bombs
(You lose)
The kids with no moms
(We win)
And I'm fearful that he's inside me
(He is our champion)

Yeah, we've got the American Jesus
See him on the interstate
(We've got the American Jesus)
We've got the American Jesus
Exercising his authority

We've got the American Jesus
Bolstering national faith
(We've got the American Jesus)
We've got the American Jesus
Overwhelming millions every day

(One nation under God)
(One nation under God)
(One nation under God)
(One nation under God)
(One nation under God)
(One nation under God)
(One nation under God)
(One nation under God)
(One nation under God)
(One nation under God)

Nothing the caricature of a cover band now calling itself Lynyrd Skynyrd does belongs on a "best of" anything.

X -- "Fourth of July" would make a suitable replacement.

Also David Byrne, "Independence Day."
