How much is "a staggering amount" in this case? Is this a standard measurement? Would this be news if it was a "not-quite-but-almost-staggering amount"?

It's at least 1 kilohiroshima worth of CP.

When I was a teen, my friend's dad was a cop and his team charged someone with possession of child porn for owning a Traci Lords VHS. A quote from him was that "he couldn't tell the difference" between her porn and legal porn.

So, my point is -it depends.

How much is that in Delawares?

Seems like if you're a pedo you'd be better off getting a job as the guy who has to watch ninety terabytes of kiddie porn for evidence.

TFA says "90 terra-bytes". I'm going to assume that means 90 earth-sized hard drives.

We get caught laundering money with 90 terabytes of child porn, we're not going to white-collar resort prison. No, no, no. We're going to federal POUND ME IN THE ASS prison.

Childporn is disgusting and should be prosecuted; however, I think some cop math is at play here.  Sure he may have had 90 Terabytes of storage, but how much was actually used?

90 terabytes? My sympathies to anyone involved in the the case who have to view any of that. That has to be one of the worst jobs, to have to view sexual child abuse in relation to a prosecution.

BKITU: Teambaylagoon: 90 terabytes  ???  Dudes been busy doing the filming.

We should seriously hire some of these kiddie porn dudes to do enterprise storage management.

Boss: The main storage unit is getting full all the time, and the backups are not working.

Freshly hired kiddie porn dude: You only have a 25TB SAN. I'll restripe the RAID during lunch and see if I can swap out some of the SATA drives for SAS. I had a small storage system like this right after my last stint in county.

2014-07-03 02:59:13 PM
To be fair, they recovered 90 tb of drive capacity to go through.  Dude could just have a lot of drives sitting around.   I have some 20+ tb of drives sitting around here at the moment.

90 tb of porn is... a lot of porn.

" Police said they have 90 terra-bytes of hard drive space to sort through, which can hold about 27 million photos. "

I like how it implies that it's 90TB of child porn. They're assuming that every picture is 3.5mb in that case.

I can't really believe that there's more than 1TB, 2 if we're really pushing it of CP pictures. 1TB is still 300k pictures by their 3.5mb metric. Sounds a bit unbelievable.

At any rate, 90TB of hard drive space sounds quite absurd unless you're hosting something. Even then.

For those arguing about the size, etc.

Uh...what amount is an acceptable amount?  I mean, do the videos you watch take up a gig each?  You all seem to be experts on this.

These people who have to watch this crap to prosecute are potential victims themselves.  You never know how watching all that kind of unimaginable crap could affect a father with a newborn girl, son or any age, really.

Knowing things happen and then seeing them for yourself really changes a person.

Um, what?

27 million pictures?  WTF?  Perhaps the staggering dimensions of this guy's trove o' kiddie porn will be a key element in his defense strategy.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury.  If my client is guilty of anything, it's being a hoarder.  Okay, perhaps it's something you find distasteful and sick, but hoarding is a treatable disease.  Don't sentence my client to a lifetime of pain and misery at the hands of people who would do him harm.  Send him to a treatment facility where his hoarding affliction can be treated and he can resume life as a decent member of society.  Besides, the size of his collection attests to his non-threat to society.  With 27 million pictures to view, he's not going to have time to do anything else."

One thing I learned when I was a PI the FBI does not go after people when they can not prove by visual that the subject is under age.

//Best divorce case I ever worked, the guy actually used Girls Gone Wild as a defense to the questionable age porn found on the computer, oh and there were admissions of cocaine use, threesomes with young women pick up at concerts, and explicit webcam sessions with complete strangers.  This was all discussed in open court.

Peter North's just lucky that nobody tried to make a name for them selves by prosecuting him for having sex with a minor. They had evidence on tape!

Years ago I read about a case in Playboy where a guy at a swap meet was selling old Traci Lords tapes. The thing is, he had signs about how these tapes had been banned. He couldn't plead ignorance, he was using it as a marketing point. It turned out to be a very bad idea.
