Great book. Damn tough guy.

If the hero tag was ever deserved, he certainly is near the top of that list.  Great book, incredible story, we were lucky to have him alive as long as he was.  Any ONE of the chapters in the book is more than most people do in their entire lives.

The world is certainly a lesser place today.

Just finished that book last month.

Great story, amazing he lived so long considering the years of abuse he lived through.

/"So, you're the one with the strong finish?"
//He had no idea.

RIP tough man.  Hope they get the movie made.

This quote was made when Teddy Roosevelt passed, but it's definately fitting for Louis Zamperini

"Death had to take him in his sleep, for if he was awake there'd have been a fight "

The book is an entire line of "And then it gets worse"

I have that book and probably ought to get around to reading it.

At least he outlived that piece of shiat nipponese Watanabe.

Rest well, you tough bastard. You outlived Watanabe by a large margin and now you can have that meeting with him if you'd like.

How fitting that on the main FARK page, there's an article about a guy with a big dick followed by this one about a guy with gigantic brass balls.

Couldn't even make it one hundred? what a weakling!

/kidding, respect Mr. Z.

loki see loki do: At least he outlived that piece of shiat nipponese Watanabe.

The poetic justice is that he died a public coward because he was afraid to meet Zamperini again in 1998. Louis Z could have had the last laugh if he wanted it, but he was above that and better than that. A remarkable man from start to finish.

Rest In Peace Soldier.

*SALUTES*

/I read his book a few years ago.  Between stealing the Nazi flag at the '36 games, and the veritable hell he went through in WWII, this man earned my respect.

That's what they mean by 'they don't make 'em like they used to'.

The NSA could add nuance to this hero's story if they'd do a database run and release anonymized related emails and communication. It's only our tax dollars, after all. RIP, hero.

conniemac: This is what a real HERO looks like. I highly recommend reading the book.

Which is why I get tired of the way the word is thrown around so casually these days. It should be reserved for the truly exceptional, such as Mr. Zamperini.

Ha!  I thought the same thing.

Later in life he was saved by Jesus, isn't Fark supposed to hate him?

/RIP tough guy.

Just read the book a couple months ago. How someone lived through the ordeal he suffered, I can't understand.

Well, he actually chose to follow the instructions of Jesus to love and forgive rather than hate so Farkers are giving him a pass.

Just started the book this week....outstanding so far.

Rest in Peace! You truly earned it!

Semprini?

They talked about him a bit on the evening news. A couple years ago they did an interview with Zamperini, in which he modestly declined the hero status as compared to those who lost limbs or had been put in wheelchairs. They also said he stopped skateboarding at age 80.

Somehow a former student of mine knew him and stayed with him when he first moved to the LA area. He was an amazing man, and quite a character from what my student said!

RIP, Louis!
