(FIFA)   The quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup begin today. Can a sluggish German side regain their early tempo against the French at noon? Will Brazil go home early with the help of Colombia's young superstar at 4?   (fifa.com) divider line 884

Germany vs France (538 prediction, 52% for Germany) - 12 ET

Let's first look at how these squads got here.

Germany came in early and full of energy, crushing the Portuguese 4-0 in their opening match (and best of all, making Ronaldo cry.) Things slowed down from there, with Klose having to salvage a draw against the Ghanians, and then a rather boring squad with a win against the USA 1-0. In the R16, Germany looked beatable against Algeria, showing heavy weakness and relying on Neuer to act as a sweeper-keeper to keep the Germans from going behind, ending with a 2-1 victory in extra time.

The French began as a powerhouse as well, beating Honduras 3-0, 5-2 against Switzerland, before winning their group with a nil-nil draw to Ecuador. France didn't take quite as long to find their rhythm against Nigeria in the R16, but still waited almost til the 80th minute before scoring, ending in a 2-0 win.

If the same Germans that have been playing lately show up, the French have it. I don't feel confident about a German win here. If the Germans that played Portugal show up, the Germans should own this match. France is strong, but they are lacking Franck Ribery who knows Neuer's tricks well. Germany should start Klose, and allow him to cause constant pressure in the box and HOPEFULLY get one more goal to give him the all time record before he retires at the end of this competition. Then they should switch to someone around the 60th with fresh legs to pressure the tired Frenchmen even more. Oezil? RAUS.

Brazil vs Colombia (72% Brazil, though they have been giving waaay too much weight towards homefield advantage, it's much closer than they make it seem)

Let's look at how they got here.

Brazil opened the match against Croatia and needed to flop to get a penalty to even up the game after giving up an early O.G, ending with a 3-1 win, but instantly lost the faith of all the neutrals out there. The Godkeeper of Mexico was able to then hold them to a 0-0 draw, before they easily beat Cameroon (in what we now see was likely a fixed match anyway) 4-1. Brazil needed to go to penalties against Chile to stay alive for the next round, and overall looked very beatable.

Colombia were the leaders of the Group of Ease, beating Greece 3-0, Ivory Coast 2-1, and Japan 4-1, followed by a win over the (understandably weakened by loss of their beisst player, Luis Suarez, 2-0. The lack of Suarez shouldn't take away too much from Colombia, as they probably would have won it anyway, especially thanks to one of the stars of this Cup, James Rodriguez.

I think Colombia is going to pull an upset here, this is the team that's going to show how poor the Brazilians have been performing. Though who knows what refs are in whose pockets and it might come down to a controversial call for Brazil.....

Yes, I'm still here. I'll watch through the threads.

France has a chance, but it depends which Germany shows up (the powerhouse against Portugal or the squeaker against Algeria).

Brazil may get by if FIFA wants to see the home crowd sports-entertained.

The first match doesn't even kick off for another 25 hours and this mofo has been greened already? Sounds like one of the modmins doesn't even have a hard-on for soccer, they've shot their wad already. I hope whoever greened this gets plenty of fluids until match time. And if that football boner lasts more than 5 hours, consult a physician.

He actually reported it, which is when I saw it (I wasn't on queue duty this morning), and was asking for it to be pulled. I figured "f*ck it" and greened it for tomorrow. It won't hurt anybody to sit in Upcoming a while, and will let people who wanna talk about the games get a head start.

No harm, no foul--what? A yellow card? FOR THAT?! Screw you, ref!

German team may have cold/flu. France could take that game... and that not good for Brazil... they have some sort of "curse" when they play France.
But maybe the Brazilians will lose to Colombia instead. I have a feeling that upset is happening.

For all the France-Germany World War lulz, France vs. Algeria would have been a much more interesting match, sociopolitically.

Re: German Flu, It sounds more like a head cold. Some minor chills mentioned, but they're all training at the moment, so I can't imagine it's as devastating as the media is making it out to be and J.L even said that it's not a big deal.

Trying to find a lineup, so far all I know are that Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Schweinsteiger, Kroos und Müller  are in the starting 11, so that's a good sign at least.

I'll let you know if I find a full lineup.

ariseatex: Meanwhile in Belo Horizonte :(

The construction firms basically didn't give a shiat. They milked and milked for money knowing that eventually the organizers would have to either pony up or not have a stadium and look stupid in front of the world, then only started getting to work at the very last moment when they realized that actually not delivering a stadium would end in legal badtimes for them. So they handed over the equivalent of that Simpsons episode with the mob-built 'wheelchair ramp' made of popsicle sticks.

I've got both matches at 2-3 for Germany and Colombia today. Not that it matters, I'm too far behind to ever be in the running for the predictions, but it's still fun :P

If a strong Germany comes out, they've got this, if not, oh well they did it to themselves. It's still a bit too early for them to collapse, that's supposed to be the next match.

Colombia I'm thinking will pull off an upset. Brazil hasn't been as great as they've been portrayed and I think Colombia is the team to show the world that.

I was told Americans don't watch soccer when the US team is out of it. Why are there so many in this thread?

2014-07-04 11:19:17 AM
Given that Lahm is on the wing, Klose is in, Götze and Özil aren't both playing and the Löw took the slowest defender (Mertesacker) off to make room for Lahm, I've hesitantly switched from 3:1 for France to 3:2 for Germany...

/unless it goes to extra time, then Germany is screwed with Klose, Khedira and Schweinsteiger starting

2014-07-04 11:20:54 AM
My prediction: France thinks they have this taken care of thanks to a strong, expensive, impenetrable, yet immobile defense up the middle. The Germans will see this and simply go around it, winning the game very quickly. A few of the French will provide some small amount of resistance even though the rest of the team will have long since recognized the defeat and given up, perhaps even going so far as to collaborate with the Germans.

History repeats itself, France, but this time nobody is coming to save you.
