Every time I see one of those Calvin praying stickers I think 'I guess Jesus is OK with copyright infringement.'

I have seen to many of those in my lifetime.

That was actually interesting.  Especially the part about how Watterson didn't want to merchandise the characters, so once he stopped publishing the cartoon, there was essentially no one willing to fight for copyright infringement.

So it got marketed anyway, in a way that we all agree is at least mildly vulgar, and Watterson didn't see a dime of it.

I would change every mention of Jesus to "Kahless the Unforgettable", who turned water into blood wine and slew Ju'Das with his holy bat'leth.

I had to go before a judge when I was a teenager (not going into it), and the guy before me wore a shirt that said "Buck the system!" With a picture of a deer on it.

Amazingly, he was found guilty...

Peeing Calvin is something the character most likely did off-strip, so the praying one is probably more offensive to Watterson's vision. That was one non-religious kid.

What if it's Calvin peeing on a person drawing a picture of Calvin peeing on something?

But yeah, this is why I wish Bil had at least done some small merchandising, just so he could have more artistic control.

1) in many areas those stickers could count as child pornography. https://www.google.com/search?q=child+pornography+urination

2) Calvan is not peeing, he is pissing, unless you have been henpecked to the female only perspective. Men piss, women pee, and small children tinkle.

lol, no. They are drawings, drawings of someone under 18 is not the same as a picture of an actual person under 18. Plus how can you define the age something someone drew.

U.S. v. Whorley

U.S. v. Whorley was the first case to test manga within the confines of the PROTECT Act.

Dwight Whorley used computers at the Virginia Employment Commission, a public resource, to download manga alleged to depict "children engaged in explicit sexual conduct with adults."

He was charged with "knowingly receiving" child pornography for printing out two cartoons, and viewing others, 19 counts in all.

In 2006, a jury found Whorley guilty for "receiving" obscene cartoons, for which he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with a 10-year probation thereafter.

His sentence was aggravated by a previous conviction for receiving actual child pornography.

If this were his first offense, he would have been subject to a minimum sentence of "not less than 5 years and not more than 20 years" in prison.

Whorley was sentenced under the same guidelines governing actual child pornography.

And now he's in prison for being a weeaboo who likes CP.

It's a gigantic grey area.  There have been cases where it's dismissed, others where they get some sort of conviction.  The problem is, even if it's not technically illegal as child pornography it can still be deemed as "obscene" in some places, meaning you could still be prosecuted but just not on the same level as actual child pornography.  The last I heard was in 2008 (or something) where some high court ruled that there is no child victim thus can't be considered child pornography.

A lot of THIS!  It's not vulgar, it's pee and a smidge of buttcrack.  It's joked about by the entire populace, from priests to broadcast television.

As well as the article mentioning constantly that the stickers are ILLEGAL.

It's a spoof, a satire, a parody, or what have you.  Sure, tasteless, and sad too if you love that character, but ILLEGAL?  Hardly.

That people were ticketed and such for having them on their cars, is ludicrous, absolutely batshiat insane.

/speaking in principle, btw

The stick figure people, and the ones who advertise their kid's name, number, team and sport.

Oh, and the "Baby on Board" people (I understand that that's supposed to be an alert in case there's an accident, but I suspect most of the people who have them do so as a cutesy preemptive "think of the children!" maneuver.)

It really sucks that it had to be Calvin, created by a cartoonist with such a high degree of artistic integrity. Anyone with a Calvin sticker, be it a religious one or a peeing one, should get punched straight in the testicles several times.

I rarely appreciate any given car sticker.  It's got to be clever and somewhat unique.

Some few exceptions or actual humor.  Something about not touching the car, on a real shiatbox with peeling paint and hail dents for example.  Proves that person to be not "so serious".

Jesus fish are fine I suppose, as it is effectively them self identifying as morons. Pissing Calvin is ok for that as well, you know you'll never get any fine discussion out of that driver.

/then again, a lot of things exist from previous owners and were just never removed...so eh

Stickers on cars are just like tattoos. Why bother putting something on that you would never put on a wall in your house?
But then again, it is clear that lots of people have peeing Calvins, tribal pictures and butterflies on their walls.

Wow, some of you people really get upset upset over how others chose to decorate their vehicle, you're probably the same people who find it necessary to insult someones choice of beer, restaurant, etc. too.

It's one thing to get annoyed with another person when their actions have a direct impact on you, but if seeing a sticker on someones car as you drive past it bothers you, you have some serious issues.
