For people who want to spend $2,000 to make their living room look like a trashy neighborhood.

You go to all the trouble of making porcelain shoes and then have alligator clips and an exposed battery pack as a power source?  Weak.

I'm sensing a trick to try in the future. Induction coil close to a power line that's enough to pick up a few volts, a resistor and an LED.

You might not even need that induction coil.

Lights under power lines.

timujin: an exposed battery pack

I believe that's a transformer, to drop the mains voltage down to something that won't kill people if when they touch the exposed wires. But I agree it's very poorly done -- it would have been easy to follow the motif and make the transformer look like, well, a transformer.

It's a well known and HIGHLY illegal use of induction. If you get caught the power company can and will sue your ass into next farking week because they take all forms of power theft (including creating passive losses) extremely seriously.  High recommend you don't do that.

Looks like a transformer to me to, but honestly...a few minutes of work and you could have run insulated wiring appropriately and still made it look similar, rather than deliberately leaving exposed conductor, which is, aside from a massive health and safety hazard, a farking insurance destroyer. If a home owners/renters company finds out you're deliberately stringing live, exposed, conductor across your damn rooms, you're done, they won't insure you. And if someone gets hurt or the place burns down and they find out, you're not covered.

It's flat out stupid. Even if it was placed way above reach, a balloon, a broom, a cat, a bird, dust, a slip-and-cup-goes-flying accident...any number of trivial things can get across that and short and then you've either got a fire or an explosion plus a fire.  God forbid you've got it on an oversized breaker, then shiat can just burn until it sets all your wiring and walls on fire before the breaker trips.

Right, it's a transformer, which I should have known since I've strung these kind of lights before.  It's not an insurance issue, this is low voltage.  It's essentially an artistic take on this:
