Indeed. It's obvious the author's an idiot. South Carolina mustard-based BBQ is far superior to North Carolina's vinegar. Both are way better than KC's sugar and ketchup, and none of them hold a flame to Texas brisket.

Yeah, I don't know how people came up with that vinegar-based goof, but every other style beats it hands down.

That being said, regarding the rest of TFA: I was initially all like "They're doing it AGAIN?"  and then I read the caselaw link.  Still: props to Melvin for giving Maurice the cold shoulder about his segregationist ways.

The entire Bessinger family makes some legendary SC BBQ, but Maurice pretty much became persona non grata in the family because of his overt racism, among other eccentricities. The other brothers ran some great BBQ restaurants of their own, many of which are in the Charleston area. Damned fine BBQ. It's been a while since I lived there, but I think Maurice's brothers still publicly and openly despised him up until his recent death.

Grew up with the NC style, but I'm an open minded glutton, so I love them all, except that KC crap.

Oh yeah, and racists are bad and court rulings that open the door for "it's my religion" defenses are probably going to end up creating lots more problems before all is said and done.

MrBallou: Grew up with the NC style, but I'm an open minded glutton, so I love them all, except that KC crap.

I'm with you there. There's not much BBQ I won't gladly consume. The thing is, while we tend to put the emphasis on the sauce- especially when you're talking about Eastern NC vs. Lexington-style- it's not necessary. It's an addition, after the meat is cooked. If there was no sauce involved, you'd still have an awesome pile of slow-cooked, smoky pig.

Those freaking KC burnt ends would be absolutely inedible without sauce.

'Course, now I live at the intersection of Central Texas meat market brisket, and South Texas barbacoa... which are whole different discussions altogether.

Memphis style BBQ is best, and I live in NC right between the two brands of NC style BBQ. The vinegar stuff is crap, while the Lexington variety is still not as good as slow cooked Memphs style BBQ.

The Hobby Lobby ruling is shiat and given some time it will produce some nice headline grabbing ridiculous applications, but bringing up cases from before the RFRA is completely irrelevant.

I have a lot of family up in Memphis, and I swear by Memphis-style ribs, but I am fully loyal to SC-style pulled pork, having grown up there. I make my own mustard sauce from scratch, too.

Still, this is within living memory ( well, I was practically a newborn back then), so it's valid, giving the subject matter, IMHO.

/ I'd still chuckle if Clarence Thomas was turned away from a joint like this...given his legal opinions....

Yes, because the Supreme Court ruled that a closely held company (and one that pays a minimum wage of $11 to PT, $14 FT) could only be forced to pay for 16 forms of birth control and not 20, businesses will now be allowed to shoot African-American customers on sight.   And Robin Thicke raped twenty women last night.

I'm from Kansas and even I hate that KC ketchup and molasses crap.   Give me a mustard sauce or a dry rub, keep the ketchup away.

I usually end up making my own mustard sauce when I grill ribs and I'll dry rub the loins.

I don't care if you are Hitler and own a farking deli, you gotta think about not alienating the clientele.
And besides, why would Hitler own a delt?
Or a cracker think owing a BBQ joint in the south and alienating his neighbors would be a good business model?
Wouldn't the majority of the city boycott his flaming ass?

Because he doesn't particularly like to eat there, and claiming he doesn't eat there for ideological reasons makes himself feel better and allows him to show his devotion.  We all do stuff like this.

2014-07-02 02:14:50 PM
And if you read to the end of the article, you find this:

And now for you who actually took the time to read the story instead of basing your outrage solely off a headline before sharing with an ALL CAPS blurb of "SEE? I TOLD YOU THE SOUTH WAS FULL OF RACISTS!!!", this case was heard by the Supreme Court in 1968.

Texas brisket isn't barbecue: it's a smoked piece of meat. True barbecue has a sauce, preferably a molasses based one.

Dear Maurice: I don't care how good your shiat is, you will never get my business again. You haven't for 15 years, but hopefully this will be your kiss of death you sorry ass excuse for human excrement. To say that the RFRA is a bad law is to imply that most of the federal register contains perfectly sound, well thought out laws.  Sure, there probably are some, but most laws I've looked up I've thought 'WTF am I reading?'.

2014-07-02 02:15:56 PM
Well, there are Christian sects that have some religious-based problems with black people (and white people, I would imagine, in different groups). I know the particular case in the article is old, but the groups are still around.

Maybe they'll get a sympathetic court to decide their beliefs are legit some day, like Hobby Lobby did.

There's not enough genuine outrage here, so I guess I'll be the one to start the fire:

Barbecue sauce in all its forms sucks donkey balls. If your food is so bland and tasteless you need to smother it in that crap, you're a sh*t cook.

I think the best one I've heard so far concerning Hobby Lobby is, "if your religion is so damn important to you, then why do you sell products made in China, where Christian oppression is out of control?"
