If China doesn't get serious about taking better care of the environment, it wont matter what anyone else does. Closing golf courses can only be considered a good thing.

Since the ban the number of courses have tripled.  They built 640+ and tore down two?  Great effort China.

They're getting serious...er. They have some great alternative energy initiatives and they're getting ready to bring some really advanced reactors online. I'd go as far as to say they're doing better than us.

My brother was working at a Jinhai Lake Golf Club outside Beijing.  He ended up leaving after they hosted the Miss China World pageant in 2012.  He mentioned something about how the lake was somehow protected from being used for water even though there was a water problem in Beijing.

He left after not being able to deal with the nepotism, the fact he was American meant he wasn't going to advance any further, and oh yeah, the golf course construction was being held up by people refusing to move.

He's still working in Beijing though.  Loves it there.

If they're concerned about land use and wasted water, they should stop building ghost cities where nobody lives. You know how much water it takes to pour all that concrete?

Yes.

He deals with it with a face mask that looks like Bane's from the last Batman movie.  Plus he's 6'4".

And it has gotten more popular ever since. Maybe "trendy" isn't the right word but it is still a stupid thing to hate on. As a society we have achieved a state where some resources can be used for entertainment. Tastes in entertainment vary.  I guess it is more a case of "STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE.

I'd almost rather see a golf course on prime real estate at the edge of town instead of another "Pleasant Crossing at Ranco Blanco" filled with HOA controlled McMansions that have lot sizes that allow a maximum of 8' between houses or more strip malls containing Super Cuts, Radio Shack and GNC outlets.
