I would think Belgians are perfectly capable of understanding German considering how often they've been invaded.

Pretty sure that the German translation of "Belgium" equates to "Army footpath"

Belgium is France's screened-in porch, where invading Germans pause to wipe their feet before entering.

How dare Klinsmann act like he's the coach of the USMNT. Who the fark does he think he is?

Yes, if not for the language thing, the US was about to get a fair shake from the refs.

Phil Jackson would complain about the refs after game 1 and Jordan shoots 25 FT in game 2. This is an old technique used by any good coach.

Klinsmann is the perfect coach for the US. He's been nothing short of fantastic in terms of extracting the most potential out of all the players.

In a followup, Belgium now upset that the new replacement speaks Spanish as half of the US team now has an unfair advantage.

The fact that the US got into the Round of 16 quiets a lot of the criticism of him dropping Landon Donovan. As a team, the US is playing excellent soccer. They'll need it today against Belgium, who has better players but hasn't been as cohesive a unit.

Langston: Landon Donovan

I love when they go to him for a comment in his three sizes too small suit and you can just tell he's praying for a US loss.  Their success is eating him alive.  I felt bad when they left him off the team until I saw that...repeatedly.

Agreed. Even the kerfuffle over his statement before the cup about how there's no we will win was a great piece of psychology. It was a helluva lot more motivating than the usual empty platitudes. It's just that Americans can't handle being told they're not the best ever.

He's good, but he does make some obvious mistakes that you don't expect to see at this level, on this stage. Unfortunately, the US doesn't have anybody comprehensively better than him at that position yet.

I think he's done a very good job overall, but because of his role and visibility, his mistakes get magnified. For what it's worth, fans in every country have a lightning rod that they will blame because of visible mistakes or failure to excel to their potential. Portugal has Ronaldo's underperformance, Germans are lamenting Özil's lackadaisical pace, Italy is criticizing Balotelli, and Spain has railed on Xabi Alonso's mistakes. Every team has a goat, and unfortunately Bradley is facing the most heat because he's at the center of the US team.

There's a reason Roma went out and got Strootman and Nainggolan last season, and why Bradley is currently playing in MLS when he should be in the prime of his career at age 26.

Shouldn't FIFA want the US to stay in the tournament at the expense of Belgium? I mean the US has bought the most number of tickets outside of Brazil and are a much larger TV market.

...the thing with corrupt groups is that they often let their hatreds get in the way of their profit. Which is why you see southerners whose very livelihoods depend on migrant and immigrant workers at the forefront of the "deport 'em all" movements. And here, FIFA lets their hatred of the "American pigs" shine through.  In their eyes, nothing would damage the sport more than the United States winning the World Cup, even if the United States gives them the largest share of their profits.

The ref shouldn't be able to speak the language of either team; he should go off what he sees, not off what players tell him. They aren't exactly impartial.

In the history of US soccer, they are playing extremely well. Compared to the rest of the world, you have a point.

Now consider the fact that well over 90% of the best athletes in the US have probably never played soccer competitively.

Soccer is probably the first sport any suburban kid plays. I'd guess a lot more than 10% of American professional athletes have played soccer as a youth.

Just a lazy punk who does not hustle well on defense. And makes too many mindless 1 touch passes back to sender. Nothing wrong with that pass, unless you do it too often. Then it's just a lack of creativity.
