Didn't see a thread... sorry if I missed it again.

First match France vs Nigeria in the battle of the middle white flags.

France has been a favorite in this cup, winning their first match 3-0 against Honduras before beating the Swiss 2-5, and securing the lead in their group with a 0-0 draw to Ecuador.

Nigeria snuck through the first two matches with a 0-0 draw to Iran, and a 1-0 win over Bosnia. But it would be their 2-3 loss to Argentina which surprised many, but in the end it is likely too little to give the French any fear of a defeat here.

Second Match Germany vs Algeria

Germany effectively knocked Portugal out after their first game where they beat the Tumbling Crynaldos 4-0 in a major stunner, they followed this up with a draw to Ghana and a comfortable 1-0 win over the United States

Algeria lost their first match to a poor looking Belgian side 2-1, before putting 4 past South Korea, and finished it off with a draw against Russia allowing them to slide into the Round of 16.

There's been a lot of talk about how Algeria wants revenge for the 1982 match fixing scandal which kept Algeria out of the round of 16 when Germany and Austria conspired together to get Germany above Algeria in the table and then essentially stopped playing. Honestly? I don't think this is going to come into play at all, the players were not even alive when this happened (okay, other than Klose :P) even Grandpa Robben was -2 years old. This was an unfortunate moment in Cup history, but it's just press chatter, nothing more. Algeria should not pose a threat for the Germans.

After the surprises we've had so far in this cup, you may be right.

It'll end up a Algeria vs Switzerland final.

D'oh, have Bayern on the mind. He's not German... but you get the point.

Dead for Tax Reasons: or fatigue due to observation of ramadan?

I think this may have some impact for sure. We were discussing it briefly yesterday and probably going to have some people breakign the rules as it's for their own health and safety (which liberal Muslims agree is an okay reason to break the fast), but if they don't, it's gonna be really, really, really hard to not get anything in during a long and hot futbol match. Oezil said he's not fasting today (though I hope the Germans don't play him anyway), but I'd say the majority of the Algerians are Muslims and who knows how many of them would be okay with not-fasting today... we'll have to see.

If they can get a soccer loving iman to agree to it they can be excused from the fast. The Quran has loopholes for various people to not observe the fast.

So all the US needs to do is beat Belgum, probably Argentina and then Costa Rica in order to face Germany once more in the finals.

Book it, done.

I really hope the US wins tomorrow because I'll be at a party 5th Jul and it would be great to have the game on there.

If Nigeria wins maybe that will free up my millions of US dollar being held by the Bank of Lagos.

In theory, this should be our first weak day of R16 with France and Germany cruising. But then again, this world cup has Costa Rica in the QF so I guess all bets are off.

It definitely will be less exciting. Mexico choking was the highlight of tournament so far. It was good to tease my Mexican in laws about it.

I wouldn't call that a choke.  the equaliser goal was well-earned by the Dutch and the Robben penalty was, well, we all know what it was.  they got their hearts ripped out Aztec style but i wouldn't say a choke.

watched the game live with Nadie_AZ at a 90% Dutch crowd;  when they hit that equalizer the roar was astonishing.  the conga line of about 7-8 dutch in front of the mexico area was in poor taste.  the mexico contingent was not happy.  i was half expecting something to go down.

Maybe choke is bad choice of words. It was nice to tease the family over it. It was worth the scolding from the wife afterwards.

i was a neutral observer;  i hate mexico as a rule, but i'd gotten accustomed to NED underachieving.  i was disappointed that the ref bougth robben's flop but let far mroe physical play go on throughout the game.  the one thing you want from a refereee is consistency, in any sport, and there was little yesterday.  robben should have been cautioned early for diving but wasn't, and that led obviously to the PK.  yet, mexico caught a couple of yellows on challenges that were physical but in at least one situation, wasn't even a foul.  the ref couldn't decide apparently when tackles were fouls vs when they were 'play on' situations.

congrats to NED but i hope the football gods are watching their next game.  robben especially.
