So they're going to fill Soldier Field to watch a match that isn't even happening there.

Hopefully FIFA will keep that in mind when they get around to stripping Qatar of the 2022 bid.

We can only hope, dude. I can't see Qatar getting stripped, much less the US getting the bid, only because FIFA is populated by idiots, and it starts right at the top.

If there was a 2022 World Cup in the US, I would buy tickets for as many games as possible.

If they stripped Qatar, that might affect the number and monetary amount of bribes they might receive in the future! Unacceptable!

Yes, the US is terrified of Belgium, with their 4 goals scored against 3 opponents, including two 1-0 wins over powerhouses Russia and South Korea.

By the way, uh.......remember the Portugal game? :-)

Free Radical: B.. b... but, nobody whose great-grandfather was born here even watches soccer!

My dad was 40 in 1970 and knew nothing but American football, but he saw the growth potential of soccer in the US. He and two other men started SAY Soccer in Ohio. I was on the first SAY team in Cincinnati (Finneytown Falcons) and we had to wait a while before there was another team to play. The first year's practices/games were in my back yard because there were no facilities available and we weren't allowed to use football fields.

His forecast for the growth of soccer was optimistic regarding the professional level, but youth level programs exceeded everyone's expectations. I think it's finally gaining traction now for 2 reasons: first, a larger percentage of the USA is made up of people from a place where soccer is king and second, there are now kids whose fathers, and even grandfathers, have played so it's an experience they can share, like baseball's legacy.

I'm not going to oversell the Belgians, they're not playing particularly well. But, they have won their three matches, that's all you can ask of them.

They've played the Gold Cup final and World Cup qualifiers at Soldier Field since the renovation. It would have been fine for the World Cup. It wasn't included in the 2022 bid because the city had been too busy with an attempt to get the Olympics that most people here didn't want, among other things, and were pitching a fit when it came time to submit for the World Cup. So the city didn't even submit a bid to be included in the World Cup (a bid that undoubtedly would have been accepted since the headquarters of US Soccer are about a mile away from the stadium)

While Soldier Field is certainly in a better location and has some great views (despite the UFO that landed on top of it), I would think Toyota Park would be the more logical choice, as it is the home of the Chicago Fire.

Soccer is incredibly boring, so it's probably better to be in a large group of people that all like to pretend it's exciting. "Group think."

Moving the venue to Soldier Field means that soccer fans watching the game can now drink alcohol, which would DEFINITELY improve the viewing experience. I cannot possibly imagine watching soccer stone-cold sober.

When they go to college football/NFL games before November, or baseball in the summer, they're actually at the game where it's happening right in front of them. This is soccer...on a screen...then again, the experience...I get it. It's not like the yuppie Cubs fans have anything to be excited about this time of year, so if the shoe fits, may as well put it on.

Dead for Tax Reasons: not saying this is accurate, but

They played the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup final at Soldier Field, and the FIFA requirement for World Cup pitch size is also required for confederation championships. I suppose CONCACAF could just be ignoring that rule, but I think they can fit the full size playing surface there.  The issue is that there isn't as much space around the field as at some other venues; it does not have the additional space FIFA wants, but they're ok without it if you're using a stadium that was previously built. They just want all new stadiums built for the event to have that space.

Blessed be Chicago's public transport. I wish Arlington would get on board with trains & buses*, especially since Rangers Ballpark & Cowboys Stadium are riiiiiiiiiiiiight next to each other.

In other news, Cowboys Stadium is also hosting a watch party for free, including free parking. I wish I could go, but it's quite the drive & I already "called in sick" for the Germany match, so I think they're onto me.

*Not sure if  Arlington is still the nation's largest city with no public transportation since the city bought a bus recently. Literally. One bus.

I have REALLY enjoyed talking to big fans of soccer these past few weeks. Most people are excited to help me understand something they really enjoy. I think most people get that enjoyment of a sport is not a finite resource. My watching it does not detract from anyone else. It's very strange to watch people get possessive of something like this.

And from 2010. My daughter's summer camp took a field trip to the Death Star, in which I begged to go as a chaperone. This was taken while all the kids played American Football on the field & the adults all sat around in a ring around the field & watched the World Cup on that hugeass screen. It was a good day.

Take a look at Soldier Field exterior shots before and after.  The "new" Soldier Field looks like a spaceship landed inside the old one because they wanted to preserve the colonnades (it lost its historic designation anyway, because just look at it). However, it's actually resulted in a stadium with few if any bad seats. Because they built up rather than out, even the seats at the top on the sides have a pretty good angle on watching the game, and it's much louder.  But it still looks ridiculous from the outside.

As for the Decemberists thing, it stems from Obama having a rally in Portland that brought in like 60,000 people and Republicans tried to poo-poo it by saying that all those people only showed up because the Decemberists were playing.

You assume wrong. Parking under Grant Park and Millenium Park is as much as Soldier Field. I paid like $34 at Millennium Park the other day because I missed the train. I don't know what kind of beer sales they had going at GP, but apparently Chicago doesn't sell cheap beer like you have in NYC; Soldier Field won't be significantly more than any other event or locale like this.

I joined up with a facebook group that has been SUPER patient with all of my questions. But what better way to get others interested? From what I can tell, the main reason people hate certain sports is just a lack of understanding. Want more soccer? Want it to be popular & televised? Help bring more people into it. Seems so simple.

I did just that. Thank you. I did get to drive by Soldier Field a few years ago on my way to the airport. It was really beautiful & I did indeed have my face shoved up against the glass purring an "ooooooh" as we drove by. And no lie, "Super Bowl Shuffle" came on the radio just as we were passing.  It was really beautiful.

Indeed. That's how I learned about football (the kind the Redskins & Cowboys attempt to play) when I lived in England. I'll happily explain soccer/cricket*/rugby as best I can to people who want to get into the sport. The more the merrier.

I'm not sure what your idea of cheap is, but there are a shiatload of bars in Chicago where you can find $1-2 shiatty macros and $3-4 craft or microbrews. Hell, I live right next to one in a nice area of the West Loop.

There are also a bunch of overpriced places but it's not hard to find a bar that has beer for much cheaper than a sporting event.

That was the "old" Soldier Field. The "new" Soldier Field is basically a completely new stadium built inside the old one's foot print. The field area is small and it's now the 2nd smallest stadium seating-wise in the NFL.
