Our British friend obviously isn't a Cubs fan or follows the Red Sox. I think that US fans know the pain of defeat well enough, we just follow different sports, and we just don't let it get us all down in our bitters...

The flow of illegal immigrants which live in multi-million dollar homes in which its own countryman cannot even afford. England does this quite well!

That's an interesting way of looking at it, Cubs/Browns/Royals/Bucks fans aside.

Say what you will about America, but at least we don't suck in sports where we host the world's top league.

NFL style football, baseball and the NBA all have the best leagues in the world right here.

Our afterthought sport, soccer, we're better at it this year than the country that invented it.

The big reason for it is that soccer is just a momentary distraction here.  The World Cup is the biggest sporting event ever in much of the world, but for us it's something to watch halfheartedly since hockey and basketball seasons are over and football hasn't started yet.  It gives everyone who doesn't give a damn about baseball a few games to watch.

Yeah pretty much, I seen a video the other day of an English footie fan who attacked a fellow English fan because they lost; bit off his ear even. I got to travel to england once and joined a Bus full of beer'd up fan's going to a football match, I can say I've seen a few of these guys before,
just look for that group of overly drunk football fans decked out in their team jersey and willing to fight everyone not rooting for their team.

It's not uncommon for pubs in England to ban team colors just as bars in the US sometimes ban biker or gang colors to help prevent fights from breaking out.

It truly does take a special brand of total and complete wanker to be simultaneously arrogant and self-pitying, but that's England fans and the English press for you.

Also, incidentally, I have lived in the US for the past three years and throughout this World Cup have had very pleasant discussions with Americans who are following the event and supporting their team. They've all been excellent fans in my experience. They're enthusiastic, they're hopeful, and they understand and appreciate their team's role as hard working underdogs.

I would love the US to win it all , if for no other reason that the Footie world to lose its collective mind.  Bonus points if it happened by beating Brazil in the final as the entire farking country would lose its shiat.

I imagine it's not likely to happen this time, but it probably *will* happen someday. And on that day, yes, I will be laughing my ass off at the rest of the world having a collective psychological meltdown and going berserk. I don't care about soccer, think it's boring as hell, and I don't think I've watched a single minute of play in years, and I'd still watch that just for the hilarity.

None of the fellow Brits whom I know ever thought England had any chance of winning the WC. Now, I will admit that it would have been nice to win at least one match, but we didn't, deal with it. The US has played well so far and deserves to be in the last 16. It will be a tough one against the Mayofries on Tuesday, but even if they lose, they can hold their heads high.

So you're saying you like it because other people don't? Sounds like hipster reasoning to me.

And then he claims "anarchist."

Did you have to move your beard out of the way to type that?

If you didn't I'm at least impressed you could do it without falling off of your bicycle.

If America could get all of its sub-5'10" elite athletes to convert to soccer instead of Quixotically attempting to be pro cornerbacks, wide receivers, and point guards, the World Cup would never leave this hemisphere.

The greatest soccer player in the world is a 5'6" white guy.

You ain't a real USA fan if you have a backup euroville team, that just makes you a lib, and libs aren't real Americans, so nice try on hiding your fair weather fan jerseys for Italy and Spain but leave the American support to the real Americans.

Well I just want the team to win, won't cry if they lose or feign disappointment which hipsters would do.

My beard is closely cropped and I have had for 15 years now, mainly because I look like a kid without it and the wife likes it.

No bike and no favorite bands other than those everyone has heard of before me.

It doesn't look like the World Cup is going to leave this hemisphere anyway.  The Old World hasn't taken a pounding like this since the Revolution.

You'll probably be pretty disappointed then, because a lot of non-US soccer fans would find that hilarious as well.
In fact, should the US face Brazil in the finals, most soccer fans would probably support the US for several reasons - but mostly, because people tend to root for the underdog anyway instead of having record-winner Brazil win it again.

You've got to realize a point the article is making:
the US hasn't got a big history in international soccer yet, so its list of traditional enemies and rivalries at the World Cup is rather short, there isn't some score to settle about some goal 30 years ago; you might have gotten a hint of this with facing Ghana again, who were close to knocking the US out for the third time in a row.

---
Same thing is probably true for those few guys in the World Cup threads comparing the confederation results who are apparently imagining that UEFA nations feel something else than Schadenfreude when another long-time rival bites the dust.
For example, given their record from the last four big tournaments, Germans have to be deeply disappointed that Italy and Spain didn't make it out of the group stage:

WC 2006: lost semi-final against Italy
Euro 2008: lost final against Spain
WC 2010: lost semi-final against Spain
Euro 2012: lost semi-final against Italy

/ I'm also sure the Dutch are crying that they'll have to play against Cost Rica instead of Italy in the quarter final

2014-06-29 11:32:36 PM
Also, don't tell the Queen, but Costa Rica has no standing army. MI:6 could kidnap everyone and then England would have a decent team again, especially a team that knows how to take penalty kicks.
