This looks like one of those mostly theoretical and extremely limited "exploits" with no known implementations (the Weeners on that article points out the ridiculously tight constraints on what could theoretically be done with it.

Seems like the only reason anyone cares at all is because it's in the password-storing section of the code, so there is an infinitesimally small risk that some extremely OCD malware writer could come up with a way to get your fark.com password. Maybe.

I still don't do my banking on my phone, though.

On an only tangentially related topic I'm building a new box who's total purpose is to run Neverwinter nights, I am thinking of stripping the boot drives(2 x 40GB 7200 RPM IDE) but I'm not sure this will give me the boost I am looking for since the game won't fit on them(current install is ~50GB) so should I leave a single boot drive and strip the "storage drives" (probably a couple of 80GB or maybe a 120 and a 160) or try to leave the core components on the 7200's (ie executables etc) but put all the game big but load once things(modules, hak packs etc) on the un-stripped storage drive?

Thoughts?

Since it sounds like you're dealing with pretty old hardware, Why not just buy this 7200rpm drive for 20 dollars instead of trying to finagle something out of your current hardware?

Imma have to agree with phedex here, your IDE drives even in a raid0 won't match the throughput or frankly peace of mind that a new sata drive would.  I have to ask though:  Never winter nights 2?  What's the rest of the system like because if you're tinkering with IDE drives the rest might be something you should focus on instead.

Quantumbunny: not sure why anyone would be stuck older, even phones like the Galaxy S3 got a kitkat update... and that's like 2 years old at this point.

I just recently (i.e. 2 weeks ago or so) managed to upgrade my phone to an S4. Up until then, I was dealing with a Samnsung "Mesmerize" (The US Cellular special version of Samsung's original "Galaxy S"). It doesn't appear to be even possible to upgrade it beyond "Gingerbread", except for the last available "nightly" build of cyanogenmod which the old phone is now running (10.1, which I think is "Ice Cream Sandwich").

I can't justify another half-grand every year for new phones...

The old "phones" don't stop being useful either - they make great "tiny tablets" for maps, media-playing, basic internet use, etc. I still make regular use of the old Motorola CLIQ I have for stuff like that. (Of course, I'm DOUBLY not putting my bank and credit-card information on that one either...)

(Pretty sure I'll be able to upgrade the S4 to Lik-A-Stix or whatever the new Android is once the code is available and omnirom or cyanogenmod has it).

50GB is god damn massive for an RPG released in 2002, how many mods are you running on the damn thing?

Unless you meant Neverwinter, the POS RPG-MMO that Cryptic put out after having had the bare cheek to originally announce it as being NWN+toolkit.  Because if you meant that my suggestion is: Napalm, lots and lots of napalm.  Then destroy those disks as they'll never be clean again.

albatros183: Well apparently I am thread jacking as post disappear so suggestions should go to me @ gmail

I can still see your original.  Do you know if you have two completely separate IDE controllers on board?  If so perhaps I'd recommend make your boot drive one of the 40s but single, keep the other 40 as another independent (and later put your pagefile on it) and then install with the two large data drives as well independently but on different controllers and use Windows itself to create a software raid0 using the Disk Utility.  Unless you're often booting/rebooting the system the boot drive itself doesn't *have* to be that fast but the data drives in raid0 will give you a loading boost for the stuff you put on them like the game(s).  Keeping the pagefile on its own drive will also minorly benefit since that's the only thing that disk will be doing so it'll be a little better at it then sharing that duty with your regular system stuff or the games.

If you get the phone through a provider, the privider flashes it wuth a customize version of the OS before giving it out. This doesn't allow for updates unless you root it and reinstall.

RAID with IDE drives is not really a good idea.  Sure it can be done but thats not the point.  You can also race Yugo's, but no one will pay to watch the race.
