Wasn't there a thread a few hours ago about the carbon footprint of mammals?  So letting the whales increase their numbers means a larger carbon fin-print?

No, the timeline was changed when Kirk was born so the whale probe will still be coming. So will V'ger. So they don't have to worry about writing anything new for a couple movies.

But now they've got new ways to deal with things.  A drop of red matter and V'ger and that hot little bald chick go away.  You want to send a whale probe?  Bring it!  We'll open up a space/time rip and send your probe right back up your whale-sized alien ass!!

I think that after word of Kirk's reputation in the original series got out, Starfleet made all new transfers to the Enterprise tell him that when they first reported for duty.

The entire north Pacific population has been estimated at nearly 22,000 whales, having grown from about 1,000 in the late 1990s, and the central north stock is just under 6,000 whales, the Alaska Dispatch newspaper reported.

Isn't Japan having a big problem getting anyone to actually eat the whale meat they collect "for research"? At this point it seems like they're hunting whales entirely out of spite.

I was lucky enough to work for the Inupiat Eskimos for several years, and they were happy I was curious about traditional foods and invited me to join them a few times.

Whale is good. Pass on the seal.

Apparently, whale used to be an important and major source of protein in school lunches right after the war, so many older Japanese people are sick to death of it. I think the majority of people eating it are foreigners like me and younger people.

They are only doing it out of spite. 100%.

The Japanese government heavily subsidizes whaling. They own about 10 years worth of supply for the current demand and it's just sitting around in freezers. They're trying to get it back into schools by offering it for free, but it's hard to prepare (it's not really good unless smoked or fried) and it has a good amount of mercury in it. And yet there are articles about preserving whaling as an ancient tradition, and right-wing politicians get people frothed up about how foreigners are trying to tell them what to do. The Japanese are assholes.

Wow, that was pretty racist. Also wrong.

Raw whale is tasty as hell. I actually tried frying it once and that absolutely destroyed the flavour.

There are countries in northern Europe that also have a tradition of whaling and they don't take half as much crap as the Japanese do. There is definitely some racism at work here.

Explain to me how that's racist. Because Japan isn't a white nation I can't disagree with them? You're racist.

If you can't see how that's racist, there is no picture I can draw to explain it to you.

Have you ever eaten whale, BTW? I'd like to know where your opinions about how it should be prepared come from.
