(Northwest Indiana Times)   Police from four departments shut down the St. Thomas More Festival in Munster, IN, after a brawl breaks out . But what else do you expect when you have an event that caters to the notoriously rowdy fans of 16th Century English dynastic politics?   (nwitimes.com ) divider line

I grew up near Munster.  We always regarded Munster kids as the fancy, rich kids.  When the rich kids are of Lake County brawling at a church festival, that gives you an idea of how affluent Lake County is.

Everything about the divorce thing was politics.  The catholic church didn't deny kings divorces with much regularity.  But powerful families have powerful connections, Henry 8 should've married "down".

Also, Henry VIII couldn't knock up women with a son. That was a big part of it. Well, he the times he did get sons; they died in infancy or were very weak. But, I agree, if Henry had married some peasant girls; nobody would have given a shiat how many he married.

If having people burned alive for disagreeing with you on religious matters gets you a sainthood, what do you have to do just to get an honourable mention by Il Papa, a slight crisping with a large hair dryer?

Blame it on his brother Arthur for dying and leaving a well-connected widow which he believed he "had" to marry.

1. Henry had sons.  Henry had lots of sons.  What Henry didn't have is legitimate sons who could take the throne after he died.  Big difference.
2.Henry couldn't have married a peasant girl if he wanted to (which he didn't).  Henry VII had arranged Henry VIII's marriage to secure the stability of the Tudor reign (remember, the English had just come out of a civil war twenty years before H8's wedding).  Marrying Arthur to Catherine of Aragon was probably the single greatest win of H7's career outside Bosworrth.  And his biggest blunder was spending the dowry too quick.
3. H8 could probably have gotten the annulment except (a) they made such a big deal about Arthur and Catherine not farking back when H8 and Catherine got married, and (b) Charles V was the most powerful man in Europe, Catherine's nephew, and had basically told the Pope he would personally rip the Papal gizzzard out through the Papal kneecap if his aunt was declared a whore.
4. Henry VIII was a farking megalomaniacal asshole.

Henry's problem was not a simple one.  He was basically in a perfect storm of "damned if you do; damned if you don't".  Though #4 was probably the deciding factor in making the problem intractable.

Terribly embarassing, that. If only it had occurred to him, as the executioner was getting ready, to say 'I recant my Catholicism'.

Mostly because Daddy had spent the dowry, and couldn't figure out how to send her back to Spain without causing a war.

Not quite. Thomas More was found guilty of high treason for not verbally stating that Henry VIII was spiritually superior to the Pope; despite not actually stating that Henry VIII wasn't spiritually superior to the Pope. The real reason is; Thomas didn't attend Anne Boleyn's coronation in person; although he acknowledged her as his queen.

Thomas More was farked. His Judges included Anne's Father, Brother and Uncle. He'd also been charged with several other spurious crimes leading up to this. If they hadn't got him with this; they'd have tried something else.

Surprised things like this don't happen more often. People who go to church festivals come in two kinds - the actual parishioners, and people who will go wherever they can find a place to get wasted on cheap beer and listen to mediocre cover bands. Ne'er the twain shall meet, so the first group tends to head for the exits before sundown and let the second group take over.
