Damn...Beat me too.

Also:  Now this is something the other tour guides won't tell you. In this particular cell-block, Machine Gun Kelly had what we call in the prison system, a "biatch". And one night in a jealous rage Kelly took a make-shift knife or "shiv", and cut out the biatch's eyes. And as if this wasn't enough retribution for Kelly, the next day he and four other inmates took turns pissing into the biatch's ocular cavities. (short pause) This way to the cafeteria!

Iceland has long had laws about names, for awhile there even your surname had to be paternal ala Eiriksson, Peterson, Petersdottir, etc. but I believe that has been reversed

The cool thing is that they still use the old viking names, so they sound like RPG characters when translated into English.

Reversed as in has to be maternal now? So one could have, say, a Hjornydaughter?

Fun Fact: Icelandic phonebooks (these are archaic paper-based contacts lists) are arranged by first names, since last names are patronymic (or matronymic).

I once met a woman who had named her child "Leukemia." Naturally, I was appalled. "Why did you do that?" I demanded. She told me it "sounded pretty."
I said, "But don't you know what Leukemia is?" She told me no, she didn't.
I told her it was a drink like Sangria, just made with white wine.
Needless to say, she never got it...

It's about moderation. It should be unique enough so that seventeen kids don't come trotting up when you call your kid's name. But it shouldn't be so unique that they constantly have to spell it out for people or get mistaken for exotic dancers.

Lots of countries have laws like this, Germany did too.  Its like homeschool, while in theory I guess I support parental freedom to raise your crotchfruit as you please, they should get some protections from retarded ass names.

I'm looking at you Dweezel and Moon Unit Zappa, as well as anyone with the idiotic La/Da/Ja prefix on a name, or Aiden, Brayden, Caden, Hayden, Jayden, Hunter, McKenzie,.

Sounds like a plan in theory... until you realize the asshats who would be in charge of such a committee would be politically-correct and have an agenda of some extreme sort, and force us to use gender-neutral names, misspelled on purpose. In other words, we'd be FORCED to use the crappy names most of us despise seeing hipster, uneducated, and Hollywood parents inflict on their children.

Forcing Icelandic kids to use approved "Icelandic" names smacks exactly of this sort of thing.

The same goes for people who think the government should choose who can procreate. I know we're overrun with 'tards, but really? You really think that's a good idea?

Also, we should limit how many names you give your stupid kid, and rule out stupid hyphonated last names for them.  Pick up to three and one of the parent's surnames (or an arbitrary non hyphonated one) and stick with it - I'm looking at you, Latin America.  Or you, former German defense minister, Karl-Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg.

On the other side, because of Iceland's scrupulous record keeping, the entire country is a genome research facility. Genetic disease can be traced back centuries and gene trigger isolated much more quickly.

It's like when they wanted a list of everyone you'd slept with in the last two years because of that burning sensation in your nether regions. They have a very long list already.

And when someone named Harriet is denied free travel you start to see the lack of wisdom in an official list of names. Either way some people are going to get burned; I'll error on the side that doesn't involve governments denying people rights, paying for name committees, and trapping families Kafka-land. That's just my preference though, I can see how some people think having a silly name is so much worse than losing rights and dealing with bureaucracies.

Sounds like Quebec.  Does Iceland have language police as well?

If you have an english sign up in your store there better be a bigger version above it in French or they'll be coming to fine you and make you fix it,  even if you live in an english area.

The lists aren't static either. New names get added in all the time, after an approval process.
