Actually studies have shown that suicide attempts increase cancer risk. So they couldn't.

Can't help it. Ever since Amazon Prime got a whole bunch of HBO shows, I've binge watched all of The Sopranos, am watching Carnivale now, and after that will bingewatch Rome, which I've never seen.

Oh man.. Rome is really good.  Stick with it for at least 5 eps as it starts kinda slow.  I still watch that and Deadwood from time to time.

I can watch two, maybe three episodes of an hour-long drama at a time before I start getting antsy.

Binge watching is best watching. Also you can wait till a series plays out and then decide whether it's even worth investing the time in or not. Looking at you "Lost".

Watching 3-4 hours ove TV each day is not the same as bing-watching shows,

I know as well as you do that correlation doesn't equal causation.

But they controlled for many factors.

This is good to know. I tried watching but gave up after the first episode. maybe I will try again.

I crochet and am making afghans for everybody in my family for Christmas. I binge watch, not so I can watch TV but so I have something interesting to see while working. I completed about 1/3 of an afghan during OITNB.

So a news agency, which is owned by a large cable company -  who is losing customers to companies that have entire catalogs of shows with no commercials, is saying that binge watching a show is going to kill me?... Well, I'm convinced. I'm going to cancel my Netflix account immediately, and subscribe to cable so that I can live longer.

Haven't they been saying this for the last 50 or so years? The only difference is that now we have the stupid  term "binge watching".

Just put the first season of "The Bridge" on hold at my library so I can binge watch it before season 2 starts. How much is that going to reduce my life expectancy?

Duly noted.  Just upgraded DirecTV and have HBO on demand.  Binged on The Wire and Boardwalk Empire. Looking for something to fill the void left by The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones hiatus.  Gonna give "The Leftovers" a try this weekend.

Justified is worth watching if you've not seen it.

My binge-watching is offset with a good share of physical activities.  Healthy and not overweight - not worried.

This.  Since I'm a single mid-30s dude with no kids, I've got a ton of free time.  I work from say 7-3, then maybe go play 18 holes of golf.  Hit the bar for dinner or drinks, and I'm home by 7 or 8.    That leaves me two or three solid hours left over to do nothing.   And I happen to enjoy TV.  It's not at the expense of a healthy activity, I'm pretty active, I just don't have time-sucking children...

I second the Rome recommend, I'd say it's probably the 4th or 5th best show HBO has put out since they started doing the series thing.  Just for debates sake let's try my order:
Best
1. The Wire
2. The Sopranos
3. Deadwood
4. Boardwalk Empire
5. Rome
6. True Detective
7. Oz
8. Eastbound & Down
9. Game of Thrones
10. Big Love

That list was harder to order than I anticipated.

Per episode it is.  But the character development and plot of the series start to finish was exceptional.  Al Swearengen's character was unique in that he was the primary antagonist but was only an asshole because of the environment in which he operated.  He was benevolent behind the scenes but also strongly advanced his own self interests.  I actually found myself empathizing more with his character than with Seth Bullock.  True Detective is only low because it's new and we haven't seen the whole series yet; I have no doubt it has the potential to be the best series they have ever done.

Question --
I watched Eastbound & Down in the very beginning, then dropped HBO for a while. Now I have it back, and I suppose I need to get caught up (I have watched 2-3 episodes each from the 2012 and 2013 seasons). Is it worth it?  Why is Kenny such a MEGA asshole? Like above and beyond normal????

I think this article to judge so harshly. My partner works his ass off 5 days a week from 6am till 4pm in a very physically taxing job. I work in a high pressure part time job that pays damn good money. I demand we be able to come home in the evenings and watch rubbish telly in our underpants!

E & B is a really interesting show.  On the surface it's a very funny over-the-top comedy that gets it's laughs from the outrageous behavior of Kenny.  Though in the last couple seasons the story arc is actually pretty brilliant in that there are several episodes up front where it really tires you out on him being as asshole and it does bring Kenny's world down around him even though it never gets fully serious.  It really goes to full length to make you lose all faith and any humorous adoration you may have had for Kenny. I had a tough time making it through some of the seasons but was glad I did.  Danny McBride has a great brand for himself but there's a lot more going on under the surface than his brand emotes.

I'm (re)binge watching John From Cincinatti. Sure it's crazy and flawed, but so farking ambitious, and well made. TV show runners should be forced to study it, for both inspiration and cautionary reasons.

Twice as likely? Ridiculous. The only reason I've got to watch the last 3 episodes of "Top of the Lake" today is because I'll be testing out the new tires on the sportbike this weekend.
