No kidding. I wonder how the world would be different today if the first OCO hadn't plowed into the southern ocean...

It's just some harmless Prius repellent. If you think about it, the carbon in those particles is actually being sequestered before it can combine with oxygen and become a greenhouse gas. They're doing the world a favor.

Of course, even if the globe isn't warming (spoilers: it is), cutting down on emissions and switching to greener energy would still do a lot of good in the long term. But it'd cut into corporate profits, therefore it must be destroyed.

You need a Diesel engine to make black smoke like that (unless something is really, REALLY wrong with your engine) so that's even better. Diesels are more fuel-efficient than gasoline engines in the first place.

Although I'm pretty sure that level of soot won't pass muster anywhere vehicles have to be emissions tested.

Even if this manages to convince all the deniers that global warming is real (it won't), there's still a bigger problem: nobody gives a shiat.

I mean, yes, there is a certain fraction of the population that's aware that the first-world lifestyle is bad for the planet and feel somebody should do something about that--it's just, very, very few people are actually willing to make the sacrifices necessary to reverse or even just halt manmade warming. I'm certainly not.

Millions of people are going to die in squalor because we're all selfish assholes. Which is pretty much the human condition.

I once saw an old pickup that had been modified with two exhaust pipes coming out the front grill, pointed upward diagonally so that the smoke would probably blow right in the cab windows while the guy was driving it. It makes me wonder if this is a self-correcting problem, over time.

Colorful pictures from some damn fancy scientician ain't gonna change the way anyone lives.  NdGT was talking about literally seeing it, but the fact is even that wouldn't be enough.  You can literally see it a lot of major cities and especially in China, but people are mostly "meh".  We are farking shiat up hardcore, and people won't want to do anything until it personally inconveniences them, at which point it will be way too late.  People biatch about the baby boomers now, but I can't imagine the vitriol that's going to be spewed at the current generation by their grandchildren.  Those kids are going to be pissed.

No they won't be. The change will happen gradually enough that each year we (they) will adapt to and accept it. After a while they'll even stop grumbling.

In other words, they'll get over it.

No, they'll talk about how people from their past (i.e. now), didn't know any better, and if if they knew what we know now (i.e. in the future), things would have been different. However, I live in a pretty red state, and I can assure you: people do know better. Screw you, though, if you think you're going to interfere with their lifestyle. Millions of people starving, because of global warming? Tough. They should have been born in America, to wealthy parents. Their ability to dehumanize people outside their circle never ceases to amaze me.

If I'm still around, then, I'll certainly be spewing vitriol, if no one else will.

It has happened in the past.
Volcanos blow all kinds of fun materials into the sky and have been a driving factor in climate. They've been linked to mass extinctions and drastic changes in the atmosphere long before humanity was around.
Unlike cars and industry, they haven't been getting any cleaner.

/humanities behavior isn't helping things, but a visualization of it won't clear the matter up if its compared to natural processes.

The soot from Diesels is a known carcinogen and if your diesel is smoking like that it's because you are injecting too much fuel so the fuel efficiency benefit no longer applies. It's not all for show though unlike gas engines you can easily boost the power of Diesels by just adding more fuel and the excessive smoke is just a cool looking by-product. Adding larger Diesel injector nozzles is the Diesel equivalent of the Honda owner adding a giant spoiler and exhaust...except the Diesel upgrade is actually an upgrade.
