There's been about 3 chapters released on his website from Winds of Winter...I'm sure most of the book is done and its going through rewrites by George.

Again George let me say this in the most respectful way possible

Sit your fat ass down and use those overstuffed kielbasa you call fingers and type an ending to the farking story. Stop adding meaningless plot diversions and more new characters than the chinese alphabet every other chapter and JUST GIVE US A FARKING ENDING!

He's read a few more at various book events, as well.

I honestly don't care if it ever ends. The more time I spend in Westeros and Essos, the better.

CSB: I started reading these things years ago when A Clash of Kings was in hardcover, Storm of Swords had not been released yet...liked it enough that I wanted the whole set in 1st edition hardcover so I splurged on a Game of Thrones 1st edition hardcover...you know the one with a silver foil dustjacket and embossed throne on it? Even then it was pricey, I think it was $50.

Fast forward a few years, with GoT mania/HBO series popularity, I think the minimum I'd get for selling it on eBay now would be $200...if/when George ever rolls around to the Toronto area, I could go to a signing with it, bump the value up a bit more.

I refuse to read word one of the books, or watch any of the TV show, until he finsihes the series.  I'm not going to get stuck in a Robert Jordan Wheel of Time situation where he dies before he finishes the series and it never gets completed, or gets completed by someone else working off of his notes.  I'm not optimistic.

So, it looks like Dany will screw around in Essos for yet ANOTHER book- and won't meet up with Tyrion for most of that, if what he says is true.  Jesus christ, can we just get to the war with the Others yet?  Please?  Better yet, how about releasing the damn book so we can finally stop wondering whether Jon is dead or not?

You can tell he got bored with the arc after SoS.  He's only begrudgingly milking it now.  Hell, after the self-proclaimed "dumptruck of cash" he got to sell the rights to HBO, he's probably less motivated than ever.

Not enough note paper to keep writing down all the characters/ helpers/ servants/ slaves; cities, regions, old history, etc... man, what boring reading... yes I would love a great dragon lady vs Baratheon battle... or the white walkers take over 1/2 down Westeros... to the rivers or something... but, why the fark are we still playing around with midgets playing games in Easteros, last chapter I was reading, and yet another semi-contender to the throne thru another hidden child/ long lost cousin... ouch, my bleeding eyes... get off the pot and write something worth reading.

Gave up, back to foobies for my entertainment.

I said this in a thread last week, but the problem he's written himself into is that Dany is ready (and has been) to come over to Westeros and start kicking ass, but he's spread the other plot lines so thin that he now has to keep artificially stalling her. The dragons are big enough to ride, she has her army, there is ZERO reason for her to spend another second in Mereen, but here we are

I have not read the books yet, only the show and these threads. Reading them is on my to-do list in the inter-season hiatus, but I think the show is setting it up the lag pretty well. Book readers can debate how well it aligns with her as written, but she gave herself on a couple of self-tasked missions.

She seems to be learning every time she is in a position of power (Khalisi, Queen of Mereen) that she keeps being short-sighted and is not equipped to lead. She seems to know she needs a strong resume' to succeed in Westeros, that her birthright will not be sufficient. That understanding has been made explicit in her reminiscing about her brother's shortcomings. She seems to be using Mereen/Slaver's Bay as a practice place as well as a credibility boost, and finding that she has much further to go than she thought.

Additionally, she has found herself a moral crusade while she is at it. She seems to deeply feel that slavery has to be eradicated from this corner of the world, and until she succeeds at that, she won't move on to the next task. Given her age, she's probably combining the short-sightedness of youthful goals with youthful idealism. It all seems to be setting up the potential for a very mature and reasonable candidate for the Iron Throne, someone who is actually worthy of it.

Again, this is just the sense I get from the show's portrayal, not sure if it lines up well with her in the books.

HBO already has the highlights from his notes.  That was the deal when they signed him up.  If he can't/won't write fast enough to stay head of the books, HBO 'will' happily hijack his story and finish it for him.  And probably do it better in the process.

Isn't this the most retarded stance on the books at this point?

Jordan's death was quite possibly the smoothest transition humanly possible. He knew he was dieing and had X months to live. He wrote enough notes that they damn near just finished the book with those, he picked his successor, etc. (note: wife actually chose but Jordan said 'I like this guy most' regarding Sanderson), and the final 3 books were met with near universal acclaim for being completed well and according to Jordan's style.

So what the fark twisted your panties about it? Have you even read them?

It's like 15-20 years old, imagine how over it he must be.

Also, Dany is such a terrible character. All the moral quandries she has to deal with are totally contrived and melodramatic. I hope she is murdered and her dragons are set free.

Robert Jordan dying saved the Wheel of Time.  It was really going nowhere and entire books were passing with virtually nothing happening.  Brandon Sanderson got the velocity back into the books and brought them home.  It was for the best.

It may have started that way for Dany, but in the fourth book she does absolutely nothing of importance.  She keeps making mistakes, which she doesn't really learn from, and then goes on to make more mistakes.  She doesn't take advice from her most trusted advisor, and starts to get paranoid about prophecies.  It becomes extremely frustrating throughout ADWD, and the prospect of yet ANOTHER book with her going around with the Dothraki sacking shiat that has nothing to do with going to the Wall and fighting the dead creatures that threaten to overtake the world is discouraging.

He might get The Winds of Winter out, eventually, but if he does it will be the last book in the series that he finishes.  I would bet a sizable amount of money on it, and I'm not even a gambler.

He already doesn't care.  He's been dragging his feet for years.  Once the show passes him up (which it will do next year), his output will slow to a (further) crawl.  Once the show finishes the story a couple of years after that, he will stop altogether.  He'll tell us we got the ending we've been bugging him about for the past twenty years, so get off his lawn and let him spend his retirement swimming in his vault of gold a la Scrooge McDuck.
