I'll admit I don't know the laws on this type of thing, but I think the boss should have worked a bit to make her firing not over a medical issue.

Firing people over medical issues tends to generate a nice settlement for the person fired.

Had a woman work with me that wanted to do something like this, show up late, if at all and leave early. Only reason she lasted as long as she did is her parents were friends with the operations manager.

Well, if she had cancer, Farkers would be on her side.  But, since it was a mental health issue, I'm guessing most here would just tell her "get over it" and have zero sympathy for her.  If the company has other employees working this alternate schedule at her former pay rate, she has a valid argument.

Sounds like my little sister. Her boss is an "evil biatch", her words, because she won't let her off an hour early everyday so she can pick up her son from daycare before 6. Her boss tried to compromise and have her come in at 7 instead of 8 so she could get off at 4, but that was unacceptable to my little sister. I asked her why does she think she can skip out everyday an hour early and not make up that time, and with a straight face she said that they should have to make an exception for her because she is a single mother.

I'm no expert, but if you don't show up and get the job done, you're fired, and I don't see why I should care what the reason was.

As an employer, this is how I operate.  My employees can set their own schedules, take breaks whenever they want, and basically do anything they want whenever they want.  So long as the job is done.  (and done correctly)  When they don't get the job done, they don't get paid.

Which is all perfectly legal because everyone that works for me is a contractor.

While the demoting her part is extremely questionable, I'm sorta leaning towards the employer side here. In a way I can empathize with the employer on this one. Where I work, we have this lady in our department who we had to accommodate her on the work schedule because of her young daughter. She said she can't work weekends because she can never find a babysitter, and we're kind of out in the country, so that's a partially believable story. But, lady never has to work weekends, and has what most people call a schedule to kill for, only works four days a week and is off by 5PM at the latest and still gets 40 hours.

She cries and moans that she never gets promoted when the opportunity comes up, but refuses to accept or understand that she'll never be made a supervisor since she refuses to work weekends. She even threatens to quit every single time that it's brought up that she might have to work weekends some day.

They did. She got a medical leave. When she came back, her schedule was changed to allow her to avoid rush hour. Her duties were also changed, and she objected to that. She was later fired.

You know who else gets stressed out and anxious during the typical New Jersey commute?

Everyone.

Here's a key to the front door.  Show up whenever you feel like....  as long as its before 9:00; leave when ever you want...   as long as its after 5:00.    I don't care what you do with that extra time, just lock up on your way out.

I'm generally too anxious to drive.  So, I take public transportation or, more often, my husband drops me off on his way in.  I've never had to ask a boss to accommodate my hang up.  Hopefully this woman can work out some sort of ride share arrangement in the future.

I'm with the employer on this one, but you make a good point.  I've been a manager.  I've hired and fired many people.  But like it or not, you need to tread very carefully with your reasons for firing a person.  Every state has different ways of looking at it- but the point stands... you have to be very careful in your final meeting with a person you're showing the door.

Fulton accommodated, but only temporarily, and also changed her position to a lower-level clerical one, says DeGerolamo. She filed a complaint in May 2013 and was fired the same month.

I don't have all that much sympathy, but if this is true, she could have a decent case. If her medical leave was documented and she was given a lower-paying position as a result, forget the whole "traffic" silliness that puts this story on the news and focus on that. Also, getting fired after filing a complaint sounds retaliatory.

Depends on the context. Most people get stressed about traffic, even though they could just middle lane it, put on an audio book, and just get there eventually. People get so wound up, it ruins their whole morning because "other drivers are stupid".
I suppose if that affects you super bad, i'd consider alternate hours. As long as you could produce commensurate with your pay at that position.
But this smells like there were other issues at work.

Most place, at least around here, have a nine hour day because you have an hour lunch that you are off the clock for. But yes she does have time to drop off her son if she started at 7, she says doing that would inconvenience her. Her main thing is that she wants our mother to take him to school and pick him up so she can hang out with her friends without having to be bothered with picking him up or waking up early to get him ready and take him to school, and she thinks that complaining about how evil and inflexible her boss is being will get that to happen.

Mental health accommodations are tough to get.

However, this woman apparently didn't have any actual issues, she just suddenly and for no reason became "anxious" driving in traffic. The manager tried to accommodate her, but it didn't work.

Accommodations don't have to be exactly what the employee wants, they have to be "reasonable" and if they're too burdensome to the employer, they are not required. If there's just no way to allow this woman to work on a schedule where she won't have to drive in traffic, then they can in fact fire her.

I hate this. I see so many stay at home Moms on social media who get their whole identity from motherhood while demanding recognition and acknowledgement from everyone for their choices. And sympathy. They want us to feel bad for them. They don't even see how lucky they are. Staying at home with a toddler is a privilege. I had the chance to do it for 6 months with my son and it was an incredibly rewarding experience to see him grow and bond with him. it was one of the high points of my life thus far. Some people work so much they miss out on seeing their kids grow up. Anyone who complains about staying at home with a child is incredibly ungrateful and no doubt a terrible parent. I feel bad for their kids. These people should be ridiculed to the fullest extent.

Her particular mental health issue is something everyone who works will suffer from. Since it'd be stupid to give everyone in society special treatment for it, it then just seems like we should treat it as something you're just required to do if you're going to work, especially when you decided to live so far away from home that it takes you ages to commute.
