Remember victory gardens? Grow food, people, it comes right out of the ground.

Related note: Wartime Farm is a fascinating documentary about the steps the British took to feed themselves during WWII.

Now they're running out of farmland? It's not like they make more of it. I'm surprised they haven't been at a agricultural deficit for decades.

I could go for some pasties right about now.

I am thinking the huge property bubble is turning farmland into row houses.

The U.K seems to have a large Male Irish population so I don't think they will be running out of spotted dick for a while.

I call shenanigans on subby.

Using modern hydroponic methods, deep fried Mars bars can be cultivated in abandoned Cheerio mines.

With a population expected to exceed 70 million by 2030

This is how I know this story is false. The neoliberal economists told me that never-ending population growth, even when you have to import immigrants because nobody who already lives there has the financial means to have children, automatically means never-ending economic growth

London is 40% parks. Most of London has building height limits.

They could easily fit that population growth into just London.

The UK has had to import alot of its food supplies for over a century, which is a large part why German U-boats in both world wars were such a peril.

Yep. No news here. They import food. In the future, they will import more. Duh.

Most of the 'great houses' (think Downton Abbey) were built with the profits on the attached agricultural land. Now most of the surviving estates are in the National Trust.

And there's an Asda down the road.

Please don't let that spoil your mom's vacation, though.

Let's post pictures of British chicks with good teeth.  Oh wait, those all had to be imported back in aught eight.

90% of British food is imported from Indian Balti quarries in any case.

Let's post pictures of American chicks with teeth so unnaturally white and symmetrical they look like they've had them all ripped out and they're wearing 1960s Bakelite dentures.

But I was told that improvements in agriculture would outpace population growth for, like, billions and billions of years.

They haven't been self-sufficient on food since the industrial revolution.  This just in: small, densely populated, and highly industrialized island nations (read: UK and Japan) need to import food.  Film at 11.

Yes, and worldwide, that's true. Enormous expanses of the United States that could be under till aren't, not because they're covered in tract houses, but because there isn't enough demand to justify using that much lower-yielding land.

Related note: Wartime Farm is a fascinating documentary about the steps the British took to feed themselves during WWII.

Nutrition and starvation studies done early in the war showed that the UK could feed itself even if Germany managed to impose a complete blockade. Everyone would be eating potatoes and milk but nobody would starve or die from malnutrition. With improved farming techniques I wonder how they would fair today.

In an emergency situation, the vast areas of National Park and uncommercialised rural land, plus a ban of fishing exports from their disproportionately large North and Atlantic rights, means they'd be fine with even double the population. Even semi-mountainous Scotland has huge areas that could be converted to farmland, they just never have been (beyond mild sheep grazing), because there was no need, because there were better areas.
