(BBC-US)   When one thinks of invasive species, one thinks of zebra mussels, kudzu... and of course the 60 hippos descended from Pablo Escobar's herd which roam the rivers of Colombia   (bbc.com) divider line 9

mcmnky: 1. Why wasn't this covered in the 30 for 30? What is ESPN covering up?

2. What to do with them? Duh, hippo steaks.

3. A hippo will F you up. No playing.

I'd think something the size of a hippo would be pretty close to the bottom on the list of invasive species that would be difficult to eradicate.

A few guys riding the rivers with a Barret 50 BMG could probably take care of things in a few months.

Harry Freakstorm: But the gorillas that eat them will freeze to death in the winter, right?  Oh, right.  Columbia.

Colombia.  And despite touching the Amazon and being in South America a large portion of Colombia gets cold because many of the cities are 4-6k feet above sea level.  Bogota can run between 40-50 degrees. 70 degrees there is considered summer weather.

The town my family is from, Manizales, is generally always freezing, foggy and rainy.  It even sits on a mountain with a glacier.

The problem in Colombian culture is that people do not think before they act and a lot of it has to do with a catlike curiosity coupled with no sense of self preservation.

A Colombian will go up and try to pet a rabid dog, even if the dog is snarling and foaming at the mouth.  And then after they get bit say "Why did that strange dog, who didn't know me, whos ears i decided to grab out of the blue, bite the hell out of me?"

I grew up in New Orleans, I hear a gunshot, I am going in the other direction, getting under something, etc.  In Colombia they run in the direction of the shot.

The hippos would be fine if people would stop trying to fark around with them.

Plus, the Colombian government could have taken care of this problem years ago when it was only a few hippos.  Not like they are hard to locate.

MFAWG: ZAZ: Sell safaris for hunters who don't want to go to Africa.

That's actually not the worst idea in the world. Of course real 'Merkans only 'hunt' big game that's caged up, but the idea is still sound.

The solution to all invasive species problems is to find a proper recipe.
