It's not so much the green skin that appealed to me so much as the color contrast I imagined between her skin and other body parts.

I didn't watch the video. Did they get naked?

That's what I think when I see people in to watching sports. Playing sports I get... Watching them I don't.

Different strokes for different folks.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Captain Kirk sets off my gaydar though, which Shatner never did.

Of all the various groups that make their own TOS episodes, this one I think does it best overall. Vic really nails the Shatner Kirk role, and in real life seems just as egomaniacal as The Shat.  Scotty's real son plays him here. The sets, lighting, even aspect ratio, all correct. the FX, spot-on. Scripts so far are of middle of the road quality compare to the best and worst original TOS scripts.  The mythbusters guy as sulu was stunt casting; he's the worst actor in the bunch. I hope that improves. Spock and McCoy need a little more work.   Overall though, quite watchable.

I thought the same thing when I first watched these new episodes, but I was surprised to find out he's in a relationship with Lt. Tits McGee on the left (which probably explains why they added the character):

I will have to give this a watch when I'm not at work, but I've met Vic at a couple of anime cons (he does a
lot of dubbing work), and he really seems to relish getting out and meeting fans.  Yes, he is a bit of a
self-promoter, but he seems to balance that out with being a sincere people person.  I've also heard him
interviews on the MISSION LOG Podcast about how he really identified with the role of Kirk and was a fan
long before he started acting, and he's approaching it from a place of sincere respect and love.

I knew that the STAR TREK CONTINUES crew had taken great pains to recreate the physical props and
sets, but from what little I've seen so far, they couldn't have gotten it better even if they had a blue
Police box.

I'm liking that these eps are coming out at a far more rapid pace than Phase 2's, but that's still the premier fan-made series for me.

Also, kinda surprised this made Fark when they just came out with a mirror universe episode a week or so ago which I thought was better (Mignona's evil Kirk is pretty badass).

2014-06-26 11:07:28 AM
Subby's an episode behind.  They just released a Mirror, Mirror sequel that's pretty good.

The production quality is amazingly accurate to the old stuff.  Wired's Youtube channel recently did a multi-part look behind the scenes and it's incredible the effort they put in to replicate the original sets, right down to the sound stage layout.

RockofAges: Why the hell did they decide to "redo" TOS and "ape" characters? This would have been a much better opportunity to write new characters on a new starship set in a contemporary time to TOS.

The idea is to finish the five-year mission that we only saw three years of.

I think Vic does a decent Kirk so far.  Although I often have difficulty not hearing Edward Elric when he talks.

/Star Trek: New Voyages was a decent fan production, but they lost me when they got all soap-opera about Kirk's gay son.

The production side just nails it. Sets, costumes, props, musical score, camerawork... an astonishingly good job and obvious labor of love.

Some of the actors do a great job. Some of them are just horrible, horrible, horrible.

The first episode's storyline was quite good. The second episode, not so much.

Thankfully they chilled out on that (though they still referenced it when Capt Kirk had Peter use some of the "Kirk charm" to get info from some Klingon bar urchins while on mission on Kronos).

BTW that's actually his nephew.

RockofAges: Really well made, one major, major quibble.

Why the hell did they decide to "redo" TOS and "ape" characters? This would have been a much better opportunity to write new characters on a new starship set in a contemporary time to TOS.

I have zero interest in watching these episodes despite the fact that I appreciate the work and effort and love everything about production.

If they had gone with original characters I think this series honestly could have gone somewhere. As it is, this is "cool" but I'm not aboard.

I'm probably the worst purist out there, but this is just, in essence, re-casting the parts - something we've all seen time and again.  I feel this series does a much better job at being true to the original characters than NuTrek has done, and much better written to boot.  I'd much rather support this venture than what's coming out by Paramount.

Considering it's intention is to follow up Season 3 of TOS, I'd say it's doing pretty well.  I'm sure we'll get the same distribution of some good, a few great, and some bad to terrible.

While I think that Imahara is bad stunt casting and doesn't work that well, I love the guest star stunt casting.  Getting the original Apollo to reprise his role was great, and what's not to love about Lou Ferrigno playing a large green guy.

Crotchrocket Slim: Thankfully they chilled out on that (though they still referenced it when Capt Kirk had Peter use some of the "Kirk charm" to get info from some Klingon bar urchins while on mission on Kronos).

That's good to know.  Maybe I'll try the most recent episodes then.  I did enjoy the first few and how they've managed to rescue some unfilmed scripts and seemed to get a lot of support from TOS cast and crew.

It would be great if New Voyages and Continues could pool resources so we could feasibly get Seasons 4 and 5 before the actual 23rd century arrives.

I thought Imahara was weak but serviceable, he had some of the speech patterns down enough that i mentally complimented him a time or two.  I had a big problem with Bones, he was just all kinds of wrong for me.  Everything else was wonderful.  My wife and i just watched the first episode since this thread opened and she said "I could get into this!"  Then again, last night she texted me that she was going to take off her pants and watch Search for Spock if I was going to be working, so YMMV.

And Crotchrocket:  It's Qo'nos.  After I started playing STO I get nutty about finally learning how everything is spelled.

Agreed....and I really *like* New Voyages and Continues.  When I saw a shot of Vic as Kirk I thought he'd be great, until I heard him speak.  His voice is kinda thin.  But overall I'm enjoying both series.

Anywho if you think about it, pretty much all those actors in TOS were heavy smokers.  Raspy voices are really noticeable watching old shows like Gunsmoke.

But I think both series are great homages to the original.  Major props to their tenacity and attention to detail.

SquiggsIN: farking Janeway crazy eyes

It's that bloody nyah-nyah-nyah voice of hers that drills into my spine and seeks out my nervous system.

But I still loved when the lawnmower stud gave her the high hard one in Throw Momma From The Train.  All the "woof woof woof" stuff was a scream.

"She was kind of a tart, Larry"

Not surprising. After all, he is probably best known as the voice of a diminutive teenage anime alchemist.

true that. I just finished the first one, and it's really grown on me (although I liked the 2nd one better). I think I can get around the voice, and having Marina Sirtis contributing helps it out too. I'd like to see it more often. Heaven forbid it would get picked up by a network. I think it would be a surprise hit.

The only reason these productions are allowed to happen at all is that they're not for profit. So we'll never see it picked up and properly funded. If a network did take a shot like this, they'd probably focus on making it mass-appeal (like nu-trek) instead of keeping it the homage to the original that it is.

Yeah, you're probably spot on with this....the network brass would fark it all up with their "input".

I am very impressed by their sets.   Damned near as good as the original.

Will watch the rest of it later, as someone said above: some decent acting, mixed in with some very poor performances.  But hey, it's really not much more than the local community playhouse's summer stock so you kind of have to go with what you can get.
