(WPRI Rhode Island)   Because Rhode Island doesn't have enough of a reputation for corruption, a convicted felon is now running for mayor of Providence. And will probably win   (wpri.com) divider line 29

Buddy is God.
That is all.

Never mind that (a) the race is small-time in comparison to a governorship year, which the current mayor is running for, and (b) he was always actually good for the city, despite the corruption.  That, and I'm pretty sure anyone who's ever lived or dined in that city has at least one pic of him somewhere, possibly even with him posing with them

\Almost got two pics, but I was on the wrong side of the table the second chance I had

\\First was him with the band at the 1995 PC-BC basketball game

Oh please say Buddy Cianci, please say Buddy Cianci.

*clicks link*

YEAH!  Buddy Cianci.  The guy who once assaulted a contractor with a lit cigarette, ashtray and fireplace log.  I was going to school in Providence when he resigned from office.  Good to see the old guard coming back to the city of Providence.  It's like things haven't changed at all over the past three decades.

I'm seriously trying to think of another sitting mayor who's ever had an actual speaking role on a TV show.  Blanking.

\the speech was pretty damned close to the annual graduation speech he gave at PC commencements, as I remember
\\and yes, it was the same damned speech every year, because Buddy.

Eh, so what.  The US has the most draconian criminal justice system in the world.  Who isn't a felon?

Well to be fair he did make Providence sort of nice again while he was mayor.

Ah, the Prince of Providence, I knew he would run again sooner or later. I haven't lived there in a few years, but when he got out of jail and had his radio show, it was very farcical. I felt bad for the current mayor at the time, as Cianci would trash his every move, every day. It was nearly impossible to get anything done. I love his passion for the city - I doubt there are many people who care more for that town than he does - but I feel like he is a bit of a dinosaur. The city has changed a lot since he was mayor and I'm not sure going back to his style of politics and governing is the best idea, even if it is a cleaned up, non-racketeering version of Cianci. But you can't argue that, for better or worse, modern Providence is a cleaner, more beautiful city because of him.

I miss strolling through downtown with a glass of wine and a cup of chowder enjoying the Waterfire. I've never felt a part of a city in the way it did during those summer nights. Magic.

Also, wasn't it Reagan who initially looked at Cianci as a possible running mate before they sniffed wind of scandal and ran in another direction? It might have been Bush, Sr.

No one.  You commit three felonies a day.

I have a theory: everyone in Rhode Island has met Buddy Cianci at least once.

Close to twenty years ago I was at a big art show in Providence with my family. We ran into a friend, an artist who also worked in the city government. My daughters were six and four at the time and they got a little antsy, so while my wife stayed inside the four of us stepped out. A limousine pulled up, Buddy Cianci stepped out and went into the building to deliver a speech (big show!). My friend said, "When Mayor Cianci comes out I'll introduce you." Then he jokingly added, "But I have to warn you: he wears a lot of aftershave. He'll want to shake your hand and your hand will smell like his aftershave for a week." Sure enough Buddy Cianci came out, my friend introduced and I shook his hand. Then he turned to my girls and offered his hand. They backed away. He said, "I am the mayor of Providence. You have to shake my hand." So he shook their hands and they both immediately put hand to nose and said loudly, "You smell it?" "Yeah, it's strong." My friend turned white as a sheet but Buddy had stepped away to chat with someone and didn't notice the little exchange. Bet he never made that mistake again!

It's pretty much noted for corruption because of Buddy Cianci.

I stopped reading at the ridiculous summary of Diane Huang.

She was not in fact convicted of using clear plastic bags for shipping, which as implied your retarded link is a honduran law and the big meanie gubmint just wanted to throw her in prison for fun over nothing! Meanwhile, it says that "the  U.S. Lacey Act makes criminal an importer who violates "any foreign law"-regardless of whether you knew of the foreign regulations."

She was convicted of trafficking undersized lobster tails from Honduras. The packaging was abnormal for lobsters from Honduras because they were supposed to packaged in boxes after processing: the difference being it wasn't the container, it was the lack of processing. The Lacey Act is not about allowing the U.S. to enforce any foreign type nonsense laws that us Amuricans haven't heard of. It is about working with friendly countries on prohibiting trade on illegally harvested animals and plants. In other words, when the country of Honduras says X is off limits, you don't get to be an illegal importer of X and get away with it by living in the U.S. and pretending to keep your hands clean.

The people, including Huang, had smuggled well over 15 million dollars worth of illegally harvested goods from Honduras and were deliberately using ports that would be otherwise inconvenient if not for the fact that they were a better choice for a smuggler to use.

Now, all of that said, and feel free to google around a bit on your own, I don't know if you are a dishonest piece of human garbage who is spreading a lie, or an ignorant person who is so quick to scream "gubmint BAD!, me hate the piggies and the feds!" and repeat any crazy story you've heard.  Both seem bad, and you should probably work on some self-improvement.

Buddy's going to break out his good Toup for this race... The one made from genuine Sumatran Squirrel.

It really was inevitable... He may be corrupt as all fark, but he knows how to keep most of the people on his side.

If he wins, you know he's going to be watched like a hawk by the Feds.

Vhodeylan is full of assholes, but anyone that imports lobster to a New England coastal state ought to be hung.

You gotta be from New England.  No one outside New England even knows RI exists other than "it's the smallest state."  Here in New England, it's the redheaded stepchild of the region, and that's not being kind to redheaded stepchildren.
