In its worst drought ever, the state set no limits on car washing, sprinklers, or the building of backyard pools, nor did it ask frackers, power plants, or row-crop farmers to use less water and recycle.

That smacks of effort...let's just pray

That's stuff those liberals would want to do and if they want to do it, it must be wrong.

Mericiless attack on religion.

Anonymous guys mocking religion on line is the important issue, here...not powerful government officials who deal with  drought by holding prayer rallies.

They think there is a being "in the heavens" who, if you wish at it real hard, will make it rain. "Sky genie" seems as good an appellation as any for the god they believe exists.

This gets back to a deeper philosophical argument I've had of late that one person's god is not necessarily the same as another's, even though they both claim to believe in the same source material, since one person has the belief that "God is X" and the other "God is Y".  If you claim to be a Christian and don't believe that by praying really hard your god will make it rain, do you actually believe in the same deity these people do?

Yeah, that part they sort of gloss over.

If you prayed for rain and it didn't happen, what might be the cause? Did God not hear your prayers? Not possible; God hears all prayers. Is the drought is part of His plan? That can't be, because he wouldn't allow the Faithful to suffer so. The only option remaining is that God heard your prayer, and decided not to answer it.

Or - just maybe - He knew that droughts might be a problem, so He gave us all this fancy water reclamation and preservation equipment in order to mitigate the effects. Just a thought.

I think it's silly when people complain about water shortages and drought, then go and decide to lay blame on whoever.

2014-06-25 06:01:42 PM
Well they have their guns, so they can go hunting for water if the praying doesn't work. Until they make conservation of resources as high of a priority as guns, religion, and sticking it to the libs; this is what they get because this is what they have voted for.

You've obviously never been to the southwest portion of the United States.  Or Florida, for that matter.

/rains every day for ten months out of the year and still there's a drought... never could figure that one out.

God answers all prayers, but sometimes, the answer is "No".

you never hear people talk about diamond shortages, nope, those things are considered precious & rare and are expensive, elegant & a ladies best friend.

we take too much for granted, like water & we won't realize it until it's too late.

so rather than say water shortages, why don't we just start telling people how rare water is and increase the price to match demand for other rarities.

It's not about what God wants, it's about what you're praying for.  Like if you're praying for rain, God can't just make it snow because he wants to.  This isn't a deli where you just get to substitute things all willy-nilly.  shiat would get all crazy then.

But they're not completely crazy. On at least two different occasions, groups have studied how feasible it would be to divert Great Lakes water to other reasons. While both studies (one conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers) concluded that it wasn't economically feasible, the mere that the studies were even conducted was enough to spook a lot of people.

This is an amazing article, and well worth reading from end to end.
Now, while it's true that there isn't a statewide ban or restriction on water use, in my city there is a VERY strict set of watering restrictions. I can water my lawn twice a month. Tops.

For the St. Augustine that carpets most lawns in Dallas suburbs, that's a death sentence. My plan is to strip all the grass off the front lawn and plant native prairie grass and succulents. And rocks. My neighbor has already done this. We just need to get used to the idea that the drought isn't a drought anymore, it's just "the weather."

I will miss long showers though.

2014-06-25 06:14:17 PM
so basically the long and short from that article is that at the rate they are going, texas will be effectively without surface water in my lifetime, and are likely to have depleted most of their aquifers to the point where they will have trouble providing drinking water to their citizens, let alone fuel industry or farming. and their answer is to let the developers get rich now and then get out before the crash. lovely.

is it too late to just let the south secede again?

Yeah, it's pretty spot on, except for the last part. There's no mention of who they'll vote for in the future. But they all pretty much agree Perry is an asshole.

And he really is. Perry is a huge asshole. I'd really like to spit on him.

Have to consider all interest.  Sometimes no party represents you and you have to make your own point.  Democrats are definatly not the rancher's friends.  Republican sometimes can be but are oftentimes not.

When you have to choose, most will go with the 'sometimes'.

Why not all three?  They are not mutually exclusive.   Price does usually spike when there is a shortage.  Kind of a supply v. demand thing.
