Not a causation, but probably a correlation between overprotective parents and a lack of physical activity due to fear of danger

Dear god, stupid people:

not everything is about "trying to dodge responsibility"

Sometimes, and this is crazy, I know, we like to actually understand what changed in society to allow for the changes we see in individuals.  Tools to help us shape future policy.  It's not "common sense" because it's actually trying to understand aggregate problems rather than engage in reductionist dismissals.

ArkAngel: Not a causation, but probably a correlation between overprotective parents and a lack of physical activity due to fear of danger

Actually, that's a pretty clear direct causation.  Crappy parents 'protecting' their little snowflake legitimately leads to lack of physical activity.

Not saying that's the ONE and ONLY cause, but it is A cause.  Kids, much like adults, can be lazy.  You've gotta direct their energy into activity, or they'll play vidya games all day.  I tried, and that was back in the 2600 days.

/mom kicked my ass out the door daily

Overprotective mothers == "Stay inside and be safe" and "No you can't play that sport, you might get hurt" instead of "Go outside and ride bikes and play!!!!" from my wife and I.

//Proud dad of two skinny boys.

ArkAngel: Not a causation, but probably a correlation between overprotective parents and a lack of physical activity due to fear of danger

True, although as a child of an overprotective mom I can definitely imagine:

"No you may not go out and play where a pedophile might grab you.  You want to give your poor mother who loves you so much a heart attack if something happened to you?  Now go upstairs and internalize your feelings.  There's ice cream in the freezer."

Its not always how much you eat, but what you eat. Just like I could put 8 gallons of fuel in my car and cause it to have problems if I put 8 gallons of diesel or jet fuel.

Its why calorie counting only tells one side of a story.

Kids, unlike adults, are not 100% responsible for their actions, subby. An 8-year old child, whose mother encourages it to eat lots of donuts because it wants them, and not to go outside because it might get hurt, is not responsible for getting fat in the same way you or I would be responsible for getting fat. We know better and are able to modify our actions. The child doesn't know any better, and is dependent on the mother to provide more nourishing low-calorie food and encourage it to go outside now and then.

I hope this clarifies matters for you.

Hmm.. Would be interesting to see results of like 3 kid families.

The usual is:
First kid: over protective. Clueless parents doing their best to keep kid safe. Ends Up Economics Major or something.
Second: parents getting the hang of it. Some what moderate.
Third kid: ok these rats are anything but fragile. Go mountain biking and play tackle football in the middle if the street. Good luck with your music major.

Maybe, just maybe, it's not just one thing, but a combination of things that are making kids fat.

But yes, no outside play is contributing in some cases.

Isn't that true for everything physically? Look at body builders from back then they look small and soft in comparison. The average NFL football team weight is like 100 lbs higher.

This.

I'm not sure how guaranteeing your child needs a triple bypass at age seven can be construed as being over protective. It's negligent. Parents can go for bike rides and kick a ball around WITH their kids.

I would never dream of picking on an overweight person. My sister was growing up and I saw how badly she was hurt on a daily basis by mean kids. She actually has a thyroid issue and lost 60 lbs without even trying once she got on meds in her 20s. Fact remains, a lot of kids have really unhealthy habits nowadays and it is sad if they face a host of health issues that could be prevented.
