I knew of a female coworker with the last name of Ure (and first named started with an M).  I read the headline and wondered, "how did she become famous/a celebrity?"  Then I looked closer at the first name..."oh, never mind".

Love Midge Ure... Visage, Ultravox, solo work. He's got some great songs. Not sure I'd want to see a show, but I play his CDs all the time. Yes, CDs. I'm old.

A Vienna-esque solo song:

There was a show several years ago called "Hit me Baby One More Time".  It brought back 3 musical acts from the 80s.  They did a biography moment on each.  They played one of their greatest hits and then covered a contemporary song of their choosing.  Audience voted for a winner.

Howard Jones was fantastic.  He wasn't there to impress anyone and just sat down and played beautifully.  I can't remember what he covered but it matched his style.  He didn't win (some group that had replaced their lead with a newer, hotter, younger model did).

I'd see this concert. This appeals to me... Though when subby says "Thompson Twins" they really just mean Tom. The group most people know (Tom, Allanah, and Joe) ended in the 80s when Joe left. Tom and Allanah were married and worked as Babble for a while after quitting the Thompson Twins name, but they divorced and Allanah took off. Arguably, Tom IS the Thompson Twins-- he was the primary vocalist, songwriter, and musician and it was very much his project-- but that sound just won't be the same without Joe and Allanah.

(And if he ever got the large group he had for  Set back together, I'd be stunned.)

Anyway, I just started re-watching  Max Headroom, and the original British film/pilot has a soundtrack by Midge Ure. His style was always unmistakable. I also have an old VHS copy of  Rock School (a fondly-remembered birthday present from my days when I was still pursuing music as a teenager) and it has a lovely lesson from Midge Ure on the proper use of the microphone for vocalists.

So I guess my point was that I'm getting old and I miss the farking 1980s, dammit.

I saw his first-ever appearance on American television (Alan Thicke's old  Thicke of the Night  talkshow) and it was brilliant. He had my attention from the first few notes. It was a little weird that he brought his mime friend along for those first appearances, but the music was always superb.

I'm sure it was lip-syncing, but it was the first time this American 80s teenager had been able to hear his sound, and I dug it.

LewDux: Better than Foxx

Something something whore mouth.

I saw Ure and Ultravox a couple of times, the first appearing very nervous at a bar called The Edge in Toronto, circa 1980. Foxx had booked and Ure was brought in and made them as big as they ever got. I recall in a subsequent show they covered Eno's "King's Lead Hat" with two basses. Good times. Also, "Systems of Romance" is still a hell of an album...pre-Midge.

Ultravox is greatly underrated.  Besides "Vienna"', put on "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" & "Reap The Wild Wind", at least in video form.

Also: his solo tune "If I Was" should be worth a look.
