Huppenthal, writing under the pseudonym Falcon9, said that America only has room for English.
"We all need to stomp out balkanization. No spanish radio stations, no spanish billboards, no spanish tv stations, no spanish newspapers," he wrote roughly a month after he was elected. "This is America, speak English."

In another post, Huppenthal simply wrote, "MAS=KKK."

I see this as the idiots' way of dealing with a problem,  à la declaring video games to be the problem with violent kids.  Univisión and the other foreign language stations out there are not the problem.  The actual problem is that there are a lot of highly visible, very vocal minorities who aren't doing what the vast majority of their predecessors did, which is assimilating.  Why that is I don't care to know or want to explain, but it's the truth.  Most people who came to America in the early 20th century either learned English so they wouldn't get passed over for better jobs, or they pretended they didn't know it because they didn't want to be hassled and had friends/family that would help them so they wouldn't have to speak it.  Now, it just feels like they just don't want to bother learning English because they can get all their freebies without learning it.

\At least with the HIspanic ones around me, anyway.

Lots of people who speak French and German in this nation, still. I hear a lot of Hindi at grocery stores and work. I think it is a matter of perception and fear of change.

That's the part I don't get.  Whatever their perception of speaking English is and its pratfalls and taboos, the opposite side is they're viewed as dumb even if they have a 140 IQ because of the language barrier.  Just seems like a bad idea is all.

Lots of immigrants continue to speak their native language whenever it's convenient, simply because they're more experienced in it than in English.  As I understand it, the typical pattern is that the immigrant's kids tend to be fluent in both languages, since they hear their parents' language at home and English at school, while their grandkids and subsequent generations are far less likely to be fluent in anything other than English (and whatever second language they're required to learn in school).

CSB: I have a coworker whose grandparents came from Japan, and while he mostly looks the part, he's barely able to speak Japanese.  By contrast, his tall blond girlfriend is fluent enough in Japanese that she could probably work as a professional translator.  Apparently that led to some rather funny moments when the two of them went on a trip to Japan.

False assumption is that immigrants, in the past, quickly assimilated.  Heck, we had public schools teaching in German until the 20th century in our area (and several others), at least until the Kaiser stole our word 'Dickety.'

You can usually expect it to take until at least the 2nd generation for assimilation, but it really depends on the community.  For instance, in our nearest town of 80,000, a fair number of Somali immigrants have come in the past few years.  However, its such a small community, I'd expect them to assimilate reasonably quickly, both because of community resources/outreach for each immigrant, but also there isn't enough of them to insulate themselves from the larger community (i.e. their kids will be taught English in school, and if they open a store or work any job, they'll be expected to learn English).

What do they broadcast, aside from a still of Lou Dobbs angrily pointing at the camera?

That said, Telemundo and Univision have the market cornered on weather broadcast. Their meteorologist all look so smart.

And I love the fact that English broadcast stations offer SAP in Spanish for sports events.

But I have to try and translate Univision during FIFA.

First of all, all of the announcers talk at once. They sound like 70cc dirt bikes with stuck throttles. The only thing that really stuck in my mind was "chico malo" and, after an extended bout of shots on goal, "aye mamita querida!"

If immigrants don't assimilate they will end up like those shiftless, amoral Amish. We can't let that happen.
