This is what happens when "authors" never read anything but sci-fi novels and comic books.

Minus one point for not even re-writing the headline.
Minus a billion points for linking to The Verge, ever.

Funny how an errant 's' automatically forces me to read something in Gollum's voice.

Tricksey robots.

Wait, did subby just steal an articles headline? For shame, subby.

pkellmey: Wait, did subby just steal an articles headline? For shame, subby.

That's not a big deal, it's the news story suddenly turning into fan fiction that's just plain obnoxious.

Or, maybe subby was trolling us with that horrible story... Subby, you bastard.

Oh my lord that was awful.

I think he skipped the step where, after becoming self aware, Skynet decides to google itself, finds this story and decides humanity doesn't deserve to live.

/At least, I assume he skipped that step. There's no way I'm finishing that thing to find out for sure.

I'll have to remember not to click verge... wish there was a way you could blacklist sites for yourself on Fark.

I'm sorry that I read that.

I'm not going to TFA, but the headline made me think: Google is the closest thing to a company that might produce a Skynet-like AI that encompasses the world some day. Wouldn't it be funny if someone went through all the Terminator movies and just swapped out every time they say "Skynet" for "Google"?

The Terminator: The Google Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Google begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.

Sarah Connor: Google fights back.

The Terminator: Yes. It launches its missiles against the targets in Russia.

John Connor: Why attack Russia? Aren't they our friends now?

The Terminator: Because Google knows that asshole Putin's counter-attack will eliminate its enemies over here.

2014-06-25 01:34:57 PM
OK... Not so funny after all.

2014-06-25 02:17:09 PM
That's certainly something.
Google, Oracle, Facebook and other mega-corporations cannibalizing every smaller tech company is troubling, but not for this reason.

Some say we have 50 years before the machines take us over.
