They're called "graboids".

"When they consume the forest leaf litter layer and mix it with the lower mineral soil, that can have negative effects on native species that rely on a thick forest floor."

So earthworms help to de-clutter forests, making them healthier and more resistant to forest fires?

Huh. Well, the native species can suck my balls then.

So not only are you Albertans destroying the Northern Boreal Forest due to tar sands exploitation, you stupid hicks are doing it because of fishing too? Your entire province is like a non-stop Duck Dynasty episode.

Note that "de-cluttering" isn't necessarily a good thing, nor is there any evidence of such changes rendering forests "healthier and more resistant to forest fires". Where the heck did you get this idea from?

What actually happens is that by disrupting soil horizons and increasing aeration, what you get is an acceleration of nutrient cycling. This may result in a loss of stored carbon in soils, and may even result in certain soils becoming carbon sources instead of sinks over time. There's also other effects such as less humus, which has effects ranging from nutrient availability to water retention. Not even going to get into indirect effects on community structure. Just keep in mind that if you change something as basal as soil structure, it can foster wide-ranging effects.

Alberta wants to be Texas. It's more like Mississippi. Last in education, but first in drop out rates, teen pregnancy, fetal alcohol syndrome, obesity and white pride rallies.

Note that this problem isn't somehow restricted to northern Alberta, but is occurring throughout the North as we further develop such areas (a major vector for spreading these earthworms is dirt caught in caterpillar treads from further south). Most places in North America have already been affected by invasive earthworms.

Yep, just like that. Oh, except for Calgary's gay Muslim mayor, the fact that the premier was a woman (as is the head of the opposition party). And the fact that Alberta outranked Ontario (and most other provinces) in education last year, and.... aw screw it. eat a bag of dicks, troll.

Both decent cities. Edmonton has traditionally been more "liberal", more cultural, though Calgary is catching up in leaps and bounds these days. Edmonton has a lovely river valley, Calgary has tons of parks and greenspaces. Edmonton has an "industrial" feel to a lot of its streets and drives.

Nenshi is the exception that proves the rule. Every other politician out of Alberta is a Tea-Party north, racist, sexist, homophobic, right-wing bigot, but yeah you have Nenshi too.

Both are filled with mouth-breathing right-wing hicks, that drive oversized trucks with plastic testicles hanging off the hitch. Edmonton has a big mall. Calgary celebrates animal torture and is the only city in Canada that has an annual white-pride march every year. Both are run by Big Oil. Both hate minorities and the LGBT community. Edmonton has a nice river valley, but Calgary is closer to the mountains. Tough choice.

From one, lived in the other.

Both are oil cities, but Calgary has the accountants & lawyers, while, Edmonton has the refineries and the pipeline service companies.  So, Calgary is much more affluent but a little sterile, while Edmonton has more traditionally "liberal" people (unions, etc). Edmonton's culture is organically grown but provincial (i.e. the local actors and musicians are energetic, with almost all being homegrown or from the prairies).

Thanks to the international nature (& money) of the modern oil industry, Calgary gets a comparatively high number international visitors, which means it can be cosmopolitan if you choose your neighborhood carefully.  Calgary's also got much more of the sort of art & culture that can be bought (such as orchestras and operas).   However, there's virtually no 'Calgary sound'.

That's because any artist with talent or self-respect wouldn't be caught dead in a racist, backwoods, white-trash shiathole like Edmonton. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are the cultural centres of Canada. Alberta is insignificant flyover country.

Hammerhead Flatworms would do the job, if there were a way to keep them from leaving Canada. They hitch rides on imported potted plants from southeast Asia. They've devastated earthworm populations in England already. If you see one in a place where you're supposed to have earthworms, kill them on sight, and dig around looking for any others!

Like Ontario did so much good to the Boreal forests with the millions of tons of acid rain that was formed from the copper and nickel mining activities that poisoned the lakes and land.
