I was under the impression that the Nazis were pretty much always stylish.  They had a real thing for aesthetics.   What with the uniforms, regalia, and all that.

Doesn't mean they weren't monsters, just that they were *STYLISH* monsters.

Sounds a lot like Mars Hill Church.

Isn't that a great logo? No wonder they're so popular with the kids.

Maybe their just doing it to be ironic.

dittybopper: I was under the impression that the Nazis were pretty much always stylish.

I'm not sure that was so much "stylish" as it was "understanding that human beings respond predictably to structured, hierarchical ornamentation." See also any uniformed military, the Catholic church, BSA, etc etc etc.

Not to say that all those organizations are like Nazis, of course.

Yeah, but it was a bit more than that.  They put some real effort into how the uniforms looked, into their architecture, their symbols, and even arguably into how their weapons looked.

Yeah, because when I want to be an intimidating figure, I carry around a bag that says "Please don't shove me, I have a joghurt in my bag"

Aren't you supposed to terminate all of the enemy when you truly "win" a war?
If you don't, then you're just jerking off.
It's like pulling weeds in your yard. You have to pull them all and take their roots, too.
And If you see where one has sprouted from an errant seed, you must kill that one, too.

Now we have in the USA an American Nazi Party.
Brilliant. If that isn't trolling, I don't know what is.

Look, a lot of people are closer to fascist belief systems than they want to admit.   Fascism, while lacking moral credibility, is a pretty easy pill to swallow for people who want to pretend they're pragmatists.  And politicians are excellent at faking moral credibility for things.

I have to agree with this. To me, Nazi uniforms look so intimidating. Doesn't mean I'm going to go out and buy one, but mostly because they don't come in quadruple extra fat.

And a dive siren on their favorite bomber just for the extra terror factor. Very image conscious.

NOT going to read three pages of "This attention whore Nazi is a Nazi attention whore".

I do wonder, though, if this is a diseased variant on the Evil is Cool thing.  Less pathological people know that Darth Vader is cooler than Luke, that Cobra is cooler than GIJoe, and that Doctor Doom is cooler than Reed Richards, and so we buy t-shirts with the Cobra logo (I wear a Doctor Doom necktie when I give my students final exams, and I'm looking for a good Dalek tie), but we do not take it into the real world.  Take the Nazis' esthetic that has been mentioned in the thread (and I agree, those Solingen knives are awesome-looking), and add one attention-whore with a bit of psychopathy, and you get Nazi hipsters

From an old Suck.com essay: "The only difference between fashion and facism is more emphasis on uniforms than bullets."  Which explains Hugo Boss.

Hannah Arendt has argued that a similar thing occurred when the Nazis came to power. Even when people realized Nazis were moustache-twirlingly evil, they still accepted it because it was a really admirable kind of evil. People love competent villains.

Hitler was a bit of an artist and Albert Speer who played a major role and was about as much of a friend to Hitler as anyone was an architect. A lot of the imagery came from Speer.

He was the one who created the iconic "cathedral of light" for a rally: www.imd.tu-bs.de

Well, some of that could well have been "I can't do anything about it now, or I'll end up in a Gestapo prison.  Or worse.".

Another part of it could have simply been that people don't like to admit that they farked up, and that the organization they've supported could be that bad, because that makes *THEM* that bad, at least by proxy, and most people don't consider themselves to be evil.
