Man On A Mission: People still watch American Idol?

Really?

Some do, but I can't for the life of me figure out why.

In 2011, my family and I took a flight from Chicago to Las Vegas. Crystal Bowersox, the 2nd place contestant from the previous season, was on our flight.

She was sitting in first class and I walked past her while taking my 8 month old son to the restroom. On the way back, she commented how cute he was, so I threw him on her lap and took a picture while he was bashing his fists into her keyboard laptop.

I've never heard of her since. Too bad. It would make that picture much more relevant.

At some point everyone who actually wants to will have appeared on one of these shows. And we're long past the point where anyone with any actual talent or skill is one of the contestants.

I don't know how anyone has a chance at "industry success," but I sure do hate the trend this show started where everyone has to WHOA OH WHOA OH and hold the note at the end of every phrase

There's that Daughtry dude, and I remember a lot of nonsense about something called a "Sanjaya"?

Daughtry didn't win. It's a damn good thing Sanjaya didn't win. What America was thinking when Taylor Hicks won, I'll never know.

I stopped when Simon left.

Do any of the current judges tell singers when they stink it up?

(Not during auditions, I mean in the last 10 or 8, when criticizing a contestant might mean the judges were wrong for bring the person that far.)

Harry Connick Jr is Simon lite. Keith Urban offers some good advice. J Lo. Depends on the night. Hell, they're all better than Nicky Minaj

I've never seen an episode of it in my life but what has changed that people who watched it before wouldn't watch it now?

Hear that J Lo you miserable, spicy, cheesy coont. Your relevance is plummeting.

Go back to your block since you're so real

I worked in a place for a few months where we had to listen to music so inoffensive I know who winners Kris Allen and Jordin Sparks are.

I also lived in Greensboro, NC for a year & used to laugh at the "Home of Idol Winner Fantasia Burrino" on the way into High Point.

So those are my 3 other than the obvious ones.

I can actually shed light on this. My fiance used to love the show. Watched every single season. She stopped about 2 years ago when it became more about the drama between the judges than it being an actual singing competition. I think it was when they brought Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey on and all they did was fight each other and act like total coonts. I was fine with her quitting as it was just background noise while I played video games.

Really the judges are what makes or breaks a show since they are the ones with the most air time. America's Got Talent has great chemistry between the judges. The Voice ratings plummeted when they brought back Cee-Lo Green and Christina Aguilera and went right back up when they re-replaced them with Usher and Shakira.

I can understand that. The ONLY reality/talent show I ever watched was Face Off, which was about movie make-up artists competing for making up make-up stuff. Because I'm into movie making and the contestants were actually talented at something and there wasn't any of that manufactured drama shiat. After a few episodes some studio suit must have gotten a hold of it and they brought in the manufactured drama and I tuned out. So while I don't watch karaoke shows, I get what you're saying.

Also didn't the audience like the British asshole who would berate everyone? I remember people at the office going on about how the best part of the season were the really bad people at the beginning and the British prick would put them down, to everyone's delight. And based on the commercials they were obviously all fake.

"Reality" TV. It's the universe balancing itself for all the actual good TV we get on cable.

AGT is somewhat regrettably a guilty pleasure. a magician friend of mine made it a decent way into the show a few years back (Spencer Horsman). Been watching since Piers Morgan's last season (thank fark) and have this current season DVR'ing so I can skip through teh bullshiat

It's shlock TV for the most part, but there are some really cool people doing some really cool things, and the judges are tolerable

The only reason people watched was because of the Simon/Paula dynamic.

count me in for a fan of AGT.  I like it due to the varied acts, it's not all just signing, and some really cool acts make it.   Also the judges do well, glad they got rid of rubber stamp Sharon Osborne.   Stern gives good honest critical advice and he realizes the winner has to be able to do an act in Vegas.  So kids may be cute, but he knows they aren't right for the ultimate prize.

My favorite acts are the stand ups when they have to do their act without the crowd during the semis....talk about tough.

The signing contest shows have gotten old, and you don't really need to win to "win".  Just stay on a few weeks for exposure and you are good, like daughtrey

That's true, isn't it? I've never watched any of these shows, but they do get a lot of training and singing practice, don't they? So it's worth it to be on even if you don't get very far. Plus exposure to being on stage and singing in front of an audience and everything like that.

There was that gay kid--Adam Lambert. I don't know if he won, doubt it. I think he's still around. Huh--actually he's touring with two members of Queen right now, taking Freddie Mercury's place. So I guess he's doing all right.

Exactly.  And I'm not even sure why I can name Clarkson - it certainly isn't because I'm enraptured with her music.

This show (and its clones) is one of the worst things to happen to the music industry over the last 15 years, and I say that without a hint of exaggeration or melodrama.  As someone who loves music of all kinds, it makes me sick to my stomach that this excrement has been so popular that it's (mis)informed whole generations of people about music in all the wrong ways.  fark everyone who was involved with bringing this shiat to the public - fark them hard.

I'll second that. Every word. If it were a just and fair world, the producers of American Idol would be in a Mexican prison.
