Heh, good for him. The Mel Gibson thing was blown way out of proportion.

2014-06-24 08:30:44 AM
Send him back to Azkaban.

2014-06-24 08:34:00 AM
Well done with that headline, submitter.

2014-06-24 08:35:47 AM
So when can I expect his movie with a beaver puppet?

2014-06-24 08:55:32 AM
Nice headline :)

Another of those cases where you kinda know what the person wants to say but it comes out all wrong.

Putting the libertarian bit right after bigot was hilarious editing.

"[Gibson] got drunk and said a few things, but we've all said those things."

No, Mr. Oldman, no we haven't.

Gary Oldman still instantly makes any movie better, but this is a bit disappointing.

It wasn't an isolated incident.  The guy had a very long term, very public meltdown of which yelling racist crap at a cop was only the tip of the iceberg.

That said- whatever. Move on.  He was funny in "Machette Kills."

Yeah but it shouldn't have been the career killer it ended up being.

This. Not everyone who hits their thumb with a metaphorical hammer knee-jerks to "I BET THE JEWS DID THIS."

/Will still check out the new Apes movie.

2014-06-24 09:11:07 AM
That's too bad.  My opinion of him, as a person at least, just plummeted.  Defending racists and racism by saying we all call out the dirty Jews and throw around the word n@@@@r and we just don't admit it?

No, Mr. Oldman, no we all do not.  Only racists do that.

And who the hell uses the word kraut?  Seriously?  He thinks people use anti-German slurs?  He's living in a very different world than the public.  A weird, racist world that never left the 50s.

Actually, I was just mocking the commercials with Oldman shilling for Samsung.

But, why are you so thin-skinned for a celebrity? Is it because he says something you agree with, and therefore his lack of knowledge on the subject outside of his little bubble is irrelevant?

I always was disappointed that Mel's personal scandals completely distracted people from what a great movie Apocalypto was.

Today I learned... "Jew" is apparently a swear word/slur that must be filtered in an article as "J--"

I think Mel was in the throes of some serious mental/emotional issues for a while there. I think we can be too judgmental about people at times, and have to understand that sometimes, even decent people end up doing something awful from time to time or some people end up in a dark place for a while and don't have TMZ airing a clip of you at your worst. I think people need to lighten up about Mel Gibson.

2014-06-24 09:19:10 AM
Wow, he's right but that came across horribly.

I thought Mel should get a pass either way.  The 'sugar tits' and Melibu lines are hilarious, and I pissed my pants laughing the first time I heard those tapes of him screaming at his wife.

I love that bigots always assume everyone else is as bigoted as they are, but just hiding it. No, dude. No.

You mean Mel's tribute film to Italian jungle cannibal movies? Seriously, that film owes more to Cannibal Holocaust than anything else.

Alcohol is a hell of a drug.

Next time, he should just drug and rape a 13-year-old girl. Hollywood forgives that easily enough.

i think his point is that we all say mean, offensive things in anger.  demonizing someone like alec baldwin for calling someone a "homophobic slur" (whatever that means) is stupid considering how many people use words like that in anger and have been lucky enough not to get recorded.  it's hypocritical.  the worst thing that mel gibson did was drive drunk, but everyone forgets about that because he said some offensive things about jews and black people.  so driving drunk is apparently not as bad as being a bigot?  celebrities can commit all kinds of crimes and do terrible things and they don't get as much criticism as mel gibson did.  roman polanski raped someone and there are probably people in hollywood who defend polanski while hating on mel gibson.  judging a man's entire career by one drunken outburst is pretty stupid.

I think he was trying to get across the point that we all say hateful things when we're mad or under emotional distress.  I'm sure most people don't resort to racial slurs, but ugly words come out of people's mouths at times.  And we shouldn't always judge someone by what they say when in their worst moments.

Mel Gibson has suffered more backlash than Polanski.  Words can hurt, but forced sodomy hurts more.

Well, there is a difference. Turns out, when Jane Fonda objected to the Vietnam war, she was right. Maybe that's the part that stings the most.

Fatty Arbuckle raped a woman to death so neither Polanski nor Gibson should be held accountable.

political correctness: people protesting about using the word "chink" in the context "chink in the armour"
racism: using the word chink in the context "get me some more wontons, chink".

it really bugs me when people try to excuse racism by saying "it's political correctness gone mad!".

She did a little more than that but no need to threadjack over comparing apples and pineapple grenades.

Oldman's always been a bit of a crank but he's a formidable talent. He wrote and directed Nil by Mouth which was superb and brought Ray Winstone to the forefront so I give him a wide berth.

I think that when people feel especially hurt or angry, they sometimes grab the sharpest verbal knife in the drawer to lash out with, and sometimes that's a racial term. The idea that this "makes them racist" is preposterous and diminishes the toll real racism takes on people who are its object.

It's not a bad thing at all. I just remember how when Apocalypto was first released, Gibson went on a press tour emphasizing how much, uh, "historical research" he did for the film to make it sound respectable while in fact it was just a big-budget grindhouse exploitation flick.

I've noticed that nearly everybody who gets all bent out of shape over political correctness is a white guy. They're usually the same white guys who get mad that black people can say Ni*BONG* and they can't. Maybe there's an argument to be made that political correctness has gone overboard, but white guys are not the ones to make that argument.

Oldman will get several passes from me.

It's amazing that the same guy played Dracula, Commissioner Gordon, Drexl Spivey, Mason Verger, Sid Viscous, Sirious Black, Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg, and Lee Harvey Oswald, and played everyone of them so differently that he basically disappeared into the character.
