In America you can drink alcohol delivered to your room.  In Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, doctors drink alcohol in the deliver room.

The proper way to go on a good bender is to start off well stocked.

I had a buddy in college in the nineties who would get you beer, cigarettes and even cook you a frozen pizza for $5 or $10 late at night.  He made a fortune.

It seems to me that the delivery driver is going to get robbed quite a bit.

2014-06-24 10:31:07 AM
Now nobody has to drive buzzed to get more beer.

That was bad and you should feel bad.

Yes but is it shaken or stirred? This is important.

I could see delivering high quality booze in an emergency. A big tub of Osco brand Scotch Lite is another matter.

Yeah if you live in a state that doesn't suck.

/some pizza places would do this back in college, but people got arrested.

Bah, we've had beer taxis for years now. Call them and they'll deliver to your house. Having an app doesn't improve on the concept.

Or at least have difficulty actually getting paid.  They should make it call in at least so they don't take orders from people who are already hammered.

I'm not so worried about the customer. The app could require credit card number input in order to complete the sale. I was thinking about a guy or gal carrying a load of liquor and maybe some tip cash in an unfamiliar environment. Pizza delivery guys get their money stolen on occasion, the liquor would only make the robbery more appealing.

This is all well and good for Austin, but any plans of expansion will be met with all sorts of legal trouble.  BeerJobber and many others have attempted the alcohol delivery gig, but it is fraught with issues due to the bullshiat three tier system.  I wish this was something that could be expanded on, but alas I hold no hope.

Meh, its just beer - I can go pick up a 6 pack at a gas station no matter how drunk I am.   Call me when you can deliver me some Campari for when I need a late night Negroni.

2014-06-24 10:48:15 AM
Would this be covered by ay Dram laws?

2014-06-24 10:49:37 AM
That has always been an option in my neighborhood that I have resisted because if you're not able to walk a couple blocks to get some hooch you probably shouldn't be drinking in the first place.

Never go full Bukowski.

*at some point in the not too distant future*

(AP, formerly known as Associated Press, now just thrilled to be thought of as an early app mispelling)

The internet site known as Fark has reported ceased updating as postings became ever more erratic by even their incredibly loose standards.  There was initially some mention of "it's here, it's here", followed by ever-worsening typo until not even cat-like typing could be responsible for the emanations uttering from the ether.  The main page had long since gone silent until finally even the caturday page ceased activity.  There is speculation that there may be a tie-in with the rather alarming spike in alcohol-related deaths reported by the hundred of thousands across the country and around the world.  This is strongly fermented by the fact that many of the deceased had the same web page on their personal electronic devices when their remains were found.  Patterns of behavior observed by the deceased included near total isolation with frequent deliveries made to their doors.  It was often by the delivery driver that the finding of the moribund were made.

Meh. We had Dial-A-Bottle in college in the late 80s. They'd deliver to the dorms and take a note from Subby's mom for ID.

Meh, living here in civilization we can get food, booze, drugs, groceries, whatever delivered to our door and we manage to squeak by.

the thing that scares me is the following scenario.

Big Beer starts giving huge amounts of money to MADD on the condition that MADD comes out swinging against homebrewing and craftbrewing. Big Beer also contributes huge amounts of money to mega churches with the same conditions.

Frightening scenario.

Actually it's going the opposite direction, with Anheiser teaming up with craft brewers and producing their own.  Homebrewing doesn't even make a dent since you consider the cost to set up a home brewery in the first place not to mention the time.  Finally even Big Beer is not stupid enough to stick it's money dick into the crazy that is MADD.
If you're going to worry, worry about Big Beer spending on anti-marijuana groups.  That's where things could get entertaining in the adult beverage and consumption factory.

At $5 a trip and gas at $4 a gallon how is this going to make money?

Kinan: At $5 a trip and gas at $4 a gallon how is this going to make money?

Simply limit the round trip distance to some fraction of the distance you can go on a gallon of gas.

Say your car gets 20 MPG city.  If you limit deliveries to, say, a 2.5 mile radius, you can make the deliveries for a maximum of (($4/20miles)*5miles) = $1 in gas costs.  If you can combine several deliveries into a single run, you get even more savings.

The same way food delivery makes money - their delivery fee is not their only source of revenue.

If you're making profit on the alcohol itself, *AND* you're charging a delivery fee that is roughly the same of less than the cost of delivering said alcohol, then how won't they make a tidy profit?

I could work there because I have knowledge and experience with home brewing. 99.9% of home brewed beer is disgusting swill that some hipster concocted in a basement toilet, expects you to drink and then to tell him it's delicious so he'll feel like a contributing member of society.

2014-06-24 12:16:10 PM
Seems weird at first, but I can see it ensuring more people drink at home rather than go out, and alot less drunk drivers making beer runs. If it helps keep drunk drivers off the road even a little, it's worth it.

Interesting story...

I got a freelance gig once where I set up a shopping cart website, allowing people to buy wine online, and have it shipped to their house.
This all worked well, and the owner of the liquor store made a lot of money.  I did fairly well myself, for that matter.

But early on in the process, it occured to me that I was setting myself up for a potential liability.  What happens if some 14 year old buys the wine and something happens to him?  So I had the owner of the store put me on his payroll at $100 a month.  That was my "maintenance fee", as it were.  The idea being, if anything happens, I'm an actual employee of the store, and therefore not responsible personally.

Nothing bad happened, fortunately.  The point of the story is, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, it's a good idea to protect yourself.

You're welcome for the advice.

This story can't beat NH. It has giant liquor stores on both sides of the highway (93) for the brain dead who can't wait till they get home, or to the vacation site or their own funeral.

Louisiana has drive through Daquiri stands that give you giant styrofoam cups of booze to go on the road - they are closed containers because the paper is still on the straw.
