FTFA: "Most people think Islam is a religion, It's not. It's a totalitarian way of life with a religious component. But it's much larger. It's a geo-political system that has governmental, financial, military, legal and religious components. And it's a totalitarian system that encompasses every aspect of life and it should not be protected [under U.S. law]," he said.

O RLY?  In that case, hey, Baptist minister trying to grab a US Senate seat, I have some bad news for you about your club.

Er, I guess that should say US House seat.  Point stands.

That reminds me of some lawsuit out of somewhere years ago that tried to argue that because unitarian universalists welcomed all faiths, that IT wasn't itself a religion and not protected by first ammendment.

Freedom for me but not for thee!

I agree. Islam isn't a religion. No monotheistic practice is.

To have a proper religion you need a god of wine and a goddess of sex. Also, tri-annual orgies on the equinoxes and the winter solstice. Summer solstice is reserved for a family friendly BBQ.

Also there's chocolate. The good stuff, with at LEAST 90% cacao solids.

Of course Jesus is part of Islam; Christians just don't like it very much because he was relegated to second-string prophet.

But Ayn Rand-ism is a faith, and therefore can't be questioned.

"Although Islam has a religious component, it is much more than a simple religious ideology," he wrote. "It is a complete geo-political structure and, as such, does not deserve First Amendment protection."

Hey, moron...political speech is also protected by the First Amendment.

2014-06-24 09:17:22 AM
I have also been informed that Christianity is not a religion, but a relationship with Jesus Christ.

I must assume that Mr. Hice must also agree that Christianity is not protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

2014-06-24 09:17:33 AM
By that logic Catholicism isn't a religion, but that may be the guy's goal also. Ironically if he gets his Protestant America, it will also fall under the non-religion criteria.

Jody Hice, a Republican candidate for a U.S. House seat from Georgia

What if one was to say Jody is a girl's name.

That said, he should be ridiculed for being an ass.

"It is a complete geo-political structure and, as such, does not deserve First Amendment protection."

Why does that make it not worthy of First Amendment protection?  Are there any other geo-political structures that are not?

2014-06-24 09:21:02 AM
the first amendment only protects religions

He should stop now. Mormons believe the structure of their religion will one day be the political framework that survives the downfall of the US Government- rather the beginning of the end to the 2nd Coming. I don't see them as any better or worse than Islam.

Nailed it. His statement "It's a geo-political system that has governmental, financial, military, legal and religious components . . " could just as easily describe a political party.

Ambivalence: That reminds me of some lawsuit out of somewhere years ago that tried to argue that because unitarian universalists welcomed all faiths, that IT wasn't itself a religion and not protected by first ammendment.

Texas went after us for not being a real religion for having the audacity to have ministers that performed weddings for same-sex couples. You'd think a bunch of freedom-loving Texans and this guy would be skeptical of having the government in the business of deciding what's a real religion and what's not. But you'd be wrong.

2014-06-24 09:22:53 AM
If people like him are saying shiat like these just to get votes without believing them, I'd understand (not agree of course, but understand, after all vote whoring is nothing new). But if people like him really believe in things like that I don't know how to feel about them. I guess, the most obvious feeling would be pity.

Do do you even sleep with so much paranoia?

2014-06-24 09:23:34 AM

Relatively Obscure: Wasn't this argument pulled out of someone's ass a WHILE ago?

Yeah, this is a pretty old argument that American fundies pulled out to try to show why Islam was terrible and we had to go to war with the whole religion. But considering the reach of fundamentalist Christianity into American politics, their mangling of science discussions, and their everyday practices of indoctrination, it's clear that the difference between Christian fundamentalists and Islamic terrorists is one of degree and not type.

As a voter in Ga's 10th and the fact that I can see the steeple of this asshole's church out my office window I'm getting a kick...

 Not

This very same asshole got into a huge battle to have the 10 Commandments posted in a neighboring county's courthouse. One that he LOST that left the citizens of that county on the hook for about $150K...

The worst part of the deal is his opponent is only marginally better .

I know it's already been touched on, but to reiterate -

"Most people think Islam is a religion, It's not. It's a totalitarian way of life with a religious component. But it's much larger. It's a geo-political system that has governmental, financial, military, legal and religious components. And it's a totalitarian system that encompasses every aspect of life and it should not be protected [under U.S. law]," he said.

Which one of these components isn't addressed and protected on some level by US law?

We have freedom of speech and association, but the results are unconstitutional?

If there was some kind of generator we could hook up to Thomas Jefferson's corpse electricity would be two cents per kilowatt century.

The fact is though, there is no such thing as a second string prophet in Islam. Muhammad is the last, but everyone has to be treated equally. It's a deal breaker of Muslim faith otherwise.
