It was actually rather viable as a leveling process when Cataclysm was released.  I got to max level in cata on one toon solely collecting Archaeology stuff, and was half way through on the second doing herb/mining when I stopped playing.  I heard they nerfed the crap out of it though (it previously had been something like 1/500th of a level per node or something).

I suspect he got good at herb grinding while watching TV or some other activity as well.

WoW uses the same game model as Scientology. Invest loads of time and money in order to level up while cutting yourself off from outside influences.

Panderians do not choose a faction at character creation; they are a "neutral' faction. The ending of their origin storyline requires choosing to join the Alliance or the Horde.

That's what TFA is about, the panda-bears start out neutral until level 10, then you essentially do a quest turnin to decide which faction to ally with, and get tossed out into the big bad world.  The guy in TFA never turned the quest in and just leveled gathering herbs in the starter zone.

MoP was actually a decent xpac. Not BC or Wrath level quality, but decent and far better than that sorry mess they called Cataclysm. Not having to grind raid gear on every character just to be able to join up for raids you already had access to on other toons was a nice touch.

Too bad nobody plays anymore. It was unusual when I went back to see more than 1 page of level 90 weapons on the AH, for example, and it was pretty standard to not see more than about a dozen level 90s in any city but Org, and even then you'd see maybe 30 at peak times.

Blizzard claims they're merging low pop realms, but in typical fashion several never actually happened even though they said they would. I got sick of being strung alomg after about 6 weeks of no new news. I swear they're actively trying to kill that game sometimes. If Blizzard weren't such a shiatty, arbitrary company I'd have spent far more on WoW than I did. As it stands, between lag frustration quits, patch problem quits and various other issues I wound up paying for something like only 32 months between Oct. 2007 and now. And since my off times overlapped heavily with xpacs, I don't think I ever paid more than 19.99 for any of them.

No way. Even the poorest, dumbest human immediately understands the insignificance of the toenail pile. You could tour the planet with the pile, take it out in space, even use it as a weapon. The shelf life is longer, it doesn't require any kind of electricity.. Toenail pile outranks any digital achievement.

Not really? It uses the standard positive reinforcement mechanics coupled with something challenging.  Do a trick? Get a treat. Just like training a farking dog.  It's not remotely like scientology, in that it does not ever want you to withdraw and insulate.

Granted, I did find MMOs as a whole boring as shiat, it's by design, and the reward cycle just doesn't do much for me. I like story, and it's realistically next to impossible to consume story while playing an MMO.

No, you pick a faction before you leave the starting area, not when you are first created. It's at about level 10--12, normally, right before you get sent either to Orgrimar or Stormwind. I just can't see staying in the baby area to 90 because nothing you kill will give you any xp at all after a while and picking herbs/mining will drop down to like 2xp. It would take you farking forever, be incredibly boring, and ugh! I can't even think about it.

/have 74 toons - 5 of them 90s but none under 60

These kids have it farking easy with these games. I remember playing the original EQ when you could level, get all new spells and stuff appropriate for your new level, then get killed and lose enough experience where you were knocked backed down a level and now you cannot use your newer spells. And on top of it you had to grind out for all that experience you lost. Plus heaven forbid if you died again while trying to regain your lost experience...

Miss my Dark Elf Necromancer. He could walk into Faydar and Freeport without getting attacked, but in Crushbone I was kill on sight. Not that it mattered since my level was so high I was untouchable.

Ooooh! I left before the pandas got added so I didn't know that. Well, that makes more sense then.

I too tried going back a couple years ago, but I just couldn't get in to it. It just didn't seem fun, I knew it was going to be starting a second job again...

Well, first, the character didn't leave Pandaria, he never left the Wandering Isle, which is the Pandaren starting zone. Separate zones. Most Pandaren from the Wandering Isle never have seen Pandaria either.

Doubleagent has been a remarkably committed person. I hope he keeps the character neutral and then goes for 100 in Warlords of Draenor.

part of it is that the weapon plans for blacksmiths were gated behind the rather challenging Klaxxi rep, and were rather low level (464 at launch) - you could get equal weapons from Questing or Dungeons. So weapon creation was not important. Later on they gave plans for 502 weapons (with classic TBC models) but then 5.4 rendered them moot when you could get nearly as good weapons just for grinding the Timeless Isle, which is easily solo-able. And honestly if you can do Timeless Isle, you can handle ToT LFR, where you can get better weapons for free.

/still make good money selling those 502 weapons to, I assume, lazy people.

I started going insane back in Cataclysm just looking for gear to start raiding again with my guild and eventually retired. I cannot even begin to contemplate the mind-numbingly, tedious strain this would put on me...

would a character that never left the starting area have full access to upgrades?  I mean, improved combat skills, spells, gear, whatever?  or does it only improve the skill(s) being used?

I guess what i'm asking is, is the toon as strong as any other level 90, or is it a high-level, low-ability anti-twink (with a 100% "gathering" stat)?

Yes, a character who never left the starting area would have full access to all skills and abilities. However, they would not have direct access to any of the high level armor, which is where most of the stats--and therefore power--comes from. However, if some other player gave them the armor or they bought it off the auction house they then would in effect be the same as any other level 90.

Remember boat rides you had to take back to your corpse if you died far away from spawn point? That must've been at least a 20 minute ride to try and reach your corpse and you probably had no armor, no protection, nothing. I hated dying in the middle of the worst zones because it was guaranteed that once I reached the area where I died, my char would be running like a little biatch just to reach my corpse.

Bah! EQ was noobville. UO, pre-T2A was murder incarnate. You could spend hours trying to get back to what passed as a safe area. Everything and everyone out to kill you, for kicks.

I think at EQ launch I decided to run from Qeynos to Freeport with my level 12 mage for some reason (Maybe there was no boat at the time? Maybe I was just retarded?)

I remember being absolutely petrified that I was going to die like one zone from the city and have to run my ass all the way back.

I beg your pardon, sir. I never killed anyone in UO. Broke into their houses and looted everything, sure. Trained aggro mobs near them, sure. I think there was some sort of portal trick that had the same effect - been a while. But I remember that I never killed any other PCs.

UO was great fun.  I used to get PK'd all the time by some gangsters who I swear to God always knew where to find me when I was farming (usually at that graveyard with the lich spawn).  I was finally able to hide pretty well, and so my toon developed pretty well (I cannot remember the leveling system and the reputation system very well).

One day, I cast that spell reflection spell on myself, teleported to the graveyard, and one of the PK's was there.  He LOL's, casts Corp Por or whatever it was on me, and promptly kills himself.  I took all his stuff, and waited for his ghost to come back to his corpse.  Ooo ooooo oo oooo!!!  LMAO

You can easily argue that we are currently playing wow 3.0 or 5.0, depending on where you draw the lines.
Vanilla and BC were very similar when it came to leveling, playing and raiding.
The next 3 expansions changed raiding and type of raiding, as the playing community changed.

Was blizz working on a NEW game titan or something?
Not sure what WoW2 would have that would make it any different than the current expansions.

Bringing back old players? Meh, that already happens. People come back all the time, remember why they left - aka - wanting more free time in RL, and leave again.

The best part over the years was watching people leave to play the next wow killer, and watching how quick they came back.

part of it is that the weapon plans for blacksmiths were gated behind the rather challenging Klaxxi rep, and were rather low level (464 at launch) - you could get equal weapons from Questing or Dungeons. So weapon creation was not important. Later on they gave plans for 502 weapons (with classic TBC models) but then 5.4 rendered them moot when you could get nearly as good weapons just for grinding the Timeless Isle, which is easily solo-able. And honestly if you can do Timeless Isle, you can handle ToT LFR, where you can get better weapons for free.

/still make good money selling those 502 weapons to, I assume, lazy people.


The rep grind to get most of the useful stuff was what finally killed the game for me. Making it so that you no longer got rep from running dungeons turned playing time into a mass of daily quests... that everyone else was also doing.

I still don't understand how WoW is supposed to be "fun".
 It's like everybody bought the "World of Warcraft Strategy Guide", and simply follows the steps. There seems to be almost no real skill involved.

The only skill is in managing a raid group (I'm amazed 40 mans even happened back in the day).  The rest is just having to know when to move, when to stay still, and have enough damage output.

All the bosses have a pattern, once you learn that pattern, it's cake (again assuming you have the DPS to take it down before the enrage timer hits and you wipe).

I play Rift too, but only about 4-6 hours a week. I'm trying to be reasonable about it  LOL (used to play WOW about 6 hours a day up until I quit about 4 years ago.)

Until they have an age limit, I won't play that game anymore.  I just can't stand all the tweens doing tween things (d00d, i'm da best!) and basically just being idiots, ruining the experience for real people.

Maybe they could try copying the old EQ model of leaving your corpse to rot when you die, with naked player respawns.  Add in some actual danger, and the kids would flee in droves to something easier.

Pvp takes a lot of skill, too, depending on the class. I have a feeling its going to change significantly in warlords, though.

So, to ask a REALLY dumb question -- mainly because I expect to never play WOW or any other MMORPG (addictive personality, don't want to go down that road):

If someone started to play WOW right now, how much of the original game would they miss?  I expect that at least some of the original gameplay, or parts of early expansion packs et al would be obsolete or removed for balancing or other reasons.

All of it, this expansion included some disaster or something that reshaped the entire zone, so not only are the mechanics different than launch but the basic world is too.

So this person stayed in the pandarian starting zone and leveled to 90?    That had to be a major headache since the xp for low level herbs and minerals is very low.

Why would you pay extra money to have a level 90 of a class you already have one of?

I dunno, I had guildies who had multiple toons of the same class and it struck me as very bizzare.

I don't think that's possible. You would pick your faction during character creation.

That's what TFA is about, the panda-bears start out neutral until level 10, then you essentially do a quest turnin to decide which faction to ally with, and get tossed out into the big bad world.  The guy in TFA never turned the quest in and just leveled gathering herbs in the starter zone.


In truth you don't actually finish until you're level 12, same as the worgen and goblin starter zones.  I've had people claim that you can get out at level 10 but I've played those zones straight non stop to see if tie was possible and it's always at level 12.

I'm calling bullshiat on this since prior to the MOP xpac, (with the most level cap) you had to pick a faction when starting.

skozlaw: MoP was actually a decent xpac. Not BC or Wrath level quality, but decent and far better than that sorry mess they called Cataclysm. Not having to grind raid gear on every character just to be able to join up for raids you already had access to on other toons was a nice touch.

Blizzard claims they're merging low pop realms, but in typical fashion several never actually happened even though they said they would.

Cata is more like WOW 2 than any of the other xpasc.  If there was actually a WoW 2, they might have done like was done with Guild Wars 2 and have it take place many years later, GW2 takes place 250 years after the first GW.
That new game code named Titan, I've been hearing rumors for at least a year, maybe more, but nothing solid.
The wow killer players, that is fun to watch.  For eyars everytime a new MMO was coming out, people would say this could be the next wow Killer, even when the game was a different genre, like those Star Wars or Star Trek.  And most of those Wow killers ended up becoming free to play in or to attract new players.

Maybe trying out different race/class combos since all the races now have different starting zone.  Granted once you pass level 20 you're usually in the same zones if you stay in the same continent.

Its Wow, not like race gives you anything all that unique.  I mean, I understand why you woud want 1 of each class and 1 of each race, but that doesn't even begin to touch how many alts he claimed to have.

It does make me feel less pathetic about having 4 max level guys in TBC before I quit, though.

Actually, sounds like they did change things.

I stopped playing once I reached Alderaan and the story got extremely boring, and I slogged through Taris without complaint, because it was fun to remember KOTOR and what Taris once was.

I don't even remember there being a way to get from Qeynos to Freeport quickly without running it.  Although I did quit EQ soon after the first expansion came out, soooooo.....

Still, it was a bit of a surprise to run through Kithicor at night for the first time.  It was a newbie zone during day time, but at night time...  it becomes a high level undead zone full of creatures that could kill you just by looking at you.  I was not expecting that.

Yes, but it's absurd to think you need to try every race/class combination.  I understand wanting to try every class, and perhaps every race to see the new starting zones, but its not like "Wow, I already have a troll Shaman and Warrior, but I need to find out how that 5% extra damage against beasts synergizes with a troll mage".

A few of the storylines were pretty good.  Imperial agent was a lot of fun, and it was fun being a sith sorcerer and having the option to force lightining peopel in most conversations.

But yeah, they could have distilled the good story parts and made an actual KOTOR 3 instead of trying to cash in on the MMO bandwagon.

I will say that most games get free to play wrong but my only real solid experience with f2p MMO model(s) was with City of Heroes.

Sure the CoH f2p had some rough patches and it wasn't perfect but I thought it did well (and from some reports was financially stable...until NcSoft felt like killing CoH).

I was in the beta for the latest Star Wars MMO and I did enjoy the "single player story".  The cutscenes talking with NPCs did make it feel like KOTOR to some degree.  I did enjoy it and thought about going into it heartily but then I thought about it more and decided that I don't need "another job" again...so....

I beg your pardon, sir. I never killed anyone in UO. Broke into their houses and looted everything, sure. Trained aggro mobs near them, sure. I think there was some sort of portal trick that had the same effect - been a while. But I remember that I never killed any other PCs.


I was a house thief as well. Lots of fun. Well, lots of boredom as well.
