Huh. I thought it was already understood that the solar magnetic field was responsible for the extreme temperatures in the corona. From my understanding the whole thing is like one bigass particle accelerator.

Although I guess now we have a better understanding of the mechanism.

Perhaps the explanation was only a hypothesis, and this provides evidence to back it up.

When you're dealing with a plasma, isn't it basically the same thing? Temperature is the average of atomic motion, and all the particles in a plasma are ions, so based on my layman's understanding of the subject, EM fields heating up the plasma would also be accelerating its particles to wicked velocities.
