Someone always says "At least she died doing something she loved."  That always sounds like BS to me.  She had a lot more years of life left.

FTA: "Sykes was reported missing late Wednesday when she failed to meet up with her boyfriend as planned during a day hike on the east side of the mountain."

I bet the police are going to have a little talk with the boyfriend.

There is no sign of "foul play".  He stopped when they got to the snow, and she kept going, as she often did, according to her hiking pals.  She fell and died.  It happens.

This sort of thing happens with increasingly clockwork regularlity.

Rainier is turning out to be the king of inadvisable solo day hikes.

That's weird because I've always thought that's exactly how I'd like to go:  caught in a mechanical pin setter with a wrist brace crammed in my mouth down at the Regal Lanes.

It doesn't take much, to die in the mountains. Falling and being alone will just about do it.

As an avid hiker and runner... The journey is the destination. She didn't die old and toothless in bed.

I have had several close calls where I was sure it was the end. And anyone who is willing to commune with nature and move and feel the wonder that is the human body at its most primal gets my greatest respect.

Gods watch over her

I don't have a lot of snark for this one. I often sneak onto the golf course and play 4 or 5 holes fairly late in the evening.

The other night it occurred to me that if I had a heart attack and died with half a beer and half a bowl sitting next to on one of the benches, to be found by some dewsweeper the next morning, it would not be the worst way to go.

A 70-year-old hiker who died of hypothermia in rugged terrain in Mount Rainier National Park over the weekend was experienced, prepared and knew the mountain well after having written dozens of stories about treks through the area.

Mountains are killing people. Folks, it's time to talk serious about mountain control legislation. Only we can guarantee these tragedies never happen again and we don't have to bury yet another victim of cruel, vicious, heartless mountain brutality. It's time to corral these mountain nuts endangering us all.

I believe the feminist movement and society in general has left western women somewhat naive about their own vulnerability.  Yes you are strong, powerful, intelligent and capable.  No you should not be hiking or traveling in third world countries by yourself.

Hmm.  The hiker's daughter made this Facebook post the day after her mother was reported missing:

"My mother suffered from depression. She was on anti-depressants. She told me in the recent past she wanted to die in the mountains if she was going to die. She told me in a most recent email that she felt her sun was shrinking. I am hoping that she is still alive and still has the will to fight for her life and be found."

Can't post the FB link, for some reason....

Not well enough, apparently...

Trails change. I went down one in the park near my house, that was a very easy and maintained trail, after a few days of rain. A large tree had fallen across it and the trail was washed out in parts - literally no horizontal surface to walk. It was a short bit and not on a very dangerous slope, so I just kept going over it, but it wasn't "easy and safe" as it had been when I had hiked it before.

Also, being an "experienced" hiker often means "more willing to do dangerous stuff". Hiking is not rock climbing or skydiving, but the risk of falling off a mountain is very real. A bit more confidence means you do things that are more iffy. I've climbed up a mountain here on a trail that is not considered extreme but which had several dangerous parts at the top and was on top of sharp cliffs for the second half (one side of the trail has a bit of room and trees, the other side has a looooong drop). This is not even "extreme".

Outdoor exploration sports are not for those trying to make certain they die very old and in a bed, unless you are very cautious and never take risks. People who are into it generally take risks, let's be honest here.
