Hugh Grant got caught with a hooker. His career probably isn't where it would be had that not happened.

It took nearly a decade for Robert Downey Jr. to recover from his career-destroying cycle of alcohol and drug abuse in the late-80s, early 90s.

Wesley Snipes was Blade. Now, post-prison, he's in the Expendables 3, where action stars go to die.

Pretty girls who talk dirty are funny. And Lisa Lampanelli is funny. That's the best I can do for you.

Wait, I had a huge crush on Janeane Garafalo in the mid 90s. She was hot and funny. She was in that movie, that Cyrano de Bergerac thing where she was the ugly one and Uma Thurman was the pretty one except Janeanne tuned out to ultimately won the gay guy. But then she got all feminist an covered herself with tattoos and shiat.

Let's hand pick some examples to prove our point and then write an entire article about it.

Drew Barrymore = RDJ
Katherine Heigl = Terrence Howard

Some male actors are dicks and it ruins their careers too and some female actors do tons of drugs but rebound nicely.  Stupid jezebel.....

FTA: "I was talking about it this weekend with one of my friends, when were were talking about Little Women and how Winona Ryder was the star of the 90s"

And then the author wonders why women do not get any respect? When gossip tries to masquerade for rumination no wonder people laugh.

As for Lana, she seems to me the perfect embodiment of the hipster ethos--mimicking the style of a bygone era without the fuss and bother of delivering its substance.

2014-06-22 11:39:13 PM
I love, LOVE the unintentional irony of this article: "Female celebrities are unfairly criticized. Take Lana del Ray. Sure, she's pretentious, but come on. I don't like Katherine Heigl, but she could be worse. Kristen Stewart is utterly sullen, but who cares? Also, Gweneth Paltrow is the absolute worst; I really hate her. Anyhow, I just can't figure out this straw man I've created where female celebrities are harshly criticized but all male celebrities get a pass and their antics are never ever brought under scrutiny. Ever."

I thought that what did Winona in wasn't the shoplifting so much as that the shoplifting demonstrated that she was a train wreck. Wasn't she in full Lindsay Lohan level meltdown but had been able to hide it from the public until then?

And Eddie Murphy got caught with a transvestite hooker in his car and his career survived. Sort of.

female comedians are an egnima. I can see that trappings for a pretty girl who tells jokes and everyone laughs.  She may think she is genuinely funny, but really guys are laughing to get on her good side and into her pants.  but how is she to know?  if someone criticisizes her justly, they get attacked as 'hating' females.

conversely, a pretty girl who just tells fart jokes and talks like a sailor has a nice shock value, but the quaity had better be there otherwise it is just a gimmick/hack type of approach.  Silverman falls into this category for me.

there are funny female out there, wynda sykes jumps immediately to mind, but they have good material and delivery and don't rely on gimmicks...like maraget cho.

maria bamfield I think is a strong female comedian who is also pretty, but she has bits, voices, characters...a solid set

She had some untreated mental health issues. She got pills or treatment, and she got better. No real trainwreck... Not like Lohan.

If you read that original Lana Del Rey interview and thought she needed less sexism in the world instead of a friend to tell her to check into therapy, you may be a Jezebel blogger.

Ah. I thought there was something wrong with her. She disappeared for a few years. And it wasn't just because of the shoplifting thing. I think she kind of drifted off before that.

Maybe it's because men are better at their craft.

Also maybe people don't respect actresses much because of the preponderance of talentless whores i.e. Megan Fox.

Sort of.  Ryder's career was built on her image as an extremely likable down-to-earth Gen-X poster girl.  The shoplifting incident destroyed that image not so much because of the severity of the crime but the WTF nature of it.  After all, why would a rich Hollywood actress feel the need to shoplift?  And this wasn't like she did this impulsively while blitzed out of her mind since the dressing room tapes indicated there was some planning involved.  As a result, many of Ryder's fans felt they'd spent over ten years being played by an entitled sociopath who thought she was above the law.

The title of that article should read as;

Moronic celebrity images are easy to tarnish.

Whether they're women or men really has no bearing when these people have less brains and use than a box of rusty hammers.

2014-06-23 01:25:08 AM
Yeah, I think a lot of this has to do with the image the celebrity cultivates.  We'll accept almost anything as a culture as long as you're upfront about it.  Charlie Sheen never pretended to be anything other than a coke loving whoremonger.  Tiger Woods lost every endorsement deal under the sun after it turned out he wasn't the family man his handlers wanted us to think he was.

2014-06-23 01:26:39 AM
I'd give doubt but Hollywood does kind of treat Charlie Sheen as a god when he did drugs and spoke nonsense. Have yet to see a woman try that and become a sensation.

I can't fault Wesley for taking a part in Expendables 3. I'm sure he still owes Uncle Sam quite a bit of money, so he needs to get to work. Plus, it's an established franchise that has done pretty well, and it will give him his first theatrical release in a very long time.

The first thing we have to remember is that most people do not care about celebrities.  Of those that care enough to follow them, most are women -- for example, US Weekly's readership is 79% women.  Thus when the writer of this article says these celebrities image is easily tarnished and implies sexism as the root cause, what she's really saying is that amongst the mostly female audience for celebrity gossip, female celebrities are easier to tear down.  This is because biatches be jealous.

Also, the actors known for difficult personalities she mentions -- Sean Penn, Jared Leto, Christian Bale -- tend to get a pass for their behavior from a different group entirely than the gossip rags (rather from the mainstream press) not because they are men, but because they have the mystique of "the artiste" and people expect that type to be temperamental.  Don't blame patriarchy, blame Marlon Brando.  Christian Bale didn't get a free pass from gossip mongers for his outburst, but the mainstream media's reaction was basically "Ha hah, Bale is a prima donna. Figures." because it fits right into a cultural narrative.

Kathryn Heigl doesn't get the same pass because she's not a brilliant actress.  Trust me, Tilda Swinton can be as weird as she wants and get away with it, because everyone whose opinion matters thinks she's brilliant.  But the gossip rags ignore Swinton because she's not just a pretty face.
