In WWII, the Army Air Corps suffered more casualties than the Navy and the Marines combined. Most people don't realize how insane it was, getting into flying metal tubes over and over again to get shot out of the sky during missions.

Bombing runs over Europe wasn't as dramatic as storming beaches with John Wayne.

/Former father-in-law was a B-17 radio operator.

We need to have another war soon, now that Twitter is here. These images would be so much more timely that way and the impact would be immediate. Who wants to wait 70 years to see color combat footage when I can see it on my smartphone NOW?

My father-in-law (RIP) flew those missions as nose gunner/navigator. He would NOT watch that kind of footage. He would leave the room when they came onto the TV. He would stay gone for about an hour.

You just know half the Russian air-force has mounted dash-cams in their cockpits by now (to prevent aeronautical insurance fraud), we just have to wait for that footage to trickle out.

Who can blame the U,S., when the damn Nazis are crashing their planes into our aircraft carrier parked off of Hamburg.

Serious question: was it more dangerous to fly in WWI or WWII?

I guess everyones' reactions was different. My dad was a navigator on a B-24 in the Pacific, and this kind of footage didn't seem to bother him any. I don't think he liked "12 O'Clock High" very much - it was in syndication when I was a kid and I watched it all the time - but I think that was because it probably bothered him if they got something wrong.

This *particular* video drives me up a wall due to the stupid editing and the obvious audio "enhancements". Normally I'd love something like this but I couldn't watch more than a minute.

War Thunder is on PC, and the sim mode is more realistic than any sane person would actually want. They just added playable tanks and mixed battles too, but it's a bit of a shiatshow at the moment.

WW1 was typically more dangerous, but it depended on the front and who you were fighting for.

This guy has done an impressive job of using Il2 1946 in combination with other animation and live actors to recreate some German intercept missions. Not that a mission in an American heavy bomber was ever easy, but those prior to the introduction of the P-51 and its ability to escort them all of the way to the targets must have been especially terrifying.

Life expectancy of a WWI pilot was less than 2 weeks.  Wood and fabric airplanes had a habit of failing during dogfight maneuvers and parachutes were considered cowardly.

I have it on XP still and works well on Win7 and 8 for the most part. It worked fine on my Gateyway with Win7. I ran the install and it worked fine. No need to any compat mode or admin setting in my case.

Some have probs with Win7 and 8 but  99% of probs can be fixed by not installing into Program Files x86, Running as administrator and/or setting a compat mode.

Some of the last thing I have did was a rebuild of the old AI B-24D to a player/AI B-24J

www.sim-outhouse.com

and a P-47N made from the CFS3 P-47D-25 that was included in the CFS3 SDK.

I had a fishing buddy who had participated in the Ploesti raid. His matter of fact description of what he saw that day blew my mind. He told me when his B-24 landed back in Libya there were nearly 400 holes in it from flak and fighter fire. These guys had brass balls for sure.

The Schweinfurt Ball Bearings works was another really bad place to try to hit. The inability or unwillingness of Bomber command to supply long range fighter escort left the B-17's on the two raids there defenseless for nearly 2 hours at a time. It's a miracle any planes returned from there.

/// RIP Bob.
