(CrushPlate)   Live web cam from Southern California where scientists gather for the rare bloom of a huge 27 pound, 11 foot tall flower. Best part, it's an amorphophallus titanum or corpse flower and the bloom smells like wretched, dying, rotting, animal carcass   (crushplate.com) divider line 34

I got to see a corpse flower up close but it hadn't opened yet. Missed that by three days. Ours was named George Romero, after the night of the living dead director. This was in Pittsburgh, so it was named appropriately.

The one in the picture is already opened so it is not the one that is about to bloom but it does seems it is the one they're talking about when they say it's eleven foot and twenty seven  pound, the one shown on the webcam is closed and looks a lot shorter when there are people around for comparison, I'd say about 5 foot.

Yeah I saw that link too, only after I posted.

If subby claims webcam then there better be actual webcam-in-article and not a link.

Wouldn't there need to be at least two blooming at once to ever get seeds!

I was thinking didn't this just happen recently? and TFA stated that the last time was seven years ago!

The Dutch band Crucified Corpse has a song called "A Corpse in Bloom" on their 1994 demo tape: Reflections from the Other Side.  Sadly I can't find a recording of that song online, there are a few others on YouTube though.

It doesn't. These plants only bloom once every 7 years. However, there are more than just one of them here in Socal, Huntington Gardens has one but it bloomed a few years ago.

Scientists are a strange lot.  For example, I rarely fart; however, I know when I am about to pass gas because a group of scientists suddenly gather around me.  It was strange the first time, but I've gotten used to it.

Search for Dracunculus vulgaris. A bit hard to find, but much smaller and more affordable for us common folk.

/bloom is about 12" long
//yes they stink!

Now, sit down and calm yourself then think about this...

SOMETHING USED TO POLLINATE THAT THING! SOME HUGE FARKING INSECT, BIRD, FLYING REPTILE, JESUS ON A DINOSAUR...SOMETHING.

Having looked at the set-up, I can predict some idiot is going to trash this bloom sometime tonight. Plastic wrap and temporary scaffolding doesn't not qualify as security.

The flower smells like rotting flesh because its pollinators are flies-- they burrow into the plant until they realize that it isn't a corpse, and in the meantime are pollinating the flower.

Oh, sure, now. Now that all the giant bees, dragon flies, and Jesus on a dinosaurs are dead.

The largest prehistoric bee-ant had a wingspan of almost 6 inches.

Meganeura dragonflies had wingspans of 26 inches.

I have no idea what Jesus's wingspan was or that of his dinosaur.

It's possible the flower's current pollination process is an adaptation.
