As long as anyone wearing, say, a cross or a turban also have their guns confiscated, I'm cool with this.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Pastafarians-and there was no one left to speak for me.

He had to see a psychiatrist who confirmed he was sane, and then he got his guns back.  As long as psychiatric evaluations are also mandated for people wearing crosses or turbans who want guns, I'm cool with this too.

A few of our resident gun nuts have tried to fear-monger in past threads by talking about how the UK and Australia apparently brought in very heavy firearms regulation a decade or so ago, but judging by that article it actually sounds fairly reasonable. Some random goofy-looking dude can own all the guns he wants (including pistols), but he has to get a license and if his sanity is in doubt he has to undergo psychiatric assessment to keep them.

I struggle to understand how anyone could have a problem with that.

Agreed. Some of the resident gun nuts here put forth the tired "slippery slope" argument ("If the government decides that the crazy people can't have guns, where does it end?")

A: At crazy people not having guns.

You don't have a problem with low-level government bureaucrats arbitrarily confiscating your property based on an ill-informed and unqualified assessment of your mental health?

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. The first thing you should do when critically evaluating any possible expansion of government power is to think of how it can be abused, because it almost certainly will be at some point.

"This guy looks crazy" should not be enough to result in anything being taken away.

Commonwealth countries have stronger gun laws than even Dianne Feinstein could legitimately expect to pass in the United States. Including the fact that everyone owning a gun must have a license, and demonstrate a genuine reason, or a genuine need depending on the gun.

Firearms such as Semi-Auto shotguns and AR/AK-style rifles are restricted to Government/Law Enforcement

And though the Pastafarian has agreed to have his gun licence photo retaken without the colander, he is going to try his luck with his driver's licence.

Yes.  Yes they will.

There's nothing to keep them from doing that now if they determine you're a nutcase, you just have to be an adjudicated mental defective, which, given the level of some of the derp over reasonable gun ownership management, would put some gun rights advocates in this position.

A lot of gun nuts are only marginally sane and could be reasonably concerned that they would be judged unfit to keep weapons.

No I don't have a problem with the people who issue firearms licenses being able to decide that one of the applicants should see a psychiatrist before he can have his guns back if he seems crazy. And "wearing a colander on your head to take a photo for your firearms license" is going to strike most people as pretty farking crazy.

But yeah, I'm sure this is the "slippery slope" leading to parking attendants being able to steal your cars forever if you park sloppily. That's totally the grim authoritarian future in store for any country that has any firearms laws whatsoever.

Because simply owning a tool shouldn't be something you have to ask the government for permission to do?

Because people have been declared 'insane' for believing in the wrong god(s), or none at all?

Because people can be arbitrarily declared 'insane' for pretty much any reason, and have to spend time and money proving otherwise?

Because the definition of 'insane' can easily be abused?
