Maybe because she was an idiot?

On Dec. 17, 2013, and again on Feb. 4, 2014, Munro failed to attend court as required to deal with the theft charge.

Munro's chance for diversion of the theft charge from the court system was lost when she failed to show up twice, said defence lawyer Terry Brandon

She would have been much better of in 'murica.  here, she can steal 2.5 Million worth of 'candy' and get away with it.  as long as she works on wall street and as long as she steals from the middle/working classes and not the wealthy/big business.

That's really stupid. But then I once got busted at the Park n Shop on Telegraph for failing to shoplift Herbal Essense shampoo, boot laces and a bag of dried figs. But I was a 5 year old runaway: that's my excuse.

In Canada, a judge is required to take a person's remorse into consideration for sentencing. Had she just shown up and apologized she probably would've been told to pay the store the $2.50 and maybe do some volunteer work.

When working in retail, I busted a kid for stealing a 50 cent soda. Ordinarily I would have let it go, but his response when I stopped him (fark you), made that not happen.
Police were called and when they arrived it was found that he was currently out on bond for some thing or other. However, a condition of bond is you commit no other crimes while being bonded.
That stolen soda ended up being a felony charge.
Kids are stupid, it's what they do.

As someone who was born and raised in Sarnia I am not terribly surprised. Something coming out of the chemical plants here just makes everyone extra stupid and pathologically lazy. There's really no other explanation. Said plants also provide the lucky Indian reservation downstream with the highest rate of birth defects in the country.

Now that most of the oil processing is being done either in Alberta or the States, the city is basically in its death throes. In a decade it'll probably be shiattier than Windsor, which is basically just south Detroit. Everyone I grew up with that had half a brain left town and never looked back.

/the ones with less than half a brain still try to leave, but usually end up back here where they can be among their own kind.

Failing to appear in court multiple times will usually put someone in the slammer...

Once you undertake a criminal activity, you, as the criminal decide what you are willing to trade the days of your life for.

For example, if someone shoots you for trying to steal $5 worth of plasticware out of their home, you, the criminal, decided that is what your life is worth, not the guy with the gun.

As someone who's spent the last 14 months in Sarnaria on a temporary job, I'll be glad to move back to Kitchener in August.

Didn't want "severe" consequences? Show the hell up for court. Or at least provide proof that you are unable to.

Not willing to do that? Enjoy your jailtime.

It means go big or go home. No one would even believe anything was wrong if you drove a forklift in the back and took off with an entire pallet of candy, let alone prosecute you.

/Also means that poor people get railroaded everywhere, especially if you have no money to pay a fine

Why should anyone be forced to deal with their own idiocy? In today's society they just want outrage until you find the facts support the time in jail.

Friend back in college was ordered to spend 4 weekends in jail for lifting a tin of chew. I think he never tried that again.

She didn't get railroaded at all. She decided that she wouldn't show up for court, not once, but twice. This has nothing to do with poor people. Take your misplaced outrage elsewhere.

Which is why the topic says she got jail time for stealing $2.50 in candy, but we all know now that it's really because she didn't show up for court... twice.

My goodlady wife escaped Sarnia when she was 17. I've been back with her a few times; it was kinda sad meeting folks who expressed little hope of escaping the factory jobs they were born into. A few told me that everyone knew about some of the nasty shiat going into the air and ground illegally for decades but the fear of a full-family blackball kept them quiet.

I really liked a lot of the people I encountered there (although where I come from, stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks isn't optional for drivers:)

and in america, and practically everywhere else in the known universe (including canada), a judge can throw your ass in jail for not showing up for your court date.

Kitchener's pretty shiatty in its own right. I love how they try to keep pushing diamonds into the turd that is downtown by adding nice shops and restaurants but refusing to take out the dive bars and other sketchy hangouts where the dregs of society congregate.

Can we see a picture of said sweet thief ? That might help us determine why?

No such thing. Trains run on tracks that only go where they're laid. Unlike me of course: I moved from California to Kentucky, and now I'm stuck. Where I can't get laid to save my life. (BIE? EIP!)
