Bartleby: Hello, we'd like two tickets to New Jersey, please.

Bus Station Attendant: Jersey's sold out, sir.

Loki: What?

Bus Station Attendant: There's one at the same time tomorrow. I suggest you not underestimate the staggering drawing power of the Garden State, and show up two hours in advance.

Excuse me. After reading this article, I need to go throw up. Keeping brain-dead patients alive with no hope of recovery is ethically and morally disgusting.

Get you a living will, people. No matter how young and healthy you are. People like Jahai McMath's parents will be making decisions for you if you don't.

Where do they keep the brain dead yet impatient? City Hall?

The reporter (Joe Vasquez) states that she IS at the hospital... but the hospital won't confirm she's there. So who is his source? Someone at the hospital? A McMath family member? Where's a picture of the "improving" girl? A saw a video where their lawyer claims she's improving and that they're planning on getting another opinion on whether she is still considered brain dead.

From what they say and the lawyer says, they have proof the girl is alive. That's a pretty strong statement - planning to get the girl reassessed.

However, everything is still word of mouth. The reporter places her at the hospital. He doesn't "allege" it. But is he making a journalistic lapse? Is the girl dead and gone, and the media is being treated to a dog and pony show? Is this just more fundraising by the family?

Their lawyer is a scumbag money-grubbing asshole. I'm cooking dinner right now so I don't have time to grab them all, but in the last McMath thread I linked the reports from three separate doctors who examined her and declared her brain dead. All agree (as well as the other three who also did, and the multiple brain scans) that her entire brain is 100% dead, including the entire brain stem. No portion of her brain or brain stem has had even a spark of activity or any blood flow at all since the original injury. I also posted what happens when a brain is without blood flow. Basically, after two weeks it is soup and by this point has most likely leaked out of her empty skull. She is not getting better. She has no brain. She is dead, never to return.

Also, if you are of strong constitution, google Lazarus effect. Creepy. But not a sign of life.

I don't see how her entire brain stem could be dead, too. Really?

That means they are supplementing EVERY ONE of her hormones and neurotransmitters.

Fermented Yak Juice: E_Henry_Thripshaws_Disease: has she decomposed yet, or is she still hittable?

Buck: Now here are the rules. Rule Number One: no punching her. The nurse comes in tomorrow and she got a shiner or less some teeth, jig's up. So, no knuckle sandwiches under no circumstances. And by the way, this little c#%*'s a spitter. It's a motor-reflex thing. But spit or not, no punching. Now, are we absolutely, positively clear on Rule Number One?
Trucker: Yeah.
Buck: Good. Now, Rule Number Two: no monkey bites, and no hickeys. In fact, no leaving no marks of any kind on her. After that, it's all good, buddy. Now, her plumbing down there don't work no more, so feel free to come in her all you want. Keep the noise down, try not to make a mess. I'll be back in twenty.
[Buck starts to leave, but snaps his fingers and turns back]
Buck: Oh, shiat! By the way, not every time but sometimes this chick's c#%^h will get drier than a bucket of sand. If she's dry, just lube up with this,
[tosses him a jar labeled "VasaLube"]
Buck: and you'll be good to go. Bon Appetite, good buddy.

"Dr Robert Shanahan performed the first such examination on December 11, 2013, and the results of that examination revealed that Ms. McMath had sustained an irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including her brain stem." (Three doctors give declarations of complete brain death in this link.)

Jesus christ. The only thing keeping her heart going are the chemicals they're pumping into her and her vagus nerve reflex. What do you want to bet they're giving her IV Dopamine to keep her vascular tone, too?

FTFA: "That's because New Jersey is the only state in the United States with a law requiring hospitals to accommodate brain-dead patients who belong to a religion that does not accept the diagnosis as a final verdict for death"

Are there religions that officially deny that brain dead isn't dead?
I think the cases involve personal religious belief that isn't sanctioned by some doctrine, and the advocates for the dead may be confused by official anti-abortion "sanctity of life" doctrines.

There are a lot of old religions that hold that the center of consciousness is not the brain, since its function is not as obvious as other organs.  In this girl's case, she's hooked up to machines that keep her lungs and heart moving, so an ignorant person could easily look at her and think she's still alive.

Religion itself is a symptom of brain death, so no surprise there.

If a brain-dead California girl who was the focus of a court fight over the removal of her life support is in a New Jersey hospital, it's probably the best destination for her, a medical expert said Thursday.

Wow, what a terribly written first sentence, unless the reporter is brain dead, in which case, valiant effort.
