(Popular Science)   New study contends that fish are tool users, feel pain, have long memories, deserve better treatment from us, are absolutely delicious when drizzled with olive oil, lime juice, grilled for 3-4 minutes, and served with a side of pineapple salsa   (popsci.com) divider line 6

As with ALL articles that are titled with questions, the answer to the title, making reading the article a waste of time, is always, "No".

Shakin_Haitian: Anyone who thinks fish don't feel pain and don't remember past a few minutes is a farking retard.

Actually they don't. They react to the stimuli, ie they try to get away, but they don't have persistent pain.

For example.
I have always had fish. Back in college I bred piranhas because I thought it was pretty cool. A friend bought a small Koi (Comet actually) for the fish's annual Tank Day. The Comet swam around the large aquarium for about ten minutes before they attacked. The Piranhas tore the Comet's belly out and then left it alone. The Comet reacted to the two strikes, but that took ten seconds. As soon as it was over the Comet went right back to swimming around the tank - oblivious to the serious injury. If it experienced pain it would have shown some behavior change. Hell, it didn't even avoid the Piranhas.

They ate the rest of the pretty fish later.

FormlessOne: Calmamity: Animals eat other animals. News at 11.

...and we're done. As an aside, we, too, are animals. The only difference between us and the fox is that we worry about the goose's feelings, and that's OK.

to me vegans are like the gay people that try to pretend to be heterosexual. It's fighting your basic instinct as a human animal. Should we eat meat and not care about where it comes from and how the animals are treated? of course not, but if more people focused on eating sustainably and moved us away from factory farming things would be a lot better than going around screaming meat is murder or calling people that eat dairy products rapists
