Why, back in the day, we used to call the bath houses of New York "gay villages".  Where do you think the Village People came from?

Sometimes you want to get out of the hustle and bustle of urban neighborhoods and raise your kids in a quiet bedroom community with your life partner, but you still want to live in an enclave of like-minded people. It's true for many heterosexuals, I don't see why it wouldn't for others.

I don't see why anyone would be upset.  Those "Jew-only" villages in the 30s and 40s we all the rage.

The more time you spend concocting elaborate hoaxes to "draw attention" to your cause the less time you spend having sweet, sweet gay sex. So, fail.

How do you say YMCA in Dutch?

Well, the Amsterdam scenes from Deuce Bigalow European Gigolo were pretty ghey, except for the Waffle house scene.

"Endorsed by the city's mayor and a developer to give it more authenticity"

Huh? If the actual mayor of the city is endorsing the "project", I'm not sure you can say people fell for the "hoax"... I mean, the real friggin mayor endorsed it.

Without effective leadership this village will continue to drift like a rudderless ship.

If someone thought "I couldn't care less about a gay city", would it mean they were duped by the hoax?

I see what you're saying and had a similar thought-- well, with the mayor on board, who wouldn't fall for it?-- but it is still a "hoax" and everyone did fall for it. But the mayor had better not be nursing hopes of higher office.

FTA "The Tilburg municipality deliberately misled the press and allowed them to publish incorrect information," the letter added, saying their credibility has been damaged."

Fark you. If anyone damaged any credibilty, it was you for being a lazy coont and not fact check to see if it was real or not before going to print.

Farking journalist blaming others for their own lazyness.

They perpetrated this hoax in the hopes of eliciting the exact negative response to the idea of a gay village that they got.  Or, put another way, they were fishing for a complement, much like a woman saying, "I think I need to go on a diet" in the hopes you'll say "You don't need to go on a diet honey, you're perfect the way you are!"

Gotcha.

Welcome to the Gaytto. Population One.

For people with zero gaydar.

And Lord knows there's enough of them--a lot of people thought Liberace was a Lady's Man.

I wish my brother George were here.

Not quite the same thing, but to what extent can you you get away with building a retirement "village" for a specific group of people in the USA?  I have heard of a retirement home for blues musicians who were cheated out of their royalties by record companies, for example, and their appear to be some entirely Jewish retirement complexes in Florida.  On NPR I heard a story about people trying to set up retirement homes specifically for elderly homosexual couples, with the two main points being a) same-sex couples would be allowed to live together, and b) anyone who has a problem with that would be escorted off of the premises.  But under the public accommodations act, can you really limit your retirement home to only gay couples, or blues musicians, or jews?

Maybe it's in here:

If someone built such a village in the US, it would become a Priority One target for mass shootings.

/wish that weren't so
//the venn diagram of people with lots of guns and people who are homophobic isn't too far away from a perfect circle

With the booming Muslim population in Amsterdam it won't be long until gays and Jews feel a little more than uncomfortable. A few years back I stumbled into a Muslim neighborhood of Amsterdam while drunk and was harassed. Luckily, a homeless Pakistani whom I gave some cash to earlier that day, saw me and lead me to the right part of town so I could find my hotel

It's an obvious hoax, there would be too many leaky dikes and not enough little boys with thumbs.
