There are at least 2 that I know of.  When I visited Nepal in 2012 one of them was not available so we went to see the other one.  My mom freaked out and was very upset about the whole thing since they have no life after they stop being a goddess and have to be beggars because no one will hire them.   It was a very interesting experience, we had to remove all leather before meeting her.

It was weird because the one time I met her she ask me if my starship could carry her wisdom beyond the Barrier!

I'm not surprised she's a diligent student. If everyone around you considers you to be some form of deity, nodding and smiling while soaking up as much knowledge as possible you can get the fark out of there is very reasonable. Other options come to mind first, but plans for world domination aside this is also a good idea.

2014-06-20 08:55:02 AM
Being a deity is great work, if you can get it. Though I guess they have problems like everyone else...avatar bubbles collapsing, difficulty transitioning to new careers, executed by Romans, whatever.

Sometimes, religions are intricate systems of morality and mythology interwoven to provide structure and stability to a primitive society.

Other times, ancient people realized that the bronze age and early iron age sucked and that maybe a really complicated LARP game where the other folk can't opt out might relieve some of the boredom.

In both cases shiat got stupid pretty fast a few hundred years ago when some assholes decided to ruin all the fun by actually working out how things work and designing rituals around actually making life better instead of filling empty time and enslaving people to the priestly caste.  Damn you, Science!

This kind of reminds me of American worship of cheerleaders, prom queens and beauty queens. The difference is, Americans strive for that worship. The Kumari of Nepal seem to have this fame and worship thrust upon them.
Both seem to revel in it, but also tire of it. I would imagine both would be prone to having "not relevent anymore" depression afterwards.

I'm not sure which is worse: believing your god has reincarnated as a 12 year old girl or believing your god is appearing to you on a piece of food.

How the FARK does menstruation suddenly revoke one's godhood?

I was kinda curious about this myself, so...apparently, there are two stories:

- the goddess hung out with the king, but he tried to bang her, and she got mad, so after the king begged forgiveness, she said she'd only come back as a young girl so the king wouldn't try his game any more;

- the goddess, in the form of a snake, was shooting craps with the king all secret-like, but the king's wife found out, and the goddess was not cool with this, but she relented and decided the king would have to find her in the form of a young girl to make things cool again.

I imagine the onset of monthlies means the girl's a woman now or some such thing, thus no longer a valid avatar according to the rules.

/very shallow overview

Not being Nepali, I'm just spitballing here, but I assume it has something to do with being a virgin and (supposedly) pure of spirit.  When she first experiences menstrual flow, her god spirit may flow out of her and onto the next Kumari.

Proof again that people will believe in all kinds of dumb shiat.

No more dumb than a lot of things people believe, beginning with that, in our highly evolved intelligence and ego that we are the best that life could come up with and gives us the right to sneer and look down our noses at what others believe.

Pretty much every religion has some sort of weirdness about menstruation and purity. See also: Old Testament.

I visited the palace of the Kumari in Durbar Square in 2011, though I didn't go farther than the courtyard. The deal evidently being "if she comes to the window that's fine, but no talking to her and no photography."

I don't know the situation with the other Kumaris, but evidently in more recent years the one in Kathmandu *is* educated, and in fact even gets a modest pension.

Um, only a few young, unmarried girls? Are they faster then the young married ones?

The majority of the non-religious things people believe can be measurably verified as being within some approximation of correct.  The large-scale things like the planet orbiting the sun anyhow, science can't help you with thinking that all the women in accounting are admiring you when you walk out of the room instead of making fun of you or that your ex-wife is a whore or whatever.  And the non-religious things people get wrong can be corrected, usually just by pointing out in a verifiable manner that they're wrong.

The majority of religious things people believe are 100% verifiably incorrect, sometimes requiring little more than looking at the internal logic of the wrong beliefs themselves, more frequently disproved by empiricism.  This girl is a returned god?  There are more than one of them at once.  The signs used to find them being reliable = 100% unarguably disproved.  But, being religious, pointing it out doesn't actually change anything.

Sneering is... pretty much the appropriate response there.  Hell, learning to do that to yourself is like 99% of training to become a scientist.  It's not like we're immune to religious thinking, it's just that we think "oh, bible says Jesus will return before Peter dies.  Peter's dead, no Jesus.  OK, the entire 99% of Christianity anticipating judgment day is simply verifiably wrong."  This is why the few religious scientists you'll find are 'agnostics', e.g. agnostic theists who just kinda hope bigger intelligences than us might be around somewhere instead of making concrete claims.  Concrete claims have historically been a bad move for religion, especially once literacy crossed the 10% mark for the general population.

// Not a coincidence that the Christian Church explicitly tried to suppress/ban the printing press and literacy in europe, or that the Chinese empires co-opted all the literate people into a position where they had financial incentive to status quo it up.  The jump form reading to other forms of basic abstract thought is a short and dangerous one.
