"Hall of Fame resume"?

A DH with PED Issues?  He should never see the inside of the Hall of Fame without paying admission.

*Chuckle*

But in all seriousness, he has been doing this quite a bit in recent years. It's getting annoying even for most Red Sox fans. Let's pretend he had a chance to get to 3,000 hits. I could probably understand it then. But he doesn't, so he should pipe down.

If Edgar Martinez isn't considered HoF material, Ortiz isn't even in the neighborhood

They should let Papi and Manny in the HOF, why not both were only suspected in 2003.... Oh sorry Manny..

Right? And now Manny is employed in the Cubs in a minor league player / coach position. I bet he's teaching those kids the right way to play the game!

Ortiz is presently 20th among active players by WAR, just ahead of Joe Mauer (who is seven years younger) and Bartolo Colon.  Ortiz is 38 years old, has... uh... conditioning issues, and probably has two seasons (at most) left in the tank after this one.

Here's the current active top 20 list, with their ages in parentheses, and bolding guys who I think are highly likely to get in:
1. Alex Rodriguez (38) 116.0
2. Albert Pujols (34) 94.6
3. Adrian Beltre (35) 72.5
4. Derek Jeter (40) 72.4
5. Carlos Beltran (37) 67.4
6. Bobby Abreu (40) 60.7
7. Chase Utley (35) 60.2
8. Tim Hudson (38) 59.1
9. Ichiro Suzuki (40) 58.6
10. Mark Buehrle (35) 57.4
11. Miguel Cabrera (31) 57.0
12. CC Sabathia (33) 55.0
13. Johan Santana (35) 51.4
14. Jason Giambi (43) 50.8
15. Torii Hunter (38) 48.8
16. Mark Teixeira (34) 48.4
17. David Wright (31) 48.0
18. Robinson Cano (31) 47.4
19. Miguel Tejada (40) 47.1
20. David Ortiz (38) 45.7

(You might be able to talk me into Hudson, Beltran, an Utley who stays healthy for a couple years, or a CC who gets his groove back.)

Basically, David Ortiz is Jason Giambi with a better PR team and some hilarious Sportscenter commercials.  He's a Jim Rice who never bothered to play a crappy LF.

Why so low?  Because even a mediocre fielder provides more value to his team than a DH.

Overall, his odds are further lowered by the fact that the next several ballots are going to be stacked with very likely inductees (Randy Johnson, Pedro, Griffey Jr., Biggio, Bagwell, Piazza, Chipper, Thome, Pudge, Jeter, Ichiro) who will push back more borderline cases that are better than Ortiz's (Andruw, Rolen, Schilling, Raines, Mussina, Vlad, Smoltz, Larry Walker), plus the PED guys who won't fall off the ballot and will siphon votes even if they're still blackballed (Bonds, Clemens, Manny).

Not to mention his own PED link

chimp_ninja: Larry Walker

By the way, before someone shouts 'COORS', career road numbers:
Larry Walker: 1002 G,  .278/.370/.495
David Ortiz: 995 G, .267/.362/.535

Pretty comparable bat, and Larry was also a good baserunner (230 career SB) who played an excellent RF in a gigantic outfield.

He is an asshole. He did this to the dugout phone in Camden Yards last year and nearly took off his own teammate's head in the process.

Yeah, I never understood how people can buy into his big teddy bear "big papi" thing when he pulls crap like that and has a temper shorter than Roger Clemens

Except that Manny has not made an appearance yet.  He was to work at AAA Iowa and last was reported to still be in Arizona at Extended Spring Training.  Not much learning going on other than how to scam.

I've lost count of how many times David Ortiz has gotten a pass on acting like a complete prick.

It's cause he plays in Bahston. In Bahston they play the game the right way. Just ask the pink hats!
