Timid Goddess: Have you tried cooking with Truvia Baking Blend?  It tastes just like you used regular sugar, but only 1/4th the calories of regular sugar.  To substitute, just use half as much in the recipe instead of the regular sugar.

But how good is Truvia at putting out fires?

Good morning! Eli, like all cats, is a fearless protector of his human charges, even while they wander the dream realm. He'll always protect you. It's his JOB. On the scale of shiat that matters, that's right up there with placing protective layers of cat hair on everything and making sure you don't fall into the toilet and disappear into the sewer forever by fixing you in place with their steely gaze. Cats are awesome at their jobs, aren't they? :-D

My kid is never going to talk to me again. On the way to the humane society a police officer who knows us pulled up next to us, saw me cross myself and laughed. He was behind us at a light in a "tourist" area when I pulled myself out of the passenger side window screaming "I want to live!"
He hit the lights and siren, going on the PA after that " mr. Xxx. Get back in the car. Everyone has to deal with their teenager learning to drive". There was much mirth in the area. Even better, a scout mother we knew was there and handed me a prescription bottle winking. She had put tic tacs in it and said in a loud voice "demerol". I tilted the bottle and ate them all. The policeman again got on the PA telling me to get in the car, everyone needs to teach their kid how to drive. So, right now he is doing his shift at the humane society livid at me. But I did get a lot of laughs.

akimbotoo: lilyspad: I have a stoopy tech question. Whenever I respond to a post, I have to scroll way back up to where the post was to catch up, and sometimes I miss other people's posts! Can I do anything to change that? It's a pain in my arse!!!!

I figured out a way to get back to where I was faster. I do control "f" (for find) and type in a few words from the post I commented on. I then click the down arrow to find the phrase again and voila!

Yeah, I either do that, or open the comment in another tab to type so I don't lose my place in the origial thread.

lilyspad: Real Women Drink Akvavit: but Gogh has NO harness and NO leash

Try to start him out slow. Put it on him so he can get used to it around the house first. That way you can also be sure that it fits right before going outside with him. Good luck!

That's what I figured I'd do. I'm also going to look up leash training for cats to see if there are any tips I hadn't thought of, but I thought that once I got the harness on him and verified that it fit properly, I'd open the back door and then let him do his own thing while I hold the leash. He may think "escape!" and kind of forget the harness is there. The goal of course will be that in his mind harness = outside time and he loves outside time, so eventually he should love the harness as well. If he flops over or flips out - well, I'm not going to drag him around on the leash. I'll just let him set the pace, just like I did with his drinking fountain (which he was afraid of for a couple weeks, but now it is the only place he wants to get his water). I have always tried to let him decide when he was ready to deal with something or check something out - the only exceptions being vet visits and possibly baths, of course.

RWDA.... Sorry about your "adventure" with Gogh Beastie! Like you said, better to be mad at you, than not there.

I just had $40 post to one of my accounts from some internet thing or another and I still have $100 or so pending, so I think Gogh Beastie is getting a harness and leash today. I am just as responsible for his emotional well being as I am for his physical well being and since I'm not exactly going to starve any time soon, there is really no excuse to NOT stroll on up to the Target or PetSmart or whatever and spend it on trying to make mah boy a bit happier. I'd be a terrible person if I spent it on books or nail polish or even food for the humans. We've got plenty of that stuff around here, but Gogh has NO harness and NO leash! That simply will not do.

I'm hoping for this kind of experience:
img.fark.net
totally looks like my Gogh Beastie, too. So regal! King of the patio!

Realistically, I'll probably get this kind:

melaniekillingervowell.files.wordpress.com
which is how every cat I've ever cared for has reacted to a leash. Gogh Beastie is a very different kind of cat than any other I've ever cared for, though. We'll see.

It's so deeply upsetting to me even now this morning NOT that he tried to mangle me, but what it meant that he reacted that way. I know he's been wanting out and I've been making him extra spoiled because going out is a huge "No", but I didn't realize he was still that desperately unhappy being kept inside. That makes ME very, very upset. I'm going to do my very best to fix that, though. Hold on Gogh Beastie! Mommy will try and make it all better! I promise!

hawaiijenno: [img.fark.net image 555x491]Super long saga, feel free to skip as it's pet related but no cats involved.

shiat got real last Sunday night.  About 7:30pm I was upstairs changing into pajamas when I hear my husband yell, "Oh my God! The birds got outside!". i look out the window to see Jo sailing over the patio home next door. I ran downstairs & out the door to find Hank sitting on the ground. I scoop him up, throw him in a cage & go back out to find Super Panicked Man & try to figure out what the hell happened. Apparently he forgot that he had a bird on each shoulder when he decided to go out & check if the grill was cool enough to put away.  Jo apparently caught a bit of an updraft when she freaked out from going through the front door.

Now we're both trying to figure out if Jo is in the tree that my husband thinks she went into. Did I mention that he tends to panic?  After about an hour &' a half, we still can't see her in the super fleshed out Maple tree and we haven't heard a sound from her. Now, both birds have their wings clipped, so they can't fly but the can sort of glide so they don't drop like a stone but they can't really propel themselves upwards either. At this point, our neighbors know to keep an eye out for her so I put her cage out front with the hope that when she wants to go to bed she'll return to her 'house'.

After we go inside for a few minutes Jo starts yelling for us because she can't see us anymore. I go outside, husband is in the bathroom at this point, & I can see her about 15' up at the outside edge of the Maple tree.  I yell for my husband to get a ladder.  Now it's about 9pm & I'm barefoot, in boxer shorts & a tanktop & I'm about to try to climb a tree for the first time in 25 years.   I can get almost to the branch she's on, but I can't quite reach it to shake her out of it.   one of our neighbors loans us a fishing net, but I still can't reach her.   Now I'm out of ideas & I'm figuring that I'm going to wind up sleeping under the tre ...

I'm so sorry - I tend to visualize everything when reading so I kind of giggled at the visual I got out of that. I'm very glad that everyone is OK, including the probably incredibly remorseful hubby. I think whatever emotional trauma he has suffered watching YOUR emotional trauma and the sheer terror of knowing he was to blame for whatever happened is punishment enough. However, if I am wrong, make him take you somewhere awesome, like Disneyland (or wherever your idea of the best place ever may be). That's a huge boo-boo and demands a huge make up gesture if he does not seem appropriately remorseful and apologetic. I'd still cut him a little slack, though. After all - who hasn't done stupid stuff that almost got a family member or two killed before? At least everything turned out OK and you have a great story to tell - as do the guys who helped!

Please invest in a small fire extinguisher.
Trying to use flour is a very, very dangerous way to try
to put out a kitchen fire.
Flour is very flammable!
Especially when poured. The dust is what explodes when ignited.
Please, PLEASE, buy a real extinguisher.
/off soapbox

My mom and I were JUST talking about grain silo explosions and whatnot when I was cleaning up the stove. We must have sensed your post from afar because we both came to the same conclusion/remembered flour is probably a bad idea a little while ago. We kinda wondered how I'd gotten away with smothering fires with flour at least two or three times in the past without killing everyone, everywhere (or at least in a several block radius).

I *did* have a small fire extinguisher right by where we have the stand for the magical micro cooker thingamabob and where we keep the recycling bins. Somehow it disappeared during the Great Termite Wars of 2013. We had several odd things disappear during that time. Where they went, nobody knows, but the fire extinguisher I actually noticed was missing almost immediately, because I clean that part of the floor every time the recycling goes to the outside bins - so three or more times per week. I had to move the fire extinguisher to clean it properly, so when my hand automatically went to grab it and it was gone, I was all "Heyyyyy. Something is MISSING". Definitely got to get a new one, because while I do occasionally make messes while cooking, I am not known for accidentally starting fires because of them - probably because I always, always, always "cook clean". Obviously not everyone cooks clean, but the fact at least one person in this house also does not know how to use a dish rag to clean their own potentially flammable materials off of a stove when they're done cooking is more than a little worrisome.

gremlin1: My neighbors that moved in last summer are really bugging me this summer.
My dog Jack is antisocial and very protective of me and our property. I have "Beware of Dog" signs on my front door and on the gate to my back yard. Jack had an abusive history before he moved in with me 10 years ago.
I have tried everything to socialize him and have succeeded somewhat when he is off our property but you still can't touch me. He hasn't bitten anyone in 10 years , but I still worry.
When these people moved in with their children I warned them about Jack and told them not to let the kids try to pet him thru the fence and just ignore him if he barks.
If they have company or a picnic I make sure Jack is in the house, I don't mind that. If the kids are outside I make sure to go outside with Jack  in order to minimize the barking.
The backyards in our neighborhood are pretty big and my yard is fenced in.
My neighbors put up a swingset and sandbox in their yard 2ft from my fence, their yard is 90ft wide. Why would you put the toddler 2ft from the dog? They also put up a basketball hoop where any missed rebound balls are going to end up in my fenced in yard. Are these people hoping to eliminate their kids and have me get the blame for it?

Tie a sign to the top of the fence, that will hang down to kid-eye height on their side that says all the parts you want to keep, keep on your side of the fence.  tie another one at parent-eye height that says I'm keeping everything that lands on my side of the fence, including fingers...

hawaiijenno: [img.fark.net image 555x491]Super long saga, feel free to skip as it's pet related but no cats involved.

shiat got real last Sunday night.

That had to be so horrible for you. I'm glad things turned out alright.
Will we be seeing this on the FARK main page ,because I can't believe that this will not end up in the news somewhere.

My husband decides that he's going to call dispatch and see if he can get the local fire volunteers to come out with an extension ladder. I work for a fire dept, so I'm not optimistic about this plan, and I know that once this goes out on the radio I'm never going to hear the end of this.

Dispatch pages put the call to the local Chief, who agrees to cone out & see what the deal is.  How often do you get a call for a bird stuck in a tree?  Curiosity got him to come out. A few of the guys show up  & they decide that an extension ladder isn't going to work based on where she is in the tree. Now it's about 10pm at this point. They decide to bring in their quint with the arial & use the platform to get under her & get her.  They raise the guy up and, of course, as soon as he reaches for Jo she just scoots down the branch out of his reach.  After 2 more grabs, he just shakes her out of the tree.  As she can't fly,  she starts flapping wildly while falling (proving that we aren't lying, she really can't fly). I was able to catch her in the fishing net & throw her in the cage. Of course the guys take some pictures with her because they need some photographic evidence that they got called out to get a bird out of a tree.

I still haven't decided what to press for, but there's no doubt that my husband owes me big for this one.

Well, I should open up RWDA's Little Shop of "I Told You So". It's like a psychic, but strictly common sense delivered with a bit of snark. You are obligated to leave a post dated check for double the initial amount when you leave, so when I am proven absolutely correct I can write "I Told You So" on the back, sign it and cash it. You're welcome.

Anyway, we've had two mountain lion sightings out here in the past two days, because DUH, we're in a drought and of course they're coming down to where there are things like swimming pools and rivers and stuff. I totally called it months ago, because it's happened before. For some odd reason I'm the only one who remembers this stuff (though I'll forget what I walked into the garage for to bring into the house, but everyone with a garage does that, right?). My mom is scared now because she thinks she's going to look in our back yard and see a mountain lion going after one of our wayward kittehs. We've actually had sightings all around us since April that I know of, she is just hearing of the latest one, though.

There's nothing I can do about Hisss! because that sucker is wilder than the mountain lion probably is - the big cat would probably run if it saw me and go find its own food, Hisss! acts like s/he will eat my face off if I don't hurry up with the kibble. Lord Earl the Grey I could just grab and throw in the bathroom for a few days if there was a mountain lion too terribly close to my house. I don't know really what else to do though. Well, other than tell my mom to chill the fark out. I dunno what else to do. I don't think they make mountain lion repellent I can load the Super Soaker up with and then spray every cat in the neighborhood. I think it's best to just keep the back yard well lit and hope any thirsty mountain lion visiting the 'burbs finds the neighbors with the pool instead of us.

Here, have a cat. I gotta go fix a dinner or something.

laulaja, that is no random black guy - that is Shaq! Shaquille O'Neal is about 7 feet and over 300 pounds of "get dafuq outta my way" on the basketball court (now retired from play, but talks at ya on the TeeVee about it). He played for the Los Angeles Lakers for a few years and that was the only time I actually went to a game even though I had moved up to SacTown by then. It just cracked me up to see him lumbering up the court paying no mind to the "little" guys between him and the hoop. *thud* *thud* *thud* *reaches up, puts ball through hoop* *thud* *thud* *thud* in the other direction. It was just too funny to me. It also got me thrown into a swimming pool by some acquaintances for cheering for the Lakers (but mostly just Shaq) at Arco Arena - which at the time was the Sacramento Kings' home court. Such a traitor - and to my own adopted home town even! :-D

Lola wasn't impressed with me at all.
Or it could have been her nemesis that she was glaring at before I got in her face...
[farm6.staticflickr.com image 480x640]
Probably both.
Sadie and Lola don't get along. Yet they're right in each other's space. Frenemies for life.

Your girls are so very pretty, so of course they don't get along! My Niki & Chloe didn't really get along well for the first year we had them. All it took was us moving 900+ miles away and they spent 2+ days in the same carrier. Ended up at least tolerating each other. I never saw them clean the other one, but at least they could sit side by side & not cause trouble. I love Lola's expression, and Sadie's eyebrows and white tip of the tail are adorable!

Thank you!
They used to get along pretty well until they grew up and Lola filled out her frame while Sadie is just as skinny as she was when she was a kitten.
At least they haven't tried to kill each other while I'm at work.
Most of the time they're trying not to get ran over when Sam has one of his catnip flashbacks. He gets a major case of the zoomies and uses the inside of the house as his own racetrack.
You simply haven't lived until you've had a cat fly past your head.

I won't get able to get anyone to help me because no one else wants Gogh Beastie mad at them. I have seriously had them come right out and say that to me, so I'm on my own. I had thought about protective clothing if I have to get in the tub with him and pretty much ruled out the ol' skirted swim suit because he would not appreciate its retro goodness - and as you said, I could get hurt. Luckily, metal head wenches and goth chicks have similar taste in clothing, so I *know* I have some very thick, ankle length skirts around here somewhere that are left over from my younger, more social days. I just need to find one that isn't an embroidered brocade or have a lace overlay. I know my fat butt ain't fitting in those leather pants, but the heavy, thick skirts needed to go to the cleaner anyway and should offer me a better measure of protection than pretty much anything else I own right now.

Maybe I'll even do my makeup first, then I can re-enact the tragedy of a lady of olden times falling off a sailing vessel and drowning due to the weight of her clothing, pulling her down into the dark, watery abyss - but with extra morbid flair and an abundance of cat hair.

Unless I buy a leather butcher's apron and a football helmet, of course.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: The Gogh Beastie still has not had a baff. I tried again last night and once again ended up with water all over the bathroom and a deep appreciation for laminate flooring rather than the more commonly found in suburban homes type of carpet everyone else in this neighborhood seems to have. I swear the water just rolls right off of him, because he's a Wegie mix. Whatever he is mixed with hates water, because Wegies usually like the water, but not my fuzzbucket dude. He will have none of that bullshiat, he looks and smells just fine thankyewverymuch you stoopid hoomin and I can go die of head trauma on the bathroom floor after he somehow manages to fling or kick or whatever his bottle of shampoo at my face. Jerk. I might have to climb in the tub with him for the next try because I seriously can't manage him anymore from the outside of the tub. My own health took such a quick downward slide I can't even bathe my own cat - something I NEVER thought would happen, but it did. Dangit. Ah, well. I'll keep trying, I guess. I feel horrible that he gets so upset, but he really needs a baff!

[kellene23.files.wordpress.com image 500x377]

My son and I tag-teamed our cat by bathing her in the tub/shower enclosure, fortunately the kind with sliding glass doors. My son would put on a pair of swim trunks and an old t-shirt, get in the shower/tub area and run some water in the tub for the initial shampoo application. I'd hand off Tilly to him (and make sure the bathroom door was shut) & close the shower doors. He would bath her, then rinse her off in the shower, then hand her off to me where I'd bundle her up in a big fluffy towel.

Good morning Caturday folks, it's another happy day here at work on Caturday.  New tracking system launched yesterday, and I have to train 25 people on it, most of whom don't listen to directions.  So yesterday was a great deal of

"This doesn't work" "Did you read the big message I sent saying how to get it working?" "Yeah I did" *trundle over* "Obviously not, because point number 2 tells you how to fix this." "No it doesn't" *death stare*

At least the training people today should be better, since less of them usually need high 5's, in the face, with a chair, made of steel...

Oh well, on with the kittehs, and the happiest wishes for the ongoing (or is it even started yet) Sherpa trek.  Also happy thoughts to all kittehs and kitteh slaves.

See, what had happened was... I was driving along a road and this little kitten was in the middle of the road. so OF COURSE I stopped. This little one isn't in the best of shape, but so far he's doing ok. Conjunctivitis to the point of possible blindness best case scenario and worse case, loss of his eyes. URI, not surprising... and all the other stuff associated with... well... strays... so, we have a new addition. Caturday family meet Clarence III or whatever name he might come in to.. : )

Quick check-in & check-out.
Long day that started first thing with a tumble to the floor.
I spent about 45 minutes trying to get back up.
Left knee is boogered something terrible.
The medicine says it's now time to go to bed unless I want to spend more time on the floor.

I think it's about time to post myself for sale on Craigslist before depreciation gets the better of me.
Something like...
"For Sale or Trade - Fat, pasty, Santa Claus lookalike with broken sense of humor. Make offer. Yo-Yo's & turtles considered"

Here's to wishing Sherpa a Bon Voyage, and a good night to the rest of all y'all.

Yeah, I can't wait. I've been using a temporary (flipper) for a year and a half now. They're not really intended to be used that long. I still have six months to go because today's festivities wiped out my dental coverage for the year (and my wallet.)

Lsherm: lilyspad: Lsherm: Happy Caturday!  Jasper, new kitten as of January, is only 11 months old and is suffering from "resorption" which means his gums are eating his teeth.  He's getting half his teeth pulled next week before his first birthday, and that makes me a little sad.  The vet swears cats don't need teeth to live, but I'm a bit pissed off about it.  Jasper was a feral rescue kitten, and apparently this happens sometimes.

Here he is assuming the position for sleep last night, and it kills me because he's going to be miserable on Tuesday, but the vet assures me he will be better in the long run.  Still, so long, Jasper teeth:

He is such a sweet, sweet kitten.  He'll insist on butt rubbing the Kindle if I'm reading, but after he takes his spot right under my armpit to sleep.  He may never forgive me after next Tuesday.

I've never heard of that. I'm sure it will take him some time to adjust, but he'll be fine. I used to have a cat that lost all it's teeth (naturally, I guess) but was very healthy and ate like a horse! I'm sure your vet will help you through it, and give meds for the kitteh! Give him extra skritches from me!

I never had, either. It's even rarer in young cats, but a barn cat can have viral infections that cause it before they are adopted, and there's nothing you can do about it.  The vet was more worried about me putting him down than taking out the teeth.  Obviously, I'm not putting him down.  But we've been doing everything under the sun to try and keep his teeth (I "brush" his teeth with a solution once a day with a Q-tip) and it hasn't helped.  His gums are literally attacking his teeth.  It's like feline HIV but only for teeth.  I'm not happy about the solution, but if he pulls through then he's just a toothless kitten with a good 13-14 years ahead of him.

We'll watch "How to Train Your Dragon" together and I'll make inappropriate jokes he won't understand.

Yes! I cringed when I read her post. At the very least keep a large box of baking soda on hand. I have a fire extinguisher in my kitchen and was very glad that my husband had insisted in on it when we had a fire. Went out and bought a replacement right away afterward.

Hello Family!
*waves madly*

With everything I am going through - I TOTALLY forgot that it was Gremlin's 3rd Birthday June 3rd :O
I asked for any recent pictures but she doesn't have any so instead I shall do a little belated Happy Birfday
to my biggest fluffy brat whom I miss dearly but is doing so much better with his new slave.
fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net
The very first day I lay my eyes on him - I knew he was the perfect companion for Ben Hurr :3

Another typical sleeping pose for Gremlin :3 look at those toe tufts!
scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net
And my new personal favourite picture of him at his new place - my how big and more beautiful he has become :3

And now I just looked at the calendar and felt a twinge in my heart...
Yesterday - June 19th, would have been Ben Hurr's 3rd birthday too if he had survived :(
So here are some of my favourites of my little meat ball head, my Benners - RIP

Timid Goddess: *** Warning, long story about cats, a toddler and a bird ***

*snip*

You and your mini rescuer of small critters are AWESOME! I am proud of your wee one as well. My son is pushing 30 and he can still come up with a dozen ways to drag his feet about stuff he doesn't feel like doing (though putting on his shoes is no longer as high on the list as it was when he was a little guy). What is it with little kids and shoes, anyway?

Good job, Tiny Timid Goddess! (You too, mom!)

Timid Goddess: Have you tried cooking with Truvia Baking Blend?  It tastes just like you used regular sugar, but only 1/4th the calories of regular sugar.  To substitute, just use half as much in the recipe instead of the regular sugar.

I have not. I am one of those real cream, real butter, whole eggs kinda gals. When I was edumakated about Egg Beaters I was shocked at how tasty they were. Growing up in the '70s - the last time white sugar was so viciously maligned it wasn't even allowed in our house and I had to sneak candy from friends' houses - made me incredibly resistant to artificial anything. No one will never convince me that nutritional yeast tastes like cheese and that carob is exotic and expensive chocolate enjoyed by European royalty, either. That's what the makers of all these things are up against with me - spending a good decade being lied to by her own mother, because everything that is tasty is "bad" for you and will kill you DEAD faster than the Zodiac killer. I no longer believe any of the "better for you and tastes just as good", because like fat chicks everywhere, I remember when people mess with my enjoyment of my food. (Even if I wasn't fat when it happened)

I will admit I have pondered using Truvia, but I am a bit concerned about the impact on texture, especially in baked goods. Sugar isn't just used for flavoring, but also has a lot impact on the overall texture of the finished product. If it weren't so darn expensive, I might try a few things with it, but with my finances the way they are right now, I can't afford to experiment as much as I'd like to (and I'm too tired all the time anyway, so *shrug*).

BTW, Oreos were on sale, as were the Wheat Thins. I got a package of each, because I like Wheat Thins (which are actually quite fattening) and I'd never had the berry Oreos before. I deem the berry Oreos "tasty".

Now I gotta go clean up the mess from putting out the fire last night. I'm amazed at how well I managed to contain the flour mess. It could have been much, much worse - especially if I didn't get the fire out so quickly!

Sky King!

CSB time...
My grandfather (mom's dad) used to own the airport in Brownsburg, IN.
My uncle (mom's brother) had his pilots license and ended up being the Great Lakes factory rep for Cessna out of Rockford, IL.
As the factory rep, he had a stable of Cessna aircraft at his disposal for demonstration purposes.
One year, over spring vacation, we went up to visit him and he took us kids to the airport and took each of us up for rides.
(Between my grandfather and my uncle, I've flown since I was about 3 years old.)
This time, my uncle had one of those newfangled Polaroid cameras that produced (B&W) pictures in a minute.
Of course, you had to use this smelly squeegee thing to "finish the picture" and prevent it from over-developing.

He took a shot of me half standing on the wing/in the cabin of a Cessna 310, just like Sky King's!
It had the same paint job and everything!

I brought it back with me and took it to school for Show & Tell.
Geez-O-Pete!
All the other guys wished they were me, and all the girls wanted to touch me because I had been in a plane like Sky Kings!!!

Best spring vacation ever!

Maverick's my personal favorite, but Thursday nights, they have four solid hours of Magnum P.I.

As my old mum used to say, that's a face that'd get a sandwich at anyone's door.

I think you're right about the plotting though - Griffin is obviously a false name, have you checked if he's got a Bolivian passport tucked away behind the litter box?
