lilyspad: Real Women Drink Akvavit: but Gogh has NO harness and NO leash

Try to start him out slow. Put it on him so he can get used to it around the house first. That way you can also be sure that it fits right before going outside with him. Good luck!

That's what I figured I'd do. I'm also going to look up leash training for cats to see if there are any tips I hadn't thought of, but I thought that once I got the harness on him and verified that it fit properly, I'd open the back door and then let him do his own thing while I hold the leash. He may think "escape!" and kind of forget the harness is there. The goal of course will be that in his mind harness = outside time and he loves outside time, so eventually he should love the harness as well. If he flops over or flips out - well, I'm not going to drag him around on the leash. I'll just let him set the pace, just like I did with his drinking fountain (which he was afraid of for a couple weeks, but now it is the only place he wants to get his water). I have always tried to let him decide when he was ready to deal with something or check something out - the only exceptions being vet visits and possibly baths, of course.

Yes! I cringed when I read her post. At the very least keep a large box of baking soda on hand. I have a fire extinguisher in my kitchen and was very glad that my husband had insisted in on it when we had a fire. Went out and bought a replacement right away afterward.

Hello Family!
*waves madly*

With everything I am going through - I TOTALLY forgot that it was Gremlin's 3rd Birthday June 3rd :O
I asked for any recent pictures but she doesn't have any so instead I shall do a little belated Happy Birfday
to my biggest fluffy brat whom I miss dearly but is doing so much better with his new slave.

The very first day I lay my eyes on him - I knew he was the perfect companion for Ben Hurr :3

Another typical sleeping pose for Gremlin :3 look at those toe tufts!

And my new personal favourite picture of him at his new place - my how big and more beautiful he has become :3

And now I just looked at the calendar and felt a twinge in my heart...
Yesterday - June 19th, would have been Ben Hurr's 3rd birthday too if he had survived :(
So here are some of my favourites of my little meat ball head, my Benners - RIP

*** Warning, long story about cats, a toddler and a bird ***

Wednesday after getting home from an evening swim lesson for the little one, followed by heating and eating dinner, I heard a loud and repeated chirping.  I followed the sound while the little one followed me and found at least two, if not three, of the cats in the garage, along with a temporarily hidden source of the loud chirping.

Grabbed one of the cats, gently tossed him into the bathroom, closed the door and grabbed a towel on the way back to the garage.  With the little one watching from the doorway, after a fumble or two, I managed to pull the second cat away with one hand and toss the towel over the bird with the other hand.
So now I have a frightened bird that I am pretty sure is a juvenile (very short tail) and possibly a robin that I have barely seen wrapped in a towel against my chest.  Not knowing how badly or if it is hurt at all, I go to my computer and find out that the WildCare facility will be closed in 15 minutes.  Problem?  Yes, it is over 15 minutes to get there.  I find their number, ask if they will still be open if I get toddler and bird in the car, they say sure.

I was SO PROUD of my little girl!  I briefly explained we had to help the bird and she need to get shoes on (she was already dress from swim lessons) and get in the car "quick, quick, quick".  She immediately got her shoes on while I was stuffing the bird, towel and all, into the cat carrier and getting the door shut.  It is not uncommon for her to get stubborn about getting shoes on, not this time.  She also got in her car seat quick enough I didn't need to encourage her, another frequent point of potential wasted time.
Once she was in and buckled up, the carrier with the bird went in the back seat between her and the door.  We talked about the bird, about birds in general, about how birds talk (that one chirped), about how we don't want wild animals to know humans are helping them so they can go back to living as wild animals and so on on the trip.

We got to WildCare, I got the bird out, set him on top of the trunk long enough to get the little one out of the car.  I unbuckle the car seat, she gets out.  Again, she was helping by going relatively fast.  I told her where we were going (it's out in the middle of nowhere and 15 minutes after the official drop off closing time so no cars) and we're off with the bird.  Once inside, she carefully waited, for some reason there were tons of boxes scattered everywhere and she didn't knock any over.  One of the volunteers examined the bird while the little one and I watched.  It was a juvenile robin, it was hurt but not badly.  After a few antibiotics and a bit of growing he should be ready for release.

I am really proud that my little girl was ready to drop everything and cooperate so well with me to help a poor bird that was in the wrong place at the wrong time.  As for my part, it was just doing what needed to be done to help a critter that needed help that I was able to give.

Iff'n you live on a wooded property, then out in the woods..will explain..

We had a mummified cat fall out of our ceiling when we first moved in.. (house had been vacant fer 10+ years..  We gutted it and are rebuilding..)

I took the cat out (was the only one who would touch it..heh..) to the back-woods..  We have 2 acres of property backed by a State easement and then the local Cemetery..

..placed him (in the easement area) in the center of a 3-tree growth with plenty of center space..  Open to Nature..as it should be..  Doubt he'd fault me fer my choice..  Take that mousie out into any 'woods' you have nearby and lovingly set him down..pick a significant spot, if you wish..  Nature will call its own home and the world will turn as it should..

"Burial" is a human thing..  Our beasties need none of it..given the proper area..  =)

Well, I hit the PetSmart or PetCo or PetMe or whatever it is up the street from me and a couple of other places and could not find a kitty harness I liked for my Gogh Beastie. I looked at the goggie harnesses and found that cat vs dog sizing is kinda like women's vs men's sizing, and I still wasn't thrilled with my options. Anywhooo, I got Gogh Beastie's measurements and then spent a couple of hours on the internet doing research about and looking for a harness for him. Ladies and Gents, puppehs and kittehs, pidery-piders and little ratty-ratties and even pet rocks, I give you The Kitty Holster.

I tracked it down on Amazon to read reviews and then ordered it through Amazon Smile to help support Little Mews (YAY!). I got him the red bandana one, as that was the brightest colored one for sale through Amazon Smile and if he gets away from me while wearing his snazzy new vest, I want to be able to spot him more easily. It will be here between June 30 and July 3, so another week or so. Hang in there Gogh Beastie, baby! You will be the most awesomest attired cat in the WHOLE NEIGHBORHOOD! Outside, even!

Quite a few of the reviewers said after the cat got used to the kitty holster, the cat actually LIKED wearing it. I was hoping that Gogh Beastie would associate wearing a harness with going outside, so it would cease being a big deal after a while, and according to other reviewers, that's exactly what happens. One guy even said that by day 9 (IIRC) his cat threw a fit when he tried to take the harness off of him. I hope Gogh Beastie adjusts that quickly, then I can just buy extra sunscreen and a big, floppy hat and read outside while he sniffs the shrubbery, which I think is the cat version of reading the news or maybe even gossip.

I feel a lot better now that it's on the way here so he can go out. I'd feel a LOT better if it were already here and we were at the "yes you ARE wearing that, young man!" stage. I'm super excited, a tad impatient and can hardly wait to start the Battle for Harness Supremacy. (I will win - eventually)

Even cooler.  Thanx fer the source pic...

That movie has always given me just insane giggle fits. Then that goth/techno/whatever the hell band from SanFran did a song that was heavy with the sampling from that movie and the giggling got WORSE because now I can visualize a gothopotamus floating by in the foreground of all the movie scenes, doing what I am told is "dancing". Insane giggling and I kinda go hand in hand anyway, but still - that movie/song combo just sends it into the stratosphere.

Pic of the Kitty Holster style I got for the Gogh Beastie as modeled by an unknown cat:
www.supercoolpets.com
If it works out and he uses it a lot, I'll order another one or two straight from the company so we can have fancier designs and maybe even matching outfits (as far as color schemes go). YAY!

akimbotoo: Zoo's are a great resource for information! I called the LA Zoo years ago when I found a California King Snake with severe mouth rot. She was 4' long but only weighed 8 oz. She should have weighed at least 1 1/2 lbs. She hadn't eaten in so long her bones were soft. They told me how to treat it & how to feed her until she was strong enough to eat on her own. One month of feeding her 2 pinky mice every other day, antibiotics & calcium & digestive enzymes & mouth cleaning twice a day and she started eating on her own. I had her for over 15 years. I named her Ssssylvia. :D

First bolded:  You are "Good People"..  My Kate thanks you for your time and concern..
Second bolded:  ..gimmie a min..tryin' t'figger out a word better than "Awesome," here..  ;)

Most folk take their local/regional zoos for granted..

If you poke a tiny bit..or go just one level deeper on the site..both the Buffalo and Toronto Zoos have (clearly indicated) what boils down to a "Help..!  My house pet is injured/sick/ate something bad/acting wrong" link that is managed, staffed and monitored by Zoo Staff..

They do not care if that pet isn't a rhino, giraffe or condor..  They care that there's an animal in distress and they might know how to help..

Support your local zoo and *use them as a resource*..!  They love nothing more, at all, than being able to help..able to help *any* animal...

You might want to try what they call a shedding (or maybe it was de-shedding?) blade.
I got one for Wimsey...he's a short-hair, but has an incredibly thick coat. His Kitty Superpower is projectile shedding...he can shoot fur up to 3 feet away.

OK, not really...but it sure seems like it.

The shedding blade really does a good job...but when it recommends using it outside...they ain't kidding.

RWDA.... Sorry about your "adventure" with Gogh Beastie! Like you said, better to be mad at you, than not there.

I just had $40 post to one of my accounts from some internet thing or another and I still have $100 or so pending, so I think Gogh Beastie is getting a harness and leash today. I am just as responsible for his emotional well being as I am for his physical well being and since I'm not exactly going to starve any time soon, there is really no excuse to NOT stroll on up to the Target or PetSmart or whatever and spend it on trying to make mah boy a bit happier. I'd be a terrible person if I spent it on books or nail polish or even food for the humans. We've got plenty of that stuff around here, but Gogh has NO harness and NO leash! That simply will not do.

I'm hoping for this kind of experience:
img.fark.net
totally looks like my Gogh Beastie, too. So regal! King of the patio!

Realistically, I'll probably get this kind:

melaniekillingervowell.files.wordpress.com
which is how every cat I've ever cared for has reacted to a leash. Gogh Beastie is a very different kind of cat than any other I've ever cared for, though. We'll see.

It's so deeply upsetting to me even now this morning NOT that he tried to mangle me, but what it meant that he reacted that way. I know he's been wanting out and I've been making him extra spoiled because going out is a huge "No", but I didn't realize he was still that desperately unhappy being kept inside. That makes ME very, very upset. I'm going to do my very best to fix that, though. Hold on Gogh Beastie! Mommy will try and make it all better! I promise!

OMGs! My son let the Gogh Beastie slip past him out into the back yard and I had to go do cat retrieval. I know he is not happy being cooped up in the house all the time, but ever since Moo Kitty Sissy Doodles passed away, we've kept him inside for his own safety. He gets out once in a while because he's shifty, but he's not allowed to come and go like he used to be able to do. Right now though, with mountain lion sightings nearby and it getting dark out, it's not like I can just say "OK, you win this time, knock on my window when you're ready to come back in" - which is the usual way it happens when he gets out on accident.

I had to crawl under a tarp covered picnic table and grab him. He screamed and growled and hissed and swatted and tried to bite me! He's NEVER acted out so horribly and viciously like that before, not even when I've tried bathing him or when I put him in the carrier to go to the vet. NEVER. This went far beyond complaining and trying to run. This was just a massive, rage filled "F*CK YOU - NO". Now I feel so bad for my little dude. He wants out SO BAD, but it's just not safe for him. I think I'll see if I can't get him a harness and leash. He'll not be happy about it, I'm sure, but when he figures out he can go OUTSIDE with mommy or brother or grandma if he's got it on maybe he'll warm up to it.

I also broke a nail getting him out from under that table. Better a broken nail and some scraped up knees and scratched up arms and spiderwebs in my hair than a dead cat. I can fix the nail, the knees and arms will heal and the spiderwebs came out first thing. Nothing to be done about a dead cat except hurt inside and I don't like that.

I better go give my boy some apology treats. Here, have some more Bucky D Katt

Spiralmonkey: Lsherm: lilyspad: Lsherm: Happy Caturday!  Jasper, new kitten as of January, is only 11 months old and is suffering from "resorption" which means his gums are eating his teeth.  He's getting half his teeth pulled next week before his first birthday, and that makes me a little sad.  The vet swears cats don't need teeth to live, but I'm a bit pissed off about it.  Jasper was a feral rescue kitten, and apparently this happens sometimes.

Here he is assuming the position for sleep last night, and it kills me because he's going to be miserable on Tuesday, but the vet assures me he will be better in the long run.  Still, so long, Jasper teeth:

He is such a sweet, sweet kitten.  He'll insist on butt rubbing the Kindle if I'm reading, but after he takes his spot right under my armpit to sleep.  He may never forgive me after next Tuesday.

I've never heard of that. I'm sure it will take him some time to adjust, but he'll be fine. I used to have a cat that lost all it's teeth (naturally, I guess) but was very healthy and ate like a horse! I'm sure your vet will help you through it, and give meds for the kitteh! Give him extra skritches from me!

I never had, either. It's even rarer in young cats, but a barn cat can have viral infections that cause it before they are adopted, and there's nothing you can do about it.  The vet was more worried about me putting him down than taking out the teeth.  Obviously, I'm not putting him down.  But we've been doing everything under the sun to try and keep his teeth (I "brush" his teeth with a solution once a day with a Q-tip) and it hasn't helped.  His gums are literally attacking his teeth.  It's like feline HIV but only for teeth.  I'm not happy about the solution, but if he pulls through then he's just a toothless kitten with a good 13-14 years ahead of him.

We'll watch "How to Train Your Dragon" together and I'll make inappropriate jokes he won't understand.

Well...
Yesterday was quite the momentous occasion.
I went to my friend and mentor's Wedding yesterday.
It was the first gay wedding I've been too.
Not only did they both wear their own clans kilts, but they looked amazing!
And totally cute.
You could just feel the pure happiness, love, and positivity emanating from these two.
As to be expected it was a completely emotional time for everyone. Not a dry eye anywhere.
I could not be happier for the both of them.

I was not surprised to see I was one of only 4 women there either.
Pretty sure I was the only straight person there too hahahah.
Doesn't matter at all though - to be a part of such an amazing event, and getting to take part
of traditional scottish and celtic wedding traditions was pretty darn cool.

And then I get home today to see my email full of wonderful things from such wonderful amazing people!
Thank you to everyone!!!
I may just get through this yet!

tigerose: Taking a short break from cleaning. House is mostly presentable, with the exception of my son's stuff..books and papers every where frm his trip. We won't discuss the bedroom..needs a shovel.

I need to clean the Super Secret Lair of Ultimate Doom pretty badly. I've got a pile of boxes in one corner that I saved for shipping things, but I've not felt well enough to do any of my Happytime Surprise Mail packages in forever. I've also not really done too many internet auctions or trading lately, so there's really no need for them all. Now that there's that big ol' pile, it's like "dude, that is way too much to deal with right now" and I take a nap instead. I think that's called "procrastination" and I've been doing it for at least a month. Eventually I'll clear it out, though. Then I'll need one of the exact size I threw out. That's just how those things go. :-/

RadicalEd: Looking for advice, fellow Caturdayers!

We'll be moving from an apartment to a house here in the next month, but there isn't an easy place to put the litter box. I've been looking at hiding the box solutions, such as repurposing a cabinet or trunk to hide it in (have to find one first). Or we might be able to repurpose one of the cabinets in the second bathroom. Does anyone have any experience doing this? My biggest concern is that we use wheat litter and they somehow track it EVERYWHERE despite having an extra long nappy mat to try to grab it from their paws.

Also the smell... My little girl manages to make the most horrendous smell and never cover it up, so I'm wary about repurposing a bench or cabinet that would go near a main room/juncture and just have it smell all the time. There's also a faux planter on Amazon that the box hides in, but again, mess and smell. Just curious if anyone else has done something similar and their results!

My hubby built a huge litterbox under a counter in our laundry room & used a computer fan to draw the air to outside through a corner of the garage. No smell!

laulaja, that is no random black guy - that is Shaq! Shaquille O'Neal is about 7 feet and over 300 pounds of "get dafuq outta my way" on the basketball court (now retired from play, but talks at ya on the TeeVee about it). He played for the Los Angeles Lakers for a few years and that was the only time I actually went to a game even though I had moved up to SacTown by then. It just cracked me up to see him lumbering up the court paying no mind to the "little" guys between him and the hoop. *thud* *thud* *thud* *reaches up, puts ball through hoop* *thud* *thud* *thud* in the other direction. It was just too funny to me. It also got me thrown into a swimming pool by some acquaintances for cheering for the Lakers (but mostly just Shaq) at Arco Arena - which at the time was the Sacramento Kings' home court. Such a traitor - and to my own adopted home town even! :-D

Still eating Jello here at casa de Yobbery
I woke up this morning with very swollen salivary glands. I decided to check the internet to see if I it was nothing to worry about or if I had five minutes to live....because we all know there is no middle ground on the internet.

Internet said I had five minutes to live. I thought it a would be a good idea to get hold of someone. Fortunately the surgeon's office had Saturday hours. It isn't something that happens often and they wanted me to come in so they could look. Turns out everything is fine....was just probably some kuck from the healing process that caused the ducts to clog. Swelling went down and everything is fine now.

I'm going for solid food tomorrow.

Everyone, meet Hisss!, mah new feral kitteh.

i1084.photobucket.com

Hisss! showed up right after Moo Kitty Sissy Doodles died. I think she or he was floating around the area but just wouldn't come in the yard because of Moo. I'd seen it around and, like Lord Earl the Grey of Kitteh, thought it had a home because it never really hung out. Now that Moo isn't always running off intruders, it comes right up to the door and begs. When I first realized s/he was a homeless kitteh I thought "Oh, how cute. Another stray who is begging and crying tiny cries for food from me. :-/ Let me not be a total twatwaffle and FEED THIS ONE TOO BECAUSE I HAVE SO MUCH FARKIN' MONEY" so that's what I did. Well, Hisss! is called "Hisss!" because s/he is growing bolder with the begging and hanging around the sliding glass door when I open it to put some kibble out there, I actually heard that tiny cry for food. It is not a tiny cry at all, it is the cat version of a "feed me or I'll cut you, biatch". S/he comes right up to that door, hisses at me through it (which I couldn't hear with the door closed), I grab fuds and open the door and the cat starts with a low growl before hissing again - at least same expression s/he had on its little face when I just saw hit's mouth opening but couldn't hear it. Once I step outside, s/he runs a bit of a ways away, but comes back for the kibble once I'm back in the house.

Very good lookin' cat. Creepy, too. Those eyes never leave you when s/he is living up to his/her name. Instead of "how are you today kitteh? are youse hungered? you want some kibbles?" in my sweet little sing-song talking to critters voice, I'm going start saying things like "what's your name, kitteh?" "Hisss!" I totally have a talking cat in my yard then, right? Right. Never mind it is threatening my life.

Also, that pic reminds me that patio needs cleaning. I'm going to go ahead and give my old beater board to the kid around the corner - I'm pretty sure I mentioned that here last week, or that I had at least considered the notion. When I first thought of giving that board to that particular kid, my mom said I need to ask his dad if was OK first. I did mention something to the dude in passing and he said something about how the kid has to "earn it". I'm going to see if it's cool if I have him clean off the back patio and wash our windows in exchange for the board. It's too hot for me outside, but that one corner of the patio is pretty messy and our windows do need washing out there pretty badly. I'll have his dad come over and see if I need to add something else or if that's cool. Should be win-win.

Seriously, I'm really calling on all my luck, and the luck of others, that this goes through.  Our Alien is a sweet kid (kid from my perspective) and deserves better in life than what has happened to her.  The more who can help her, the bigger a shot she has at beating the odds and going on to a happier phase of her life.

Bathia_Mapes: Make certain you have clothing on if you decide to get in the tub with your cat. Even the most normally laid-back (and our Tilly was generally a shy, timid kitty) cat can go full freakout when water is applied. If you can get someone to help you, that's even better.

I won't get able to get anyone to help me because no one else wants Gogh Beastie mad at them. I have seriously had them come right out and say that to me, so I'm on my own. I had thought about protective clothing if I have to get in the tub with him and pretty much ruled out the ol' skirted swim suit because he would not appreciate its retro goodness - and as you said, I could get hurt. Luckily, metal head wenches and goth chicks have similar taste in clothing, so I *know* I have some very thick, ankle length skirts around here somewhere that are left over from my younger, more social days. I just need to find one that isn't an embroidered brocade or have a lace overlay. I know my fat butt ain't fitting in those leather pants, but the heavy, thick skirts needed to go to the cleaner anyway and should offer me a better measure of protection than pretty much anything else I own right now.

Maybe I'll even do my makeup first, then I can re-enact the tragedy of a lady of olden times falling off a sailing vessel and drowning due to the weight of her clothing, pulling her down into the dark, watery abyss - but with extra morbid flair and an abundance of cat hair.

Unless I buy a leather butcher's apron and a football helmet, of course.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: The Gogh Beastie still has not had a baff. I tried again last night and once again ended up with water all over the bathroom and a deep appreciation for laminate flooring rather than the more commonly found in suburban homes type of carpet everyone else in this neighborhood seems to have. I swear the water just rolls right off of him, because he's a Wegie mix. Whatever he is mixed with hates water, because Wegies usually like the water, but not my fuzzbucket dude. He will have none of that bullshiat, he looks and smells just fine thankyewverymuch you stoopid hoomin and I can go die of head trauma on the bathroom floor after he somehow manages to fling or kick or whatever his bottle of shampoo at my face. Jerk. I might have to climb in the tub with him for the next try because I seriously can't manage him anymore from the outside of the tub. My own health took such a quick downward slide I can't even bathe my own cat - something I NEVER thought would happen, but it did. Dangit. Ah, well. I'll keep trying, I guess. I feel horrible that he gets so upset, but he really needs a baff!

[kellene23.files.wordpress.com image 500x377]

My son and I tag-teamed our cat by bathing her in the tub/shower enclosure, fortunately the kind with sliding glass doors. My son would put on a pair of swim trunks and an old t-shirt, get in the shower/tub area and run some water in the tub for the initial shampoo application. I'd hand off Tilly to him (and make sure the bathroom door was shut) & close the shower doors. He would bath her, then rinse her off in the shower, then hand her off to me where I'd bundle her up in a big fluffy towel.

Make certain you have clothing on if you decide to get in the tub with your cat. Even the most normally laid-back (and our Tilly was generally a shy, timid kitty) cat can go full freakout when water is applied. If you can get someone to help you, that's even better.

Please don't be so quick to condemn people.  I've been in a situation where I had to move suddenly, and had to give up a cat to the shelter because it had behavioral issues (peeing on peoples' feet when it was angry), and I couldn't find anyone willing to take him.

It's been forever since I got to catch a caturday due to work. We had a scare with Maddie this week as she wouldn't get out of bed and was not happy. Once I got home she got neck rubs and I found one of her glands very swollen, massaged it and she perked up and was back to herself by the next morning.

Her last visit to the vet last week has her up to 9.75lbs from a low of 6.something before we got her meds workes out for hyperthyroidism. She is perfect now and as happy (and cute) as can be.

Good morning Caturday folks, it's another happy day here at work on Caturday.  New tracking system launched yesterday, and I have to train 25 people on it, most of whom don't listen to directions.  So yesterday was a great deal of

"This doesn't work" "Did you read the big message I sent saying how to get it working?" "Yeah I did" *trundle over* "Obviously not, because point number 2 tells you how to fix this." "No it doesn't" *death stare*

At least the training people today should be better, since less of them usually need high 5's, in the face, with a chair, made of steel...

Oh well, on with the kittehs, and the happiest wishes for the ongoing (or is it even started yet) Sherpa trek.  Also happy thoughts to all kittehs and kitteh slaves.

Hai guise! Haven't read the thread. Been chillin' on the couch recovering from surgery on Tuesday. Still not feeling too hot.

Any sherpa sightings? CDK heard from him a couple of days ago. He was working on lining things up to hopefully leave this weekend.

See, what had happened was... I was driving along a road and this little kitten was in the middle of the road. so OF COURSE I stopped. This little one isn't in the best of shape, but so far he's doing ok. Conjunctivitis to the point of possible blindness best case scenario and worse case, loss of his eyes. URI, not surprising... and all the other stuff associated with... well... strays... so, we have a new addition. Caturday family meet Clarence III or whatever name he might come in to.. : )

My kid is never going to talk to me again. On the way to the humane society a police officer who knows us pulled up next to us, saw me cross myself and laughed. He was behind us at a light in a "tourist" area when I pulled myself out of the passenger side window screaming "I want to live!"
He hit the lights and siren, going on the PA after that " mr. Xxx. Get back in the car. Everyone has to deal with their teenager learning to drive". There was much mirth in the area. Even better, a scout mother we knew was there and handed me a prescription bottle winking. She had put tic tacs in it and said in a loud voice "demerol". I tilted the bottle and ate them all. The policeman again got on the PA telling me to get in the car, everyone needs to teach their kid how to drive. So, right now he is doing his shift at the humane society livid at me. But I did get a lot of laughs.

Timid Goddess: *** Warning, long story about cats, a toddler and a bird ***

*snip*

You and your mini rescuer of small critters are AWESOME! I am proud of your wee one as well. My son is pushing 30 and he can still come up with a dozen ways to drag his feet about stuff he doesn't feel like doing (though putting on his shoes is no longer as high on the list as it was when he was a little guy). What is it with little kids and shoes, anyway?

Good job, Tiny Timid Goddess! (You too, mom!)

Timid Goddess: Have you tried cooking with Truvia Baking Blend?  It tastes just like you used regular sugar, but only 1/4th the calories of regular sugar.  To substitute, just use half as much in the recipe instead of the regular sugar.

I have not. I am one of those real cream, real butter, whole eggs kinda gals. When I was edumakated about Egg Beaters I was shocked at how tasty they were. Growing up in the '70s - the last time white sugar was so viciously maligned it wasn't even allowed in our house and I had to sneak candy from friends' houses - made me incredibly resistant to artificial anything. No one will never convince me that nutritional yeast tastes like cheese and that carob is exotic and expensive chocolate enjoyed by European royalty, either. That's what the makers of all these things are up against with me - spending a good decade being lied to by her own mother, because everything that is tasty is "bad" for you and will kill you DEAD faster than the Zodiac killer. I no longer believe any of the "better for you and tastes just as good", because like fat chicks everywhere, I remember when people mess with my enjoyment of my food. (Even if I wasn't fat when it happened)

I will admit I have pondered using Truvia, but I am a bit concerned about the impact on texture, especially in baked goods. Sugar isn't just used for flavoring, but also has a lot impact on the overall texture of the finished product. If it weren't so darn expensive, I might try a few things with it, but with my finances the way they are right now, I can't afford to experiment as much as I'd like to (and I'm too tired all the time anyway, so *shrug*).

BTW, Oreos were on sale, as were the Wheat Thins. I got a package of each, because I like Wheat Thins (which are actually quite fattening) and I'd never had the berry Oreos before. I deem the berry Oreos "tasty".

Now I gotta go clean up the mess from putting out the fire last night. I'm amazed at how well I managed to contain the flour mess. It could have been much, much worse - especially if I didn't get the fire out so quickly!

tigerose: Good Meowning! Happy gotcha day to lily. I powered thru the thread this morning after I got up.

laulaja scritches applied to Eli the bitey. He sends purrs back atcha.

Eli has done a nice job soaking up tears this week. On Tuesday I was informed that I had been laid off due to a reduction in positions. Now, why did they hire me last year and have a person " float" between schools? They put that person in my position..So now I did not get to say goodbye to staff. My kids are going to come back and be sad. And I have no idea what will happen to the Summer reading program. So, I have not felt too social...

Oh yippee! Caturday.
(Tl/dr/somewhat carthic) you have been warned. Plus Cessna goodness. The stories I could tell being for a good part of my younger life being a private pilot for hire......as well as a first class broadcast license that paid for my edumication (g) and private pilot hours..... There was a great summer in grad school we rented a plane through the school (a roommate got us Yugoslavian (I know I spelled this wrong) passports. We flew getting hours into lots of islands and had a wonderful time in Cuba. That caused Dad issues as he had been a White House advisor for several administrations and I was too stupid to think about the crap I caused. (Obviously I am an older fart, but with a teenager in high school now)

This week started out being severely depressing. A fark thread over a vaccine that killed our first born (vaccinate, we were the exception) had my wife and I spiraling under, especially as I was the next day installing DVD players I picked up from a humane society flea market into a charity hospice that needed them. Things got massively better for a couple of reasons. The kid (and I since he being under 18 required my presence and he is not really interested in his drivers license) by his volunteering at the humane society and him and I just getting "certified" to work with cat "socialization". Darn but I needed this. Sad thing is that kitten season is starting, and the kid and I both want to make sure that older cats get the love they need but there is a rotating cycle that makes sure every cat/kittens do rotation. He really earned my respect my telling my that the older cats in the shelter are more important than the kittens.

There is one eight year old very friendly (fur fungus) cat that I would love to adopt from the society because (may they rot and die) his family gave him up due to moving. My better two thirds is a dog person and two cats are enough for her. Cats are family pets. You have to be evil to abandon a cat. Scheese, the homeless shelters I cook for also have pet areas.

Sky King!

CSB time...
My grandfather (mom's dad) used to own the airport in Brownsburg, IN.
My uncle (mom's brother) had his pilots license and ended up being the Great Lakes factory rep for Cessna out of Rockford, IL.
As the factory rep, he had a stable of Cessna aircraft at his disposal for demonstration purposes.
One year, over spring vacation, we went up to visit him and he took us kids to the airport and took each of us up for rides.
(Between my grandfather and my uncle, I've flown since I was about 3 years old.)
This time, my uncle had one of those newfangled Polaroid cameras that produced (B&W) pictures in a minute.
Of course, you had to use this smelly squeegee thing to "finish the picture" and prevent it from over-developing.

He took a shot of me half standing on the wing/in the cabin of a Cessna 310, just like Sky King's!
It had the same paint job and everything!

I brought it back with me and took it to school for Show & Tell.
Geez-O-Pete!
All the other guys wished they were me, and all the girls wanted to touch me because I had been in a plane like Sky Kings!!!

Best spring vacation ever!

Haven't seen Hopalong in ages... try about 60 years ago ! I will check that out.... Thanks...

I've seen more Hopalong Cassidy, Maverick, Rifleman, Roy Rogers (my personal favorite, we have the same initials!),
Lone Ranger, and Magnum P.I., in the past 4 months than anything else.
Maverick's my personal favorite, but Thursday nights, they have four solid hours of Magnum P.I.

Still waiting for Cheyenne, Bronco, and Sugarfoot to show up.

Maverick and Rifleman were my favorites... but missed the most are  Saturday morning cartoons.....      :o)

And for those of you not reading late last week, we got a call to foster a couple of mommaless kittens.  Well, they are still in quarentine here, and on some meds for potential gastro-beasties, so it'll be at least the end of the weekend before they are okay to mingle with the lot in the rest of the house.
They are about 5 weeks but a little small for 5 weeks, and really messy eaters! (that's food all over both of their noses)
not sure it'll stick, but we've been calling them Calvin and Hobbes...

Caught a pair of feral kittens last week. Luckily, once I posted the photos of them to Facebook, they were quickly adopted and are now quite happy in their new domains.

Young Henry looks like his plotting to take over the world..  probably in cahoots with the new boy here.
He told my daughter his name is Griffin..  I think he was lying for giggles.

Yeah...she was feral. The lovely man that I got her from takes in strays and whatnot...gets them doctored up, fixed, etc. and finds home for them. 7 months after Josie passed, I told him that I was ready for another kitteh, and he picked her for me. He said "I have one for you to look at...she's really quiet, and has a sweet face." At lunch time, I went over to his place and he had her in a kennel on his back porch. I coaxed her over to me, and she purred, and rubbed my fingers. I was sold! Got off work early so I could go get her, and bring her home!!

Yesterday was Lily's 5 year anniversary of coming home with me! She hid from me for a month, and I had to install a barrier to the downstairs to keep her from going down there, too.

This was the first day that I brought her home.....
